Packers Daily Links: Lang Attends Eastern Michigan Spring Game

The Packers offensive lineman took in his alma mater's spring football game yesterday. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Offensive lineman T.J. Lang attended his alma mater's spring game on a sunny Sunday afternoon yesterday and took a couple moments to talk to a local reporter. "Right now it's still a blur," Lang told the Detroit News on winning the Super Bowl. "I'm glad I had a few chances to contribute." Lang also talked about the future of Eastern Michigan football in the interview.

The Green Bay Packers had a representative in attendance at the University of Minnesota-Duluth pro day last week where running back Issac Odim worked out. "Isaac ran a 4.6 forty, bench pressed 225 pounds 21 times , and leaped 10 and a half feet from a stand still in his workout," reports Fox 21 of Duluth and Superior. The UMD Bulldogs won the NCAA Division II national championship last season.

Linebacker Clay Matthews is participating in a chat today at ESPN.com. "Matthews will be showing support for his quarterback, Aaron Rodgers," writes Max Ginsberg of Purple Pants, Green Jersey. "Rodgers is a quarterfinalist to appear on the next cover of Madden NFL 12." Matthews will be appearing at noon Central time.

Defensive line is listed as the greatest need on the Packers, according to Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Cullen Jenkins, underrated for his inside rushing ability, figures to depart in unrestricted free agency, and Johnny Jolly will be sent packing due to persistent legal troubles," writes Vandermause. "That leaves the Packers short at a key position and facing some nagging questions. How much longer can 11-year veteran Ryan Pickett hold up? Can second-year prospect Mike Neal stay healthy? Will youngsters C.J. Wilson and Jarius Wynn continue to improve? As luck would have it, this draft is rich in talented defensive linemen." With six players returning on the two-deep roster, I don't agree that defensive line is the Packers' greatest need despite the probable losses of Jenkins and Jolly. Offensive line, outside linebacker and wide receiver all are greater perceived needs to me.

In a draft preview, Adam Czech of AllGreenBayPackers.com tries to project how Utah cornerback Brandon Burton would fit into the Packers defense. "Burton is solid on special teams and grabs receivers in pass coverage," writes Czech. "Both characteristics probably make him attractive to Ted Thompson and company. There will never be another Charles Woodson, but if you had to compare Burton to any current Packers, No. 21 would be a good match. Burton has good size, is aggressive (sometimes to a fault) in pass coverage, enjoys playing the run and goes all out on special teams if needed. He projects as a solid all-around corner."

In more draft coverage at AllGreenBayPackers.com, Thomas Hobbes lists Stephen Paea of Oregon State and Ian Williams of Notre Dame as fitting the Packers' prototypical defensive lineman. "The Packers are looking for defensive ends that are usually converted from defensive tackles that can hold up the point of attack, usually while double-teamed," writes Hobbes. "The main purpose of a defensive end is to clear up the lanes for the outside linebackers to make plays.  Being stout against the run is vitally important while being able to get to the quarterback is a nice bonus.  Defensive linemen as a whole must be very versatile and have a high football IQ, Dom Capers often dials up exotic blitz packages and usually that involves defensive linemen being in strange positions and situations."

Illinois governor Pat Quinn still hasn't paid up on his bet to Wisconsin governor Scott Walker when the Chicago Bears lost to the Packers in the NFC Championship game. "Quinn was scheduled to fulfill the bet on Feb. 21 at Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, a food bank in Milwaukee," writes Jim Stingl of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in a humorous column. "But he canceled because Democrats and Republicans in Wisconsin were at each other's throats at the time. Plus, Walker was trying to steal Illinois jobs."

The Green Bay Boys & Girls Club has received a $25,000 donation from Coca-Cola thanks to Packers fans voting during a promotion.

East Carolina offensive lineman Willie Smith is interviewed by Packer Report (subscription required).

Some dream draftees are listed by Michael Davidsen of Green Bay Packer Nation.

What about Justin Harrell? Could be the come back player of the year next year.

If the Illinois governor can stall another 8 or 9 months, he won't have to pay Walker at all ........ Walker (along with his out-of-state special interest groups) will be long gone via recall ...... Nothing worse than a politician whose answer to everything is 'slash & burn' ......

Let's try to keep politics out of this blog, mmmkay? That's just asking for a flame war.

Meanwhile, I'm still torn as to whether or not to vote for Rodgers for the Madden cover. Nice 'honor' to have, to be the cover guy for EA's flagship product/cash cow, but a curse is a curse, even if it is all in our heads.

I still can't wait for that exclusive license to run out, though - competition would be MUCH appreciated to get the franchise innovating again, instead of packaging a glorified roster update/minor gameplay tweak for 60 bucks.

I couldn't agree more on the exclusive license Bayou. the NFL2K series was a far superior product.

Can't argue there I think the exclusive license ends in 2012.
