Packers Daily Links: Defensive Backs Come for Pre-Draft Visit

Maine defensive backs Jerron McMillian and Trevor Coston visited the Packers on Wednesday. That and more in today's Daily Links...

A pair of defensive backs from the University of Maine visited the Packers on a pre-draft visit on Wednesday, according to Tom Silverstein at JSOnline. "Strong safety Jeron McMillian and free safety Trevor Coston were flown in today to meet with Packers coaches and scouts," writes Silverstein. McMillian was invited to the NFL Combine, so most NFL teams know quite about him already, but Coston is more of an under-the-radar type. Silverstein also wrote about how the high number of defensive backs brought into Green Bay for a visit, for what it's worth. A visit to Green Bay does not necessarily mean the Packers will draft or sign a player, but it is someone they're showing interest in. Historically, most players visiting Green Bay don't sign with the Packers but there's usually a handful that do.

The Packers also worked out an area product, defensive lineman Drew Vanderlin of Michigan Tech and a Green Bay Southwest High School alum. "It went really well," Vanderlin is quoted as saying by the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "I got the call the Friday before from my agent telling me we were going to do it. I was real excited, obviously growing up watching the Packers and going to Packers games. Vanderlin reportedly had 117 tackles, 36 for a loss and 20 sacks during his college career at the NCAA Division II University.

In a column at for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, writer Tyler Dunne indicated a little interest from the Packers in Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish. "Harnish met the Packers at the combine but not in Green Bay," writes Dunne. "He did fly to Seattle for a date with Pete Carroll and the Seahawks." Looks like former Packers front office guy John Schneider could be interested in Harnish too.

Packers president Mark Murphy commented on the newly released NFL schedule to Fox 11 news in Green Bay. "I think it reflects well on the Packers obviously to get 5 prime time games which is the maximum the NFL allows in terms of prime time games” said Murphy. I didn't know there was a maximum in place.

Mark Murphy also helped introduce the new food and beverage provider at Lambeau Field on Wednesday, Delaware North Companies Sportservice. "Sportservice has a long list of clients, including MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Yosemite Park and the Kennedy Space Center," writes Richard Ryman of the Press-Gazette. Sportservice will operate Curly's Pub at Lambeau Field as well as some other atrium eateries.

Wide receiver Donald Driver is not attending offseason workouts at Lambeau Field, obviously because of his participation in Dancing With The Stars, reports Tom Silverstein at JSOnline.

Safety Nick Collins is getting opinions from five different spinal surgeons in order to make a decision on his football-playing future, according to Tom Silverstein.

Features on the NFL Draft quarterback position from Bob McGinn of the Journal Sentinel include an article on Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin, a ranking of the quarterbacks and a notes section.

Defensive position breakdowns of NFL Draft prospects from Tyler Dunne include defensive tackles, defensive ends, inside linebackers, outside linebackers, cornerbacks and safeties.

NFL Draft previews are also published on the tight ends at ESPNMilwaukee.com, the defensive line at the Press-Gazette and the wide receivers at Fox Sports Wisconsin.

A pre-draft position analysis of the Packers defensive backs appears at PackersNews.com.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was eliminated from the Madden 13 cover voting. More from JSOnline, Fox Sports Wisconsin and ESPNMilwaukee.com.

The elimination of the throwback jersey in 2012 is touched upon at the Press-Gazette and ESPNMilwaukee.com.

Packer Report has articles on NFL draft safeties, quarterbacks and Packers players entering year No. 2.

A list of the best and worst draft picks by Ted Thompson comes from the Journal Sentinel.

So if there's maximum number of primetime games, I guess we won't be flexed to NBC for any late-season games.

Good point. I wonder if there's an exception for flex games. I have no clue.

Why no more links to posts from blog sites? That used to be the best part of your daily links. We can find all these media articles on our own. Has CheeseheadTV gone corporate? Call me disappointed...

It's been my policy for several months now to provide links to reporting of news regardless of source and professional commentary. If a blog reports on news, I'll include it. Very few do. Too many are second-hand news sources, and I personally think it's not worth my time or yours to include those.

I suggest going to AllGreenBayPackers.com for a good Packers blog. Good commentary there.

Brian, you and the new squad have been amazing this offseason. Very few boring days on my favorite website. Great work, and if I were rich I'd buy the site and pay you a whole bunch.
