Packers Daily Links: Clay Matthews Discusses Leadership Role

The Packers linebacker talks about becoming a bigger leader this season in Green Bay. That and more in today's Daily Links...

Now that Charles Woodson is no longer a member of the Packers defense, linebacker Clay Matthews discussed taking on a leadership role in an article published at JSOnline. "I think it's just the natural progression with leadership on this team," Matthews is quoted as saying by reporter Rob Reischel. "Obviously the more comfortable I am in the scheme, which I very much am, the longer I'm here, the more tenured I am, the more I have to take that leadership opportunity." Matthews was voted as a postseason captain for the first time in his career last year. He still has plenty to prove as a leader, but he would appear to be equipped to do so.

Other articles appearing in this week's Packer Plus section at JSOnline, include pieces on defensive tackle B.J. Raji, the cornerbacks, former Packers assistant coaches and a column on new Hall of Famer Dave Robinson.

Rookie defensive lineman Datone Jones is named the 16th most important Packer of 2013 at ESPNMilwaukee.com. "Jones certainly looks the part of a 3-4 defensive end; in fact, he’s probably the first prototypical 3-4 end the Packers have had since hiring Dom Capers and converting to his scheme in 2009," writes Jason Wilde. "Meanwhile, Jones was able to hit the ground running in the defense because the Bruins under coach Jim Mora and defensive coordinator Lou Spanos ran a strikingly similar scheme. Spanos spent 15 years as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including during Capers’ tenure there in the mid-1990s." It will be interesting to see if Jones can be a three-down player in his first year in the NFL.

Inside linebackers Brad Jones and A.J. Hawk were jointly named the 17th most important Packers of 2013 in the same series at ESPNMilwaukee.com.

The United States Bowling Congress announced that Green Bay would host the inaugural USBC Championship Series in 2015. As noted at the Green Bay Press-Gazette, a tour of Lambeau Field by USBC officials help to cement the deal. "The Packers connection often helps with landing an event," writes reporter Scott Venci. "Any worry that the community can’t handle a big-time sporting attraction often is eliminated because of the franchise."

Hopefully Clay will be available for all 16 regular season games. Somehow he needs to get past the hammy problems if he's going to be the leader on defense. It's time Clay, Hawk and Raji all stepped up and became leaders.

Too much beer for this article. I thought this article was about Clay taking charge and I ended up watching a video with a bunch of sweaty fat chicks. Ah crap.
