Packers Calendar: Waiver Claims and Practice Squad

The deadline for waiver claims and to start establishing a practice squad takes place at 11:00 a.m. CT on Sunday.

One day after setting their 53-man roster for the 2014 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers get back to work, preparing for their big season opener against the Seahawks in Seattle on Thursday.

But first, the Packers have to take care of some housekeeping duties.

After all NFL teams trimmed their rosters on Saturday, the deadline to make waiver claims comes at 11:00 a.m. CT.

There's no guarantee the Packers will add a player released from another team, but if they do, they would have to release a corresponding player in order to make room.

Also at 11:00 a.m., the Packers can begin establishing their practice squad after waiting to see if any players get claimed.

There's no shortage of candidates the Packers released on Saturday that they'll end up signing on Sunday.

Head coach Mike McCarthy will hold a press conference at 4:00 p.m. CT, to be streamed live at Packers.com.

McCarthy will undoubtedly be asked about the makeup of his 2014 roster and will look ahead to the NFL Kickoff game in Seattle.

I hope Hubbard is on the practice squad. What A shame it would be to miss out on him learning from peppers, and taking over from him when he retires.

We need a NT, and Ted apparently doesn't want Pickett.

OL depth would be nice too.

Last year, after the McMillan and M.D. Jennings fiasco, you tore my head off when I suggested we might want to concentrate our scouting more on large school players. I guess your the type that want to have his cake and eat it too...whichever way the wind blows.

Nice getting Rolle signed to PS! That's big win I think. Looks like he had 10 offers and chose to stay with Pack. Banjo & White also back to PS gives some experience in case we need somebody in a hurry.

I think you are right about teams preferring to keep their own players, the ones who have been in camp and know their schemes. Rolle staying is one thing, but I don't think it says that much about the franchise. For example, if I were one of those three WRs (White, Dorsey, Gillett), if I had an offer elsewhere I sure would have bailed on GB and signed with some other team. At the least, Nelson, Cobb, Adams, and Boykin aren't going anywhere for the next couple of years. Maybe they each think they are the one that GB will promote from the PS in case of an injury. It might depend on which wide receiver gets hurt (i.e. White might be correct that he is the next man up if GB needs a slot receiver), but two of them have to be wrong. I wonder if any of the three got an other offers and/or if they are being paid more than the normal PS salary to stay?

So, WR White, WR Dorsey, WR Gillet, S Banjo, TE Perillo, OT Vujnovich, RB Hill, OLB Hubbard, DE Robinson C Gerhart all make it to PS (all 10 spots taken).

No CB Rolle, no TE Stoneburner (on IR, though I don't know what for).

That must have been a premature report. I saw where Rolle had about 10 other offers so I am assuming he has either signed elsewhere or is weighing his options.

If that's true, it's quite interesting how players will make an extra effort to stay with the Packers. Rolle would probably have noticed how the Pack have developed undrafted FA CB's Shields and Williams.

Good thoughts. I haven't seen where Rolle has signed anywhere else so he and the team may have worked out an agreement to get him on the roster . That would be good thinking by Ted & Co. if that is the plan. No doubt he would jump if given an opportunity on another team's "53". Like you say the pay is about 3x more and he would be foolish to pass it up.

Okay, Rolle actually is going to the 53 man roster, and Goodson ends up on the PS (if all goes well). So, of course Rolle stayed. Even if that turns out not to be the case and Rolle ends up on the PS, I still think he might have stayed with GB. As you pointed out above, GB has a lot of quality depth at CB THIS year, next year it is more tenuous with Williams, House, and Bush in contract years. That is great news, as I have high hopes for Rolle and think Goodson has a lot of talent, but needs coaching. BTW, also think 3 WRs (with one on IR) is a lot. I was a little disappointed in Dorsey; he did not seem to have done much with his year in GB. Too many drops, yes, and a couple of times seemed to me to run the wrong route and not to come back to the ball, letting defenders step in front of him.

As it stands right now, this is what I've heard is the Packers PS:

WR Kevin Dorsey
WR Alex Gillett
WR Myles White
RB Michael Hill
TE Justin Perillo
OT Jeremy Vujnovich
C Garth Gerhart
DE Luther Robinson
OLB Adrian Hubbard
S Chris Banjo

Just about everyone I hoped they'd get on they did. I quess Rolle is going to be added later and then one of the above kicked off. Also wouldn't be surprised if they brought in an o-lineman and move Goodson or Bradford to the PS.

They're a little heavy at WR on the PS, but else covered most of the positions of need. The Pack managed to keep almost all of the best of the original 90 man roster. Good job.

Defensive players take awhile to develop. See Daniels, Collins, Bishop, Shields, etc...

Bradford will eventually become a good player, just going to take some time. I personally look forward to the day when he's chasing QB's from the inside. With all the outside pass rushers on the team, there will be pressure from multiple directions.
