Packers Calendar: Waiver Claims and Practice Squad

Packers Calendar: Waiver Claims and Practice Squad

One day after setting their 53-man roster for the 2014 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers get back to work, preparing for their big season opener against the Seahawks in Seattle on Thursday.

But first, the Packers have to take care of some housekeeping duties.

After all NFL teams trimmed their rosters on Saturday, the deadline to make waiver claims comes at 11:00 a.m. CT.

There's no guarantee the Packers will add a player released from another team, but if they do, they would have to release a corresponding player in order to make room.

Also at 11:00 a.m., the Packers can begin establishing their practice squad after waiting to see if any players get claimed.

There's no shortage of candidates the Packers released on Saturday that they'll end up signing on Sunday.

Head coach Mike McCarthy will hold a press conference at 4:00 p.m. CT, to be streamed live at Packers.com.

McCarthy will undoubtedly be asked about the makeup of his 2014 roster and will look ahead to the NFL Kickoff game in Seattle.

I hope Hubbard is on the practice squad. What A shame it would be to miss out on him learning from peppers, and taking over from him when he retires.

Nerd's picture

We need a NT, and Ted apparently doesn't want Pickett.

OL depth would be nice too.

GoldFinger's picture

We don't need a nose tackle Nerd. We have one of the best in Mike Pennel you'll see. 6 foot 4 and full of muscle.

Stroh's picture

Too bad he doesn't play to his talent. Has plenty but couldn't even dominate D2 college or whatever division it is. How's he gonna dominate in the NFL if he couldn't D2 college.

GoldFinger's picture

Go lecture someone who gives a shit about what you have to say. I don't!!

Stroh's picture

You just don't want to face that I'm right. Living in LaLa land again. Just a troll (who's been banned numberous times) under a bridge w/ a keyboard.

GoldFinger's picture

Yep, you are right Stroh. You are the greatest. I'm living in La La Land. I'm just a troll who was banned numerous times blah blah blah. Now that everyone knows this and of your greatness, please quit responding to me and causing trouble. Didn't you just make some fake apology yesterday claiming "you should know better" than to respond to me? So if you were sincere about it, why are you still acting like an asshole and responding to me? Just leave me be. That's all I ask. Leave me be!! There's no arguing if you can just shut your big mouth. You can't do it. For the sake of everyone here, just LEAVE ME BE!! No matter how much you want to respond to my posts DON'T!! How hard can that be?

Stroh's picture

Brought it on yourself from your previous comments under all other aliases.

I offered you that deal when you were on your first alias and you didn't comply, but you want me to now? Can't take your own medicine I guess!

Leave... You've been banned numberous times already. Clearly your not wanted.

For the record, I said I shouldn't have called you delusional (even tho its true).

To the community, I will try to refrain from anything other than football if I reply to him.

Icebowler's picture

Last year, after the McMillan and M.D. Jennings fiasco, you tore my head off when I suggested we might want to concentrate our scouting more on large school players. I guess your the type that want to have his cake and eat it too...whichever way the wind blows.

Nice getting Rolle signed to PS! That's big win I think. Looks like he had 10 offers and chose to stay with Pack. Banjo & White also back to PS gives some experience in case we need somebody in a hurry.

GoldFinger's picture

That's great news JimTaylor. Makes my day. Nothing could top it unless Nagler banned Stroh for harassment, stalking and being a public annoyance.

Stroh's picture

More like ban AGAIN, the guy that's already been banned numberous times.

Stroh's picture

Good to hear. Guess Ted know best. Everyone was convinced Rolle would be signed by another team. I like Rolle and his potential, but didn't think another team was too likely to sign him.

Teams hold onto their own and only a few guys released get on another teams roster. And only a few more go to another teams PS. Teams stick w/ the guys they've scouted, signed and tried to develop. They don't usually sign players from other teams.

The fact he came back to GB instead of leaving for another when there are so many good CB ahead of him, says a lot about the franchise. He surely had other teams w a more tenuous CB situation interested. Packers really work to develop their PS players more than most teams.

Thegreatreynoldo's picture

I think you are right about teams preferring to keep their own players, the ones who have been in camp and know their schemes. Rolle staying is one thing, but I don't think it says that much about the franchise. For example, if I were one of those three WRs (White, Dorsey, Gillett), if I had an offer elsewhere I sure would have bailed on GB and signed with some other team. At the least, Nelson, Cobb, Adams, and Boykin aren't going anywhere for the next couple of years. Maybe they each think they are the one that GB will promote from the PS in case of an injury. It might depend on which wide receiver gets hurt (i.e. White might be correct that he is the next man up if GB needs a slot receiver), but two of them have to be wrong. I wonder if any of the three got an other offers and/or if they are being paid more than the normal PS salary to stay?

Turophile's picture

So, WR White, WR Dorsey, WR Gillet, S Banjo, TE Perillo, OT Vujnovich, RB Hill, OLB Hubbard, DE Robinson C Gerhart all make it to PS (all 10 spots taken).

No CB Rolle, no TE Stoneburner (on IR, though I don't know what for).

Stroh's picture

Wait which is it? JT31 just above commented that Rolle was signed. Anyone got officially signed PS players?

Per Packers.com it looks like your correct. No Rolle on the PS. 3 WR seems a bit overkill, even tho they are all decent prospects, I would decide on 2 of them and sign Rolle if available.

JimTaylor31's picture

That must have been a premature report. I saw where Rolle had about 10 other offers so I am assuming he has either signed elsewhere or is weighing his options.

Stroh's picture

My guess is Goodson's concussion prevented him being released. Once he's healthy I wouldn't be surprised if Goodson is released from the 53, Rolle signed and Goodson to the PS. They can't release Goodson w/ an injury w/o a settlement which also means they couldn't sign him for another 6 wks.

Keeping Goodson on the 53 for a week or so, keeps both in GB. Rolle might have other PS options, but if he hasn't signed on a PS, I think the Packers told him they'll put him on the 53 as soon as Goodson is healthy and can be released.

sonomaca's picture

If that's true, it's quite interesting how players will make an extra effort to stay with the Packers. Rolle would probably have noticed how the Pack have developed undrafted FA CB's Shields and Williams.

Stroh's picture

Definitely... And that give him hope that as an udfa, they'll give him every chance to reach his potential and keep him around.

It also means Rolle gets paid more. If he's on the 53, he gets paid ALOT more than being on a PS. On the PS, he would get around 100K, on an active roster over 300K.

JimTaylor31's picture

Good thoughts. I haven't seen where Rolle has signed anywhere else so he and the team may have worked out an agreement to get him on the roster . That would be good thinking by Ted & Co. if that is the plan. No doubt he would jump if given an opportunity on another team's "53". Like you say the pay is about 3x more and he would be foolish to pass it up.

Thegreatreynoldo's picture

Okay, Rolle actually is going to the 53 man roster, and Goodson ends up on the PS (if all goes well). So, of course Rolle stayed. Even if that turns out not to be the case and Rolle ends up on the PS, I still think he might have stayed with GB. As you pointed out above, GB has a lot of quality depth at CB THIS year, next year it is more tenuous with Williams, House, and Bush in contract years. That is great news, as I have high hopes for Rolle and think Goodson has a lot of talent, but needs coaching. BTW, also think 3 WRs (with one on IR) is a lot. I was a little disappointed in Dorsey; he did not seem to have done much with his year in GB. Too many drops, yes, and a couple of times seemed to me to run the wrong route and not to come back to the ball, letting defenders step in front of him.

Stroh's picture

The CB depth is more tenuous next year. IMO Tramon won't be back... They'll let him sign w/ another team and take a 3rd or 4th round comp pick instead. I don't see Bush coming back either. I'm almost 100% certain they'll re-sign House tho. His play this year will be the deciding factor of course, but he had an outstanding training camp and preseason and is pushing Hayward for the #3 CB job.

Goodson on the PS and Rolle on the 53 makes the most sense to me, but they added Rolle to the PS, at the expense of one of the WR.

GBjohnny's picture

Is there any way that I can NOT have to see Goldfinger and Strohs little bitchfight on EVERY post? Effing sickening .

GoldFinger's picture

Yes, report Stroh to Aaron Nagler for constantly responding to my posts. If you and more do so the asshole might and I say might go away. He thinks he's above the law here. We need to come together and rid this piece of nonstop garbage and throw him out.

GBjohnny's picture

You are just as bad as Stroh.

Stroh's picture

Have Gold banned... AGAIN. He's been banned at least 2x's that I know of, probably more.

I apologized to the community already for the hostilities. He needs to be banned permanently.

GBjohnny's picture

You are just as bad as Goldfinger.

Mojo's picture

As it stands right now, this is what I've heard is the Packers PS:

WR Kevin Dorsey
WR Alex Gillett
WR Myles White
RB Michael Hill
TE Justin Perillo
OT Jeremy Vujnovich
C Garth Gerhart
DE Luther Robinson
OLB Adrian Hubbard
S Chris Banjo

Just about everyone I hoped they'd get on they did. I quess Rolle is going to be added later and then one of the above kicked off. Also wouldn't be surprised if they brought in an o-lineman and move Goodson or Bradford to the PS.

They're a little heavy at WR on the PS, but else covered most of the positions of need. The Pack managed to keep almost all of the best of the original 90 man roster. Good job.

Stroh's picture

I would expect Gerhart to be released once Tretter is healthy. No need for 3 Centers on the team and PS. I would release White of the 3 WR, but he's the only slot WR behind Cobb, w/ Abbrederis on the IR, that's probably his saving grace.

Goodson would be the first player I would release from the roster. I like his athletic ability, but he's really inexperience at CB and he's already 25 yrs old. Bradford being a 4th rd pick saved him. Thompson just didn't want to give up on a mid round pick.

sonomaca's picture

Defensive players take awhile to develop. See Daniels, Collins, Bishop, Shields, etc...

Bradford will eventually become a good player, just going to take some time. I personally look forward to the day when he's chasing QB's from the inside. With all the outside pass rushers on the team, there will be pressure from multiple directions.

zsooners's picture

The word is spelled numerous, not numberous. True, dumb is spelled with a b.

GoldFinger's picture

LMFAO... Oh, but he's never wrong. I guess it's easy for him to make that mistake when his first name is numbnuts.

Stroh says:

"To the community, I will try to refrain from anything other than football if I reply to him."

I misspelled a word big deal. You've literally been begging for mercy and help. This is your golden egg. Don't break it... I can do this all you want. And I'm REALLY good at it. I'm going to try hard not to break my word to the community, if I do its on you. You SERIOUSLY do not want to continue down this road. Do so at your own peril!!!

http://cheeseheadtv.com/blog/packers-calendar-waiver-claims-and-practice...

GoldFinger's picture

Misspelling is a rather big deal to some here Mr. Numberous!! I don't really care about spelling but some do. Expect to get called out for it and deal with it when you screw up as bad as you did. I spelled Tolzien wrong and I got over it. Be a man and take it.

Stroh's picture

ESPN Packers... "The Green Bay Packers did not keep Matt Flynn around to be a third-string quarterback. The 29-year-old journeyman will start the season at Aaron Rodgers' primary backup, coach Mike McCarthy announced on Sunday."

I guess that puts to rest that discussion! LMFAO

I'm giving you your chance. Are you going to squander it? You've been BEGGING for mercy and help. This is your chance!

GoldFinger's picture

Of course he's going to be the no. 2 now. He's Aaron Rodgers' best friend on the team. Why would they keep him and put him at no. 3. Rodgers would get pissed. This news only verifies that my initial theory was right after all not sonomaca's intel. It was about the Rodgers and Flynn Friendship. Thank you Stroh!! LMFAO!! Yes, you and I should be at rest now. No more bickering. I was right. I'll take it. Not that it matters but what the hell.

Stroh's picture

And this puts to end the discussion of who the #2 RB is. Where you claimed Harris was better in preseason.

"As for balance, Green Bay’s ground game is more formidable than it’s ever been in the Mike McCarthy era, with Eddie Lacy and James Starks as the 1-2 punch."

Flynn can win games, its just that simple. Tolzien hasn't... 0-3 to date. You said for weeks now Tolzien was the #2 QB. One day of changing to say Flynn is on the roster due to a friendship w/ Rodgers, now you say he the #2 QB due a friendship w/ Rodgers?. Keep changing your mind... Just mind boggling!

Again and again, everything I've been saying...

GoldFinger's picture

Ok your majesty, I will allow you to have Starks even though there never was a debate on it. All I said was Harris deserves to be ranked up to the same level as Starks due to his strong finish in the preseason. I know this won't sit well with Mr. Numberous so I will just pretend for the sake of shutting down your mouth that I did say Harris would win the no. 2 position (even though I didn't) and allow you to feel good about yourself. I know how important being right is to you. Congrats on the fine call on Starks as no. 2. Nobody but you saw that coming so props.

As for Tolzien, 99% of the world knows he's the no. 2 qb on this team based on his production. The fact is Aaron Rodgers is best friends with Flynn. I did not take that into account but clearly it was the no. 1 factor which I was dead on right about yesterday now that we know what MM said today. But again, I'll just for the sake of not having to hear from you anymore declare you victor. I know how important being right is to you. I would hate to see you lose precious sleep over this.

I hope this settles everything and you can quit responding back to me. I want nothing more to do with you. Please stay away from me. Thank you for your cooperation. Again congratulations for winning it all!!

Stroh's picture

He didn't produce more points in the preseason or wins last year. Those numbers mean ALOT more than passing stats.

Which was and is the entire reason why Flynn is #2 and the basis for my entire argument in regards to Flynn over Tolzien. If you think McCarthy would put a lesser player on the field if Rodgers goes down then that is delusional thinking.
