Packers Calendar: Three-Day Negotiating Window Opens

Packers players entering free agency can begin negotiating with other teams on Saturday. And likewise, the Packers can negotiate with players from other teams.

At the time of publication, the Green Bay Packers only have a few hours left for exclusive negotiating rights with their pending free agent class.

Beginning at 3:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, a three-day window opens in which free agents can enter into negotiations with other teams.

That means a player like wide receiver Randall Cobb and his agent can start talking to other teams like the Oakland Raiders or Jacksonville Jaguars, each of which are flush with salary-cap space.

Of course, the Packers can also begin negotiating with players on other teams too, although recent history says their priority would be taking care of their own free agents first, at least the top ones.

If it seems like it's time to panic now that Cobb can talk with other teams, remember that last year cornerback Sam Shields re-signed with the Packers during the three-day window.

While players can negotiate all they want, contracts with new teams cannot be executed until the start of the new league year on Mar. 10 at 3:00 p.m. That means the Packers still have exclusive signing rights to their own free agents up until that date.

Also on Saturday, "Project Play 60" is taking place at Lambeau Field, a community event that is free and open to the public.

Taking place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in both the Lambeau Field atrium and the fourth floor Legends Club, children are encouraged to get out of the house and take part in non-strenuous physical activity.

Among the activities available will be a climbing wall, bungee trampolines, family yoga, inflatables, physical activity stations and performances by the West Bend Dance/Tumbling Troupe.

Out in California, Packers running back Eddie Lacy will take part in a public autograph session at the Santa Clara Convention Center on Saturday.

Lacy will appear starting at 12:30 p.m. local time. Admission and autograph tickets are required. More information can be found at GTSportsMarketing.com.

Every player is aware of the risks/rewards of playing football. TT says we make football decisions. These days football decisions means managing the cap. The NFL is all about profit and the players see this. They will almost in every case , take the money. Cobb would be nuts to turn down a million or two more per year. He could blow out a knee in training camp.

No argument.
It's kind of easy for an average Joe like me to say "Why take 11 mill to play for (fill in the blank with crappy team) when you could stay with GB for 9?"
The problem there is that I'm saying 2 million dollars is "nothing".
But last I checked, two million dollars is still a crapload o' money!

"But last I checked, two million dollars is still a crapload o' money!"

Depends on where you get that extra $2 mil.

California has ridiculous levels of taxation on income. Florida has none. Cost of living in New York is much higher than Green Bay.

The smart player is aware of those factors when deciding whether 11 mil is more than 9 mil. Because it may not really be so despite the fact that 11 is obviously more than 9.

Yeah, I certainly agree with your basic point that it's hard to fault a guy for taking more money from someplace else. I sure won't with Cobb if that's the way it ultimately works out.

I'm anxious to see what Thompson's plan is. No one is signed, Williams seems as good as gone and they haven't even spoke to House's agent yet, at least from what I've read. You know Ted has a plan, hopefully if they lose Cobb, House, and Williams, Ted doesn't wait until April or after to address it, or his solution is Abby, Janis, and BIG jumps from Adams and Rodgers II.

Not surprised by TT ignoring Tramon, Randall and AJ, but AM surprised that House and Bulaga aren't signed yet.

Everybody is out for his own best deal. Cobb, House, and Bulaga are probably demanding more money than TT can afford (or wants to pay out). I stick by TT because his player dealings have been proven right thru the years. I trust TT to have other plans in place for the Packers if Cobb, Bulaga, and House remain unsigned.

I trust TT too. He's earned it. SB trophies are not easy to get. Ask Denver how going "all in" with FA's went.
(Or, going back further, how about Dan "FA King" Snyder?)

Gotta be smart.
Gotta be disciplined.
Gotta mind the cap.

Spending big and "going all in" just doesn't lead to great results as far as winning a SB goes. Neither NE or Seattle went for broke. They just stuck to their philosophy and stayed patient. Seems like we always get impatient this time of year but in the end Ted fields a playoff caliber team. I'm not that concerned right now. Maybe in August I'll have more cause for concern but not in March.

Just saw it too!!! I was pretty concerned all week but in the end Cobb WANTED to stay in GB. He left more money on the table from 6 or 7 different teams according to one report. Awesome News!!!
