Packers Calendar: Offseason Program Begins without Flynn, Lattimore Under Contract

Packers players return to 1265 Lombardi Ave. on Tuesday for the first time since last season ended. Strength and conditioning activities will take place.

There was a point where the NFL was planning the release of its 2014 schedule on Tuesday, but it doesn't appear as if that will happen until Wednesday until the earliest.

Regardless, the Green Bay Packers begin their offseason training program on Tuesday, as Phase 1 gets underway.

Per terms of the league's latest collective bargaining agreement, Phase 1 consists of the first two weeks of the offseason training program, which consists exclusively of strength and conditioning. Players cannot work with coaches and can only work out a maximum of four days per week and not on the weekends.

Essentially, Packers players will be lifting weights, doing aerobic exercises and rehabbing from injury for the next two weeks as the team comes back together under one roof for the first time since last season ended and gets back into the groove of things.

Two players that will not be taking part in the proceedings until they sign a contract are quarterback Matt Flynn and linebacker Jamari Lattimore. Neither player appeared on Monday's NFL transaction wire.

Flynn was reported to have agreed to terms on a contract with the Packers last week, while Lattimore was reported to have received a tender offer from the orgranization at the outset of free agency but has yet to sign it.

It could certainly be a case of convenience, where both players will sign on the dotted line on Tuesday when they arrive in Green Bay and then take part in the offseason program.

Lattimore, however, has the right to test free agency until Friday May 2—the deadline for restricted free agents to sign contracts—although the Packers have the right to match any offer the linebacker may receive.

If and when Lattimore signs his tender offer with the Packers, it will be for one year at $1.431 million. He will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2014 season.

It seems to me that neither Latti, more nor Flynn have such a secure roster position that they can afford to let prep time slip away.

You're right, Lattimore is not signed and thus cannot work out. Same with Flynn, until today. I presume he (Flynn) waited until the start of workouts to fly in, sign and start working.

Lattimore can sign his tender any time. If he's tying up a personal loose end for a few days, no big deal. But I think it would be unwise for him to not sign his tender and report by the time individual instructions start. These workouts are "voluntary" in title only, especially for backup players.
