Packers Bring Back James Jones

Via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Packers have re-signed their former reciever.

From Ian

No word yet on a corresponding move. Spoon reports it's a one year deal

Last year with the Raiders, Jones was thrown to 111 times, catching 73 balls for 666 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Let the battle for 89 between Richard Rodgers and Jones commence.

I'm normally opposed to signing stop gap older guys. Young guys figure to get better, old guys figure to get worse.

But a veteran in the WR room is a good move, IMO. Miles White is the 2nd most veteran guy. Or at least he was. If Jones has anything at all left in the tank, Rodgers will bring it out of him.

Sounds like you're on the fence.

I like the pickup because I know this is what Rodgers wanted. Also, this adds a much needed veteran presence ON the field with the WRs and not limited to just the study room/sidelines (from an injured Nelson). I don't care about Myles White being around for 2 seasons. He has been in zero cluth situations and has proved nothing in a regular season game.

I'm not at all on the fence for the reasons you give. It's a unique situation.

But it is out of character for me to want a guy that is way closer to the end than the beginning. I do like the younger group of WRs they have. But Jones will help those guys along during the week, even if he's not helping at much as I think he can on gameday.

Agree Dre, what has Myles White ever done? If JJ has anything left (a lot do at WR, even at 31), then PS White. If JJ fails, bring White back up. Sorry, but there are fringe guys all over the NFL.

Tough for whomever drops from the 53, but we're trying to win a Super Bowl here.

Exactly. The Packers WR's not named Cobb or Adams have a total of 9 receptions in the regular season so Jones makes perfect sense. I love Montgomery and Janis and the potential they have but I'd say Thompson was looking for a Veteran no matter what and Jones happened to get cut. Perfect! Plus Jones was always good in the Red Zone.

I'M ALL FOR IT!! YES!!!

Jones isn't that old, he had 73 receptions last year. Don't forget he lead the league in touchdown receptions back in 2012. He won't replicate Nelson's 1,500 yards, but even 500 yards is still good enough warrant a return. I'm stoked!

Also to be noted. He had 73 catches with a rookie QB, and no other real weapons on offense.

People usually point out his poultry 9.1 yards per catch, but I think that had a lot to do with Oakland's offense. People will believe that resigning Jones was the right decision in the end. He's not going to replace all of Jordy's numbers, but the fact remains that the Packers now have 3 reliable receivers, which imo makes a VERY big difference, especially when we play against the bigger teams in the NFL. Like the game against New England for example, when Adams had a spectacular day. It's absolutely awesome to have 3 good receivers again!

Well said Chad. Three established reliable WR's make all the difference in the world. Montgomery can still be a factor in this offense without a doubt. If the talent is there Rodgers will get it out of him.

If Jones averages 9.1 yards per reception, I will be ok with that. What he really will provide is a Redzone and 3rd down target that Rodgers can trust. That is huge for Rodgers especially after losing Nelson.

Jones showed home run ability when he was in GB. While I expect he has lost a step since then, I think his YPC will be better in GB.

Rodgers is like a rising tide for pass catchers' boats...he'll lift them all up.

I thought they would just 'kick the tyres' with him as a prelude to possibly picking him up later in the season if more injuries happen at WR.

It seems they were more serious than that, possibly due to the lack of experience at WR, now Jordy is out.

While I'm not usually a fan of these kind of moves, Jones is a good fit. A 1 year filler a la the Patriots for a guy who fits the system. He will be able to run the curls, outs, hitches, etc that help move the chains. He's the #3 guy and will allow Janis and Monty to develop further. He'll probably have numbers similar to what Adams did last year - 40 for 500 & 5 TDs. For the vet minimum cost that's ok. If he gets hurt during the year we have some depth behind him. And if he doesn't have anything left in the tank, no harm no foul. Plus, I think the team sees this as the peak of A-Rod's window - and are willing to play a LITTLE bit more for the present.

Jones' best season yardage wise was barely over 800 yds. He's a couple years older and less of a playmaker now. He should be a reliable WR, but I wouldn't expect too many big gains or explosive plays.

I would happily take 600 yds from Jones this year.

Jones is not facing nearly as stiff competition for catches this time around in GB. No Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Finley. Cobb is very good but he's gonna get much more attention this year without Nelson drawing coverage away. Everyone else is still learning.

Great QBs find a way to be great no matter who they are throwing to. Rodgers had 4400 last year. Nelson & Cobb accounted for about 2800. I seriously Adams and Cobb can do that this year. I think 2100 seems more realistic. That's a minimal drop by Cobb and Adams doubling his yards. So that 700 yard deficit needs to be made up elsewhere. R. Rodgers seems likely to eat in to some of that gap. Jones is by far the next best bet, IMO.

Jones best year by yardage was '13. Jennings was in Minn, Finley and Cobb missed the vast majority of the season. Finley's neck injury in wk 5 or 6, Cobb injured in the Balt game wk 4 or 5. Jones was the #2 option in the passing game that year.

I agree about Cobb's and Adams numbers. Cobb equal or slight drop, Adams 700-800 yds. But Jones will be the #3, instead of #2 he was in '13 and he's 2 yrs older and not as good. Jones might be the #3 but he just isn't the same player. 600 yds seems very fair to me. I'd be shocked (and very happy) if he put up better numbers or similar to '13.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the apparent change of heart amongst Packer fans regarding James Jones.

The guy was criminally underrated before his departure and finally getting his comeuppance.

I still hope White/Janis see solid reps. I think they each have unique skill-sets that can help bring new wrinkles to the O.

Wags, comeuppance is technically neutral but is as you say almost always - really almost universally - used in the vernacular as a negative. Karma is the neutral term.

I also disagree that packer fans have underrated James Jones. I would say that the person who misjudged Jones' actual ability by the greatest degree is James Jones himself, the guy who said he was a #2 WR and would have 1000 receiving yards. He was a good #3 WR and a #2 only for the neediest of teams in his prime. He ran a 4.6 forty at the combine (4.58 at his pro day), 1.63 10-yard dash. So, not fast, lacks acceleration, good strength (22 reps), decent vertical (35") but a guy who knew how to use his vertical leaping ability, 7.06 3 cone so not overly quick. Good athlete with strong hands who could fight for contested passes and adjust to the ball. Comeuppance is wrong, imo.

I don't watch Oakland, so IDK where to peg him for 2015. No terms announced, as far as I know; it might be inflated due to our need. More than Vet Min, less than $2 million/yr. Watch the guaranteed $ - probably lots of roster bonuses, maybe $100k signing bonus.

I didn't have any problem with the Packers moving on from Jones and fully support his return. I don't think I've had a change of heart. He was a slightly above average WR then and is a few years older but the same guy now.

It's more of a change in circumstance on the team. When he left, he was getting more money than a Packers team with plenty of quality vet WRs should have paid. With Jordy's injury, signing a vet on the cheap that knows the offense and Rodgers is a good move.

Some of the best news I have heard on a while. All the guy does ...is catch touchdowns. They realized it was our time and the did a good job to try and somewhat make up for the loss of Jordy. Jones has good hands runs good routes and more than anything gives AR a reliable 3rd option. I bet AR had a little sigh of relief today. This is our fn year TT recognized that and see ya in SB 50!!

No, it is up to the best QB in the NFL to utilize the resources provided by his employer in the best possible way. I don't apply this to Janis much since wrong routes lead to interceptions, but it does apply to his refusal for far too long last season to throw the ball to a wide open Richard Rodgers last year. This is my only pet peeve regarding what I consider the Rodgers diva stuff.

I'm happy that Jones is back but I think this move tells us that either Cobb and/or Montgomery might not be ready to go against Chicago. I mentioned in an earlier post to another article that Rodgers probably lobbied for Jones again as he did a few seasons ago. Either way this is a solid move for the Packers given their lack of WR experience after Cobb and Adams. Go Pack. Thanks, Since '61

Cobb might not be. But we could play half our team and still beat Chicago in week 1. They are a AAA ball club this year.

That said, JJ can't run anymore. He'll catch the ball. Run good routes. But he never was a burner and his speed is below average now. Yes, 9.1 YPC was partly due to a bad offense with a rook QB. But also because he couldn't create much separation anymore before or after the catch. Just like Greg his last year in GB.

But he's reliable. And that's what we need. Too much youth/inexperience behind Cobb and Adams in the WRs. Now that is fixed. 2 good guys outside. 2 good guys inside. Only have to play 1 of the 3 rooks at any given time, depending on who progresses.

But the long bombs off play action are probably a thing we're not going to see this year. That was Jordy's specialty. :(

Jones is good at the semi-bomb if he can get separation. He's a strong guy that can get the extra yards after the catch. But then, we'll have to sacrifice someone on the team.

There are a lot of people in the world named James Jones, so maybe we aren't thinking of the same one?

Jones totally sucked last year at yards after the catch. Out of the 162 players who caught more than 25 passes last year, James Jones ranked 148th in average yards after the catch (3.1). Numbers according to ESPN.

Also, even I am good at the semi-bomb... if I can get separation.

Having said that, I do approve of the signing. I'm guessing Jones can be a reliable possession receiver who will move the chains. But he's not going to be much more.

Number 1 it takes a ton of pressure off of Montgomery, remember it took some time for Adams to be productive consistently even with his obvious skill set. It also helps both Cobb and Adams, one or the other without Nelson has to have the safety over them without another outside veteran threat. It appears Montgomery is targeted more for the slot (comments on how he is a bigger Cobb by the coaching staff) and this will allow him to follow that route instead of suddenly moving outside. In addition it hardly puts a dent in the cap space and adds to the character in the locker room, Jones is a class indvidual.

Not to be a downer Lou. But Adams never was consistent last year. Terribly inconsistent isn't unfair. 120 Yds vs NE followed by 4 rec for 29 yds the entire month of Dec. For every good game he had he followed w/ a month of relatively invisible play.

Packers will need him to become a consistent player in a big way this year. He needs to basically double, if not more, his production from last year.

The difference between Adams rookie year and Mont's rookie year is knowing the playbook and playing in different positions. Montgomery played all over the field in college. Adams did not.

If this James Jones signing does what I think it will and takes pressure off Montgomery plus allows him to be more efficient -- we will see plays like the 1 he made against the Eagles taken to the house instead of running out of gas.

I've been trying to figure out why a bad team like Oakland would cut JJ, so I did some searching.

From NFL.com - " It looks like the 31-year-old is getting squeezed out with the additions of receivers Michael Crabtree and first-round draft pick Amari Cooper(4th pick in first round).

Cutting Jones would save the Raiders nearly $3.5 million, according to league records, which probably put McKenzie over the edge. Jones' salary-cap number was bigger than any other receiver on the roster.

The veteran should have no problem receiving a camp invite, albeit at a lower salary. Over 16 games last season, it didn't seem like Jones was running on empty.

Personally, we'd love to see him back in Green Bay putting up almost a touchdown per game."

The Raiders also got back a young receiver from injury - Streater, who had good numbers when healthy.

Jones had this to say about his stay in Oakland and his 9.1 average - "“It was my first year ever playing the slot,” Jones told Sirius XM Radio. “That’s not where my strengths are at. I do whatever the coach tells me to do and, with a young quarterback in Derek Carr, they felt like having me in the slot would best suit him. I did what they wanted me to do.

“…I believe I’m stronger on the outside. That’s where I do all my damage, making tough catches in traffic. I learned a lot in the slot. I caught a lot of balls but, as you can see, I didn’t have a lot of long catches. When I was outside, I was really successful.”

That explains Oakland, so what about NY? Well he led the team in preseason with 15 catches for a 12.5 average. But the Giants already have the fourth best receiving group according to PFF. They're pretty well set with Beckham, Cruz and Randle plus they have some young guys they like. The Giants expect the guys lower on the rung to play ST's which favors the younger guys who will log time there.

Jones played well for the Giants and for that matter the Raiders . He just got caught up in the numbers game - depth, age and $'s (same with his first stint with GB).

None of this means he won't play well for GB. On the contrary he was about the best one year rent-a-player they could have gotten.

One less obvious benefit comes from J.J, concentration.

Do you remember back when he dropped a few too many passes. The following year he was talking to himself all game long, "concentrate", "concentrate", "keep your head in the game".

It worked very well for him and he made some excellent contested grabs that year, ones he had no business making. Now that example of intensity is something guys like Janis and Montgomery could benefit from.

1) The Packers are so flush with cash that whatever it is they will pay JJ is irrelevant. They still have money to get whatever else is out there that might trigger TT's interest.

2) WR not knowing where to be = interceptions. Turn-overs = losses. The young guys need experience, yes, but if they don't have the playbook down running around without knowing where to be won't help much.

Signing JJ was a good move if he has anything left in the tank. Based on his numbers last year, he does.

Well, I was against this move... But I really respect James Jones as person... And I was sad when he was cut 2 years ago. He was not No 1, but he was better than average guy who was all green and gold...
Now, I would not like to see some of young receivers cut, not even to be signed on PS. But that is very likely what will be. Yes, I know there is 2 places on PS yet to be filled, but I have feeling that those places are keeping for returning of suspended players... So, who you might cut? You may put Goodson on PUP list designated to return. That would free place for James w/o cutting any WR and still preserving those 2 places on PS. Do we really need 9 at OL? If not Josh Walker is eligible for PS, but somehow I do not think he would stay there for a long...
So, this is tricky... And it will be interesting...
To conclude: Welcome back, James Jones. I would love you to prove I was completely wrong when I was against your signing!

I was totally against this move, because I think of Jones as an average WR. I think they did this cuz AR wanted a familiar face out there. I hope James stats from last year are because of a young QB- hoping there's something left in the tank. I gotta admit, I hate to see any of the 53 lose a spot to JJ. In Ted we trust, eh?

I just wanted to add my voice to the chorus. I think the signing of JJ was an excellent move by TT. It takes out some of the sting of losing Jordy.

If JJ can stay healthy, I think we can expect of him somewhere in the neighborhood of 70-80 catches and around 1000 yards. Having him now takes the pressure off the entire receiving corps. Cobb won’t feel like he has to bear the entire burden of losing Jordy. He can relax a little bit, play looser, and I think that will help him perform better. Although we all feel Adams is ready to take the next step, we really don’t know for sure and probably won’t know until at least four games into the season. Montgomery also looks like he’ll do well in the league but, again, we don’t know that for sure either and probably won’t know that until at least halfway through the season.

All in all, I’m really happy with the signing and now I’m ready for what I think will be a historic season!

I'm the Happiest Packer fan there is. They should have never let JJ go. I remember hearing how redundant he was because of Boykin. What a MISTAKE. Welcome back JJ. You are a CLASS ACT!! Hope you have a Great & SB Wining year. In case anyone wants to know, Vegas has GB right on top to Win the SB at 15/2. Hard to believe, considering our Defense. LVT

Hey 4thand1, I've moved full time to Las Vegas, & haven't seen much of GB. I've been battling Lung Cancer since March. I've had 1/3 of my right lung, & a large tumor removed last March 31st. So far I'm doing ok, except for constant pain in my back, where pieces of 2 ribs were removed.

Anyway, you know I'm happy about JJ being back. I hope we can score 35 pts per game. I think our defensive line is pretty good, but just like the last 3 years, there isn't much behind them. I'm optimistic about GB's chances this year, but our offense will have to play lights out. I think both Minnesota & Detroit will be tough this year. We should beat Chicago. I think Jeffery's is hurt. I just do not trust our defensive backs. IMO they are too small. I hope AR plays Lights Out.

LV-Tom,

Sorry to hear about your medical problems. I was one who thought Boykin could replace James Jones. I was wrong, but damned if I know what happened to Boykin. Glad to see that you're well enough to type!

Thegreatreynoldo, Thanks!! So far I'm doing ok. They told me in March they got it all. I just finished Radiation. We'll see. I haven't been able to keep up with GB news. I am a fan of Abredaris, but I see he didn't make the team. I thought the guy was a Great Receiver at WI. What's the deal with him? I'm surprised John Kuhn made the team. Also I heard Monti Ball cleared waivers yesterday. This is probably old news, but why did MM give up the play calling, & what is most fans opinions on that?

Better to miss a lot of sports news and get your health back. Lots of moves, hope they work out. MM wants to oversee everything, especially special teams. Abby to injured ,not enough playing time. I gave up second guessing coaches and GM's long ago. Your news sounds good, glad to hear.

Abby had the knee injury last year in TC and this year he was out a month with a concussion (his 2nd confirmed concussion but some say he had several more in college). Abby looked decent in the last preseason game - it was too little, too late. GB put Abby on the PS - I think so he can fully heal and prove that he can stay healthy before committing a precious roster spot to him.

The Company Line is that MM gave up play calling, so he could focus on all three team areas: STs, D and offense, and have more understanding of what in totality is going on during games instead of having his nose in the playbook. Examples of ignorance (not meant as a pejorative) of what was going on during games include his statement that he did not know that Sherman was injured in the Seattle game and that he did not realize that CM3 was on the sidelines during the 4th quarter against Seattle. Many of we fans believe MM is the best coach Monday through Saturday, and MM can still help put in the game plan and script the opening series.

My own astringent view is that MM feels he is a better ST coach than Slocum or Zook. Go Pack but more importantly Good Health to both LV Tom and GB!

Jones got a 10 mil dollar contract with Oakland? TT was not going to overpay for an aging #3 receiver. Now he gets him back with 2 more years experience and is healthy, key word healthy. 3 times he was forced out by youth, (man I would kill to be 31 again). This WILL turn out to be a very good move.

"2 more years experience"; positive spin:)

But yes, besides slightly busting your chops, it IS his experience and familiarity with 12 that brought him back here.

Long term, however, GB has to keep Montgomerying, Whiting, and Janisizing.

Of course they keep the young guys. Jones may or may not survive the entire season. But if he can help now its what matters most.

Feel bad for White, but I think it makes sense to cut a WR when adding one. Rather see that than lose OL or DB depth - especially since they're gonna need to cut 2 more in the coming weeks. My guesses would be Boyd and....maybe Goodson.

As long as what they expect of him is to be the number three receiver then he can be useful. His experience in Oakland shows he can not become a number one go to guy. But if he's the number three guy behind Cobb and Adams, he can move the sticks some and be a good target in the red zone.

Still waiting to see who they send packing for him though.

They still need to cut two more people. I don't see how they keep Kuhn. Two fullbacks? I don't see how they keep Janis either. Those two are expendable now they we have James Jones back.
Oh, I forgot, he sucked the last year he played for us and sucked the past seasons as well and the Giants did think much of him either. Maybe he just got a lot better in those two years?
At least lazy a MM won't have to spend a lot of time teaching him the routes.

THey don't need to cut 2 more. They are at 53. When Datone returns after wk 1, they'll release either Goodson or Banjo and when Guion returns after wk 3, Boyd is the most likely casualty.

Go away UR Fubared.

Is it too early to call for Raji to be the one that gives way to Guion?

It is too early. I don't think Guion plays a down at NT in base. Guion might be a guy playing inside in 2-4-5 schemes, but I view Guion as the starting LDE. He is better than Boyd.
