Packers Activate Quarless, Place Montgomery On IR

The rookie wide receiver could never make it back from a bad high ankle sprain.

From the team website:

The Green Bay Packers have activated TE Andrew Quarless from injured reserve – designated for return and placed WR Ty Montgomery on injured reserve. The transactions were announced Monday by Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson.

Quarless, the first of two fifth-round choices by the Packers in the 2010 NFL Draft, has started 26 of 58 games played for Green Bay in his career, registering 87 receptions for 923 yards (10.6 avg.) and six touchdowns. He played in three games this season before suffering a knee injury in Week 3 versus Kansas City.

Montgomery played in six games with three starts this season, catching 15 passes for 136 yards (9.1 avg.) and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 14 yards on three attempts (4.7 average)  and averaged 31.1 yards on seven kickoff returns.

You had to figure this move was coming for Montgomery, who was just never able to make it back from a bad high ankle sprain.

Not sure how much of a difference Quarless makes, but getting Rodgers another pass catcher he has shown trust in throughout the years is undoubtedly a good thing.

Bummer for Monty and the Pack. Was hoping Q would replace a DB or OL. :(

At least Andrew is still a good addition. He brings much needed speed and athleticism to the TE group.

I'm hoping to no longer see Kuhn split out wide after this roster move.

So, Andrew isn't much faster and quicker than Richard Rodgers???

So, Andrew isn't much more athletic than Richard Rodgers???

Cow, please have a seat.

I was holding out hope that Montgomery was going to be able to come back before the post season and add a new dimension to the offense. Unfortunately that isn't going to happen now.

Hopefully Quarless will be able to add some much needed athleticism to the TE position. Should be a major improvement over Perillo.

With Monty going to IR, the last possible hope for restoring this offense is GONE. He and Drew together might haven JUST BARELY enough to get the offense going again! DARN!!!

I agree Chad, the Packers have to completely makeover the WR Group this offseason. When you add in the OL, DE, OLB, TE, as Huge needs, (Leave Clay Inside) Thompsons draft and develop approach is just too slow. I have no doubt Rodgers would have at least 2 SB's had Thompson been even remotely active in Free Agency.

Now I wonder what might have REALLY happened to that kids ankle. Another missed diagnosis by the Packers medical staff? I know ankles are tricky and he had setbacks but still...

The Packers don't need to completely make over the WR group this offseason, and it's almost certain that they won't. No one was complaining in 2014, when Rodgers threw for 4400 yards and 38 TDs mostly to Nelson, Cobb, Adams, Boykin and Janis, with two receivers going over 1000 yards and making the Pro Bowl. Get Nelson back, add Monty and Abby to the mix and that's what they'll have.

Of all the wild conspiracy theories, the "medical staff" one is my favorite. Rumor has it that Pat McKenzie (who was named the NFL's physician of the year in 2011) has already broken and rebroken Monty's ankle at least six times.

As for Nelson, we don't know how he'll come back, and you're right that he's getting older. However, all reports so far are that his rehab has been extraordinary, but we'll see.

As for Cobb - so you're saying that last year Cobb was a stud because teams did not yet realize that he couldn't get open? Uh...

Adams has, in fact, fallen off the earth. Give him better receivers around him, and a corresponding decrease in the quality of the man covering him, and he can bounce back.

Janis didn't do jack in 2014 either, yet the passing offense was very good. More than that, there's a pretty good chance Janis isn't on the team next year, but gets bumped off by Monty, Abby or both.

So do you believe that "12" - like Adams - could possibly ever get his confidence back, or is he ruined for life?

For the record, I've been pretty critical of Rodgers all along. And if you want to say that he is as much at fault as anyone in the passing game, I won't argue. But sports, as you must know, are funny things. Confidence matters, and it certainly isn't irretrievable. Most of the time when teams inexplicably "get hot" that is all that happened.

The Packers right now are most assuredly not "hot," and it may be a lost season as a result. But that doesn't mean the team needs to be blown up.

And if teams want to commit to covering Cobb 1 on 1 all of the time, I'll take that.

Last year, when Nelson was on the field and Cobb caught 90 balls for 1300 yards and a dozen TDs, were they single covering Cobb or double covering? If single, then Cobb was exceedingly productive. If double, then he's godlike. Which one?

You are asserting that this year Cobb rarely if ever faces anything more than single coverage. First, I don't agree with that. Second, if last year is any indication, then he can still be an extremely productive player. And yeah, I'll take my chances lining him up in single coverage if and when a guy like Nelson is on the field.

I understand that you are assuming Nelson is essentially finished forever, and that Cobb isn't going to benefit that way again unless a new stud receiver is brought in. Maybe you're right about Nelson, but I doubt it.

Say anything bad about Thompson and wow only three dislikes so far that is sure surprising. Draft and develop works if most of the players develop into difference makers. Lately more have been jags then anything. This team needs more difference makers while Rodgers is in his prime years.

Only surprise is Quarless . Just knew Montgomery was out for year. We have only had bad luck this year it seems with ankle injuries. Sure hope he recovers. Liked what he showed.

I'm excited to get back drew. Maybe we can see some 3 te sets that McCarthy has used on occasion. Might help us on 3rd and 1 having an athletic blocker like quarless instead of an extra wide receiver.

I must admit I was on the side of cutting him for his actions this summer but right now if he can help convert a few third downs I don't give a shit.

Clewless may help over Richard r and mont mg may have other issues besides ankle. I see a Franklin situation here. A guy to frail to play the big stage? Funny you never read how disappointed he was for not coming back and how hard he was working on it. Something odd going on. I'm an ankle injury expert and it don't take this long.

You are definitely clueless and fubared. Montgomery is a big dude and he has a high ankle sprain. Look it up. It isn't a twisted ankle you can run on a week later. Jackass.

Going to play the villain here, but I'm completely underwhelmed by this news.

Not a big Quarless fan. He's JAG. Maybe a better blocker than RR and a bit faster but RR could be the slowest receiver in the whole league. Despite that, RR has more TD receptions in one year than Quarless has in his entire career. And keep in mind, the Pack were positioning RR to replace Quarless as the number one TE at the beginning of the year. Even they were ready to move on.

Losing Montgomery for the rest of the year is a big blow. We didn't get to see a lot of him but he flashed in brief PT and could have been the dynamic playmaker this team is currently in short supply of.
Quarless for Ty - ugh!

I agree completely. This is bad news. Quarless has different strengths than RR and should provide some help if he is healthy, but overall he is JAG. I don't think Monty was a great WR but he could have added a new dimension to the offense. Looks to me like the only hope for an improved offense is better health across the board, especially the OL.

What kind of prize do you get when you reach 10,000 dislikes. You will be less than 1,000 from reaching your goal by the end of the day. What a guy!

Conversations? All you want to do is argue. That aint casual conversation. You hardly ever have a point and you are almost always wrong. The pack will be 8-8,9-7 at best, Cassel, etc. Too many to list.
