I am just happy it is over.
The field conditions were terrible and the refs seemed blind or stupid in the first half because I am kind of sure you can't grab a receiver (Nelson) with your off hand but whatever...

WE WON!

I'd be interested to see how Hawk graded out. He missed on a few crossing patterns, then seemed slow to recover. But, he had a few pressuess and it was cool to see him blasting thru the midfle. Still, pass pro is a liability, and that's a concern.

Devante will be a great receiver next year,
... if he doesn't kill us first.

Taking Hawk out on third down was a start. Now If capers could take him out on first and second down THAT would be a huge improvement.

Hawk = -2.6 by PFF. He was 2nd worst on D (behind Neal).

He is now -12.2 on the season, or 56th "best" out of 61 NFL ILBers.

He is terrible and is getting worse as he gets older.

I'd say slower, but he has always been slow.

Look for Belichek to exploit AJ in the run & pass game all Sunday long.

I am pretty sure that there are defensive lineman that are faster than AJ Hawk. The ILB position needs a complete revamp after the season. A win is a win, but GB will get killed if they play like this against NE next week.

P.S. completely agree about the horn. Whoever operates that thing needs to have a horn shoved up where the sun don't shine

Not having Perry hurt us in both the run game defense and how they used Matthews. No Perry means more Brad Jones in Sub Packages, get healthy Perry.

I agree 100% Mike Neal was not good. Doesn't change the fact that the ILB position is devoid of good players outside of Matthews who is more of a OLB

Two years ago, RB was a huge hole on our team, and after one draft it managed to become a strength. Last year, Safety was a huge hole on our team, and after one draft (well, two if you count Hyde), it seems to be strongly trending up. With that trend in mind, I look forward to ILB being a position of strength next year!

It is crazy to think the last 2 years our weakest positions became positions of strengths the following year. Major props to Thompson in identifying the clear weakness at positions and finding the players to improve them.

I would say that ILB and TE have been the weakest positions this year. Although moving Clay inside has really improved the position. And our TE's are stepping up their game the last few weeks.

*The Ugly - Every time I come to this site I get Pilipino mail order bride and Sweet Asian dating ads. I completely understand using different approaches to monetize the site, but this is a bit out there. I mean, to each their own, but...

FTR - I don't visit dating, Pilipino, mail order bride, or Asian sites...like ever. So it seems targeted ads isn't what's happening.

Good - Lacy, Quarless, Burnett

Bad - Williams, Adams, Hyde

Ugly - McCarthy's challenge success rate.

I heard a theory yesterday on some of McCarthy's challenges, especially like the one he used yesterday. He wants to use it to disrupt the other team's momentum, and rather than just using a timeout he challenges the play called, because a challenge on average takes longer then a normal time out. Which in the end he uses a timeout, and like yesterday it disrupted the Vikings offense's momentum.

That's quite possible, though the Vikings still scored a TD on that drive so not sure how effective it was.

They did score on that drive? I couldn't remember if they did or not. I was told they didn't, so i was taking that person's word on it.

Either way, if that is McCarthy's way to get a little extra time to regroup, I think its not a bad way to use a time out.

But for his challenges, I think he needs to find someone to tell him what to challenge and whatnot to. Because he is not good at winning challenges.

He does have some shockingly bad challenges, but I actually didn't mind the one yesterday. It was a long-shot, but there was much to gain and nothing to lose.

I didn't mind yesterdays either to be honest. Especially if he was using it to try and slow down the Vikings momentum they had been building.

We have to admit though, he has to be one of the worst head coaches at challenge success rate.

My question still does remain, does he have someone telling him to challenge these plays or is he challenging them on his own?

Yeah, with each passing week (and bad challenge) I wonder more and more who instigates the challenges. It can't be McCarthy, since he doesn't really have a good view of replays, can it?

Somebody who's on Twitter, ask one of the beat writers to figure out who handles challenges for the Packers, please!

I was surprised he didn't challenge Nelson's catch along the sideline.

And now seeing Nagler's retweet - it looks like it was 100% a catch.

Yeah, I thought that was a catch as well...

Regarding that play though. Bahktiari was called for holding on that play. The Vikings declined it.
If the Packers go and challenge the ruling on the field, (after the Vikings declined the penalty), and the play is overturned, do the Vikings get to change their decision to decline the penalty? Or is the penalty enforced automatically?

I think that is why McCarthy didn't challenge that play, because there was a holding penalty on it.

But if he challenged the play and it was ruled a catch, then the Vikes accept the penalty and the Pack get another shot at 3rd down.

Yeah, and I agree with that. I wouldn't mind another shot especially with Rodgers as our QB. They were around mid field to if I remember.

My question still remains though. If they challenged the play call, can Minnesota change their decision to decline the penalty? What is the rule on that?

It also seemed like either the TV crew was not showing the replays or that stadium is not set up with enough cameras to get adequate replays. They didn't show good angles for several of the debatable calls.

"We have to admit though, he has to be one of the worst head coaches at challenge success rate. "

=============================

Is he? I know he's not terribly successful at challenges. But are other NFL coaches significantly better? It's anecdotal but I've seen other team's fanbases saying the exact same thing--that their guy cannot win a challenge to save his life.

I'm sure the stats are out there. There are stats for everything. I would be interested in seeing them. Either way, it won't change much of anything. Challenge flag success is way, way far down the list of attributes necessary for HC success.

I wondered about that at the time. I was thinking that maybe he was thinking of calling a timeout anyway, so why not challenge and give yourself a chance of a fluke overturn and extra time.

Somethings they were really ticky tacky with, some others they weren't. Like Defensive holding/Pass interference. Vikings DB's were all over Nelson. They didn't call those at all...

The one play I wish i could see a good replay on was the Adams block in the back penalty. When I saw it live and the replay of it, it looked like the DB dove for Lacy's legs more then was blocked in the back. But i didn't see a good view of it.

Feel like I gotta keep being the Hyde advocate. Agree he had an off day, but take away his pick and sack and where would that game have ended up. Seemed to me like even when he screwed up it was his aggressiveness that got the best of him. He's still a young guy that needs to learn when to be aggressive and when to play it smart. I like his motor and seems to me like when its on the line he's always in the middle of the play. Good or bad. Give him a year or so and he'll be all pro. IMO.

The Ugly : Packers fans who think that not scoring 50+ points is evidence that the Packers are doomed.

In the past a Vikings games was exciting - but this one didn't have much luster going in - it felt more like just a perfunctory "get the 'W'" game and get through it. Maybe some of the players were feeling the same. Who knows. But with New England looming, a game that has far more cache, how could there not be a little drop-off having to prepare for the Yawn...Vikings?

This season Green Bay has won just about every way you want a Championship caliber team to win:

Comebacks
Blowouts
Grind it out wins against good opponents
Grind it out wins against inferior opponents
Defensive dominance
Offensive dominance
Winning with the run game
Winning with the passing game
Regaining the Lambeau Mystique

A win over New England would just be another feather in the cap and it could well be the signature win everybody's been looking for.

'This season Green Bay has won just about every way you want a Championship caliber team to win:'

This is why I love this team. They can win anyway it needs to. They don't have to win big to win. That is one reason why i think this Vikings game was a good thing for them. Especially after having back to back 50+ points, big blowout games. They need to play those close games that make you refocus.

Another thing I like about this Vikings game was they made a lot of mistakes, and didn't play their best game, yet they still won.

THE BET

OK, so the Packers are closing in on 9 wins. Lots of folks are looking forward to losing a certain frequent poster. To be clear, the bet was that he would not post for the playoffs.

I also want to be clear about WHY I did it. I didn't make the bet because I hate his posts; some of his posts are actually very smart. But some of his posts are just flat out pot stirring. After his first season with us he even openly admitted that he was deliberately trying to stir the pot, and he promised to get better. And he did, for about three months. Then it was back to baiting people.

His 8-8 call was flat-out baiting. Why is it baiting?Because when the Packers finish 8-7-1 the year before with their best player on the sidelines for about 1/3 of the season, you know 8-8 is a B.S. call. So I made the bet because I wanted him to chew on it all year long.

So here's the deal. He may welch on his bet. He may not. But you can enforce the bet by simply not mentioning him, not referring to him, and not replying to his posts. That's what I'm going to do starting the minute the Lions game is over. That's what I encourage all of you to do until the Super Bowl is over. And maybe next year we get more thoughtful posts. Or maybe not. Either way, if we as a group choose to ignore the baiters I hope that we will see more posts from some of the smarter football guys who have drifted away.

I am really looking forward to this game as a yardstick for the defense. I wasn't at the Vikings game, so not sure about receivers being open. Sat in the end zone for the Eagles game, seeing the whole field, and there were receivers frequently 1-2 yards open. Sanchez couldn't hit them. I'd like to see where this pass defense is against a top QB.
