Bad: a stale game plan for offense; run on first, run on second, try to pass on third. Way too predictable.

GBP WRs unable to get separation from opponent DBs if the opponent's coverage is physical. There could/should have been multiple PI calls against 9ers if any other ref crew had been on, but, the refs were going to let them play ball....and GBP WRs weren't getting enough separation.

No RB screens to slow pass rush? No help for Barclay?

The good: the 4th win of the season...despite it not pretty.

I don't agree. GB had 10 series. Only 3 contained run, run, pass punt.

1st Series:
Inc.; -1 run; Sack/Penalty gives first down;
Inc; Pass 8, Pass 10 first down
Pass 5; run 6; first down
Pass 12 first down
run 5; pass 19 first down
run 2, pass 9 for a TD

2nd series:
run 9 (montgomery from the backfield), Pass - scramble 12 1st down
Pass 6, Mont. rush 1, false start 3rd and 8, Pass/scramble 8; Punt.

3rd series
run 5, run 3, inc., punt (1st time the dreaded run, run, pass). Had 3rd&2

4th series:
run 1, Pass 8, Inc. punt [had a 3rd and 1 but passed]

5th series:
pass 3, Inc (holding - 2nd & 17) Pass 36 to James Jones 1st down
pass 4, run 5, run 0; 4th and 1 run for 10 = first down
pass 3, Inc., Pass 6, 4th & 1 run 6 first down
Inc., Inc., Pass/sack; Missed Field goal Half time

6th series:
run 3, Inc./hold 2nd &17; pass 8, Pass 11 first down
Inc., Pass 3, pass 38 to James Jones - first down
run 4, Inc., pass/scramble 17 to one yard line first down
run 1 Kuhn TD

7th series:
Pass 8, Pass 7
run 5, run 12
run 2, run 1, Inc. Field goal 17-3 [2nd run, run, pass FG]

8th series
pass 9, run 15 first down
Pass 8, Pass/scramble/Hold Sitton 2nd & 12; Pass 3, Pass/sack Punt

9th series
run 7, run 0, Sack, Punt (3rd dreaded run, run pass punt) late in game

10th series
run -1, run 10, run 3 first down
run 7, run 3 first down (2 minute warning)
run 4, run 2, run 3, delay of game and punt.

Anyway, there is the playcalling for anyone to evaluate. I remember that two screens were called but were covered so Rodgers went to the other side.

THX TGR....you're post are to the usual high quality. I think it was the 3rd and 7th and 9th series that bugged me the most. One could argue the 9th series was to burn the clock, but that's where some of us wished for more aggressive play than to just burn clock. On the 4th, I actually expected and hoped a 3rd-1 run play (yes, counter to my complaint) rather than the more aggressive pass play actually called.
On 7th series, I thought a play action pass on 1st down would have been great following a 12 yard run.
Maybe just those holding penalties caused the offense to go flat, and appearances of lack of attack were more than reality. THX

Excellent info as usual tgr. GB started grinding the clock in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Rodgers was the best defensive player on the field.

I think the offensive problems from yesterday were far more about the 5 guys up front having their worst collective game of the season than the game plan coming in.

When they executed the plan, it generally worked ok. It was rare to see good execution yesterday, especially up front.

This was the worst game by far for the o-line. SF seemed to get pressure from everywhere, especially the right side. PFF won't be kid to Barclay, nor should they. He stunk! Running game should be in the good, Lacy had a lot of tough yards.
Also bad line judge.

No real argument here. A little love for Richard Rodgers would be OK. Raji's play was encouraging again, despite that maddening whiff on the non-TFL (Carlos Hyde). Shields had a pretty decent game, I thought. Bakhtiari could be added to "bad." (Pretty much the whole O-line could.)

And to be fair, we probably should add Kaepernick and the whole SF offense to the "ugly" list.

I agree with everything said, but want to offer another perspective. that is, our bar is pretty high this year. being an old guy, (not to pull that I-was-there-when card) Ive seen a lot of bad defenses. Heck, we all have, and fairly recently. This is a damn good team and the best defense we've seen in a while. In a few months, they might show themselves to be the best D since the minster of defense prowled the line. That's exciting as heck to me, and definitely more telling than the misfires.

Offense had more of those. Montgomery's made errors, but has acquitted himself well. He's had only a handful of touches and has looked very good on a few. QB1 was a bit off. But, really? He'll become the best ever to play the game. This was a blip. Man-gina game-planned well. So, if this was a bad game, it was a bad game by an excellent team who occasionally looked stronger and more powerful than any Packer team I've seen in years. And, I'm freaking excited.

The Packers are 4-0 at the quarter point and have a Top 10 Defense, a Top 10 Offense, 2nd in the NFL in Sacks, 3rd in the NFL in Rushing, and the best QB in the NFL. This is the Packers "Team" they've had in the last few years.

I'd have to put Kaepernick in the ugly. I probably could have played S for the Packers last night and it would not have mattered the way he was throwing the ball. Earlier this week someone on the radio was arguing that really he has been pretty good this season, the cast around him just stinks. Not so much on the pretty good part. Put a little pressure on him and his form disappears. Unlike #12, who could probably put a ball into the back of a Ford F150 doing 55 mph with his feet up in a Lazy-Boy, Kaep ain't hitting s#!t if his form ain't perfect.

Both o-lines were giving up tons of pressure. Rodgers dealt with it good enough to put up 17, with another drive that produced a make-able FG attempt that Crosby just missed.

Kaepernick simply could not cope with the pressure and physical play from the Packer defense. He was spraying the ball everywhere but on target. And by the end of the game, he was looking for the turf when he decided to tuck the ball away.

He's certainly regressed from the guy that has made the Packer defense look bad. But credit to them for not allowing him to right the ship on his game. They've had so much trouble with mobile QBs over the years. Matthews in the middle has made a huge difference in the way they deal with mobile QBs.

Packers put a lot of pressure on Kaep, but I don't think that had much to do w/ his passing. He's just a terrible passer w/ poor mechanics and a scattershot arm. Some short passes were hitting the dirt 5 yds off target. Someone needs to put a lot of work into him to teach him how to throw, apparently that has never happened. He's got a Really long throwing motion, which leads to more poor throws anyway. Honestly, what he needs in McCarthy QB school, for about a year straight to become a good passer.

Kaep might be out of the NFL before his fat contract expires! He's terrible as a passer.

With all due respect Hank, I think Kap hasn't regressed, he's as bad as he always was. Just because the Packers D wasn't ready 2-3 years ago doesn't mean he was good. If anyone watched any other 49ers games those years it was evident to even the untrained eye that he's amazingly erratic. The expression by the SF receiver after Kap threw 10 yard pass in the dirt in front of him was priceless.

How many of his passes up the sideline ended up in the front row of the stands? At least 4 or 5. How the hell does that happen??

His passes were either in the dirt 2 yards in front of the receiver or 10 yards over their head. His best pass was a 6 inch glorified hand-off.

That deep sideline throw to Torrey Smith was a beautifully thrown ball. Randall had great coverage but a pass that perfect is almost impossible to defend.

But that play and the glorified handoff accounted for half the passing yard for SF yesterday. If you factor in yards lost via sack, it was 2/3 of their pass game yardage on those 2 plays.

What's that I see ? A Nick Perry in the good column? I have got to be seing things haha. Seriously though I'm proud of this guy. He has to hear all the chatter and all of that "bust" talk that people have been throwing out there (yeah Datone I think you are sneaking away from the bust category too bud) and Nick as just slowly progressed. Hearing Aikman or Buck I forget who say that we had some real talent at OLB was awesome. It seems like everyone from our 1st rounders all the way down to our late rounders and udfas are making plays. I mean Jayrone is making plays ....in a game that counts!! Anyways ...good category ..in could pretty much put the entire defense in there. Hyde made some good tackles HHCD was hitting hard as usual 37 played great Randall played well and even Rollins smashed Hyde great job guys. Offense yeah JJ...Ur our mvp! But man ...Richard Rodgers be like Jermichael who? I mean he's not fast but his hands are awesome and he's tough to bring down. And finally if 88 keeps playing this well he might end up in Irvs 88 club. Montgomery fights for every freakin yard n I love his physicality. Steal of the draft. Ok I was excited I'll stop now. Undefeated still GPG!!

Perry has definitely flashed these last two weeks.

As for HHCD, there was one play in particular that stood out. 1st half, Kap was running and HHCD came flying in out of nowhere and got him down for a minimal gain. impressive range.

Yes, the Packer D is playing fast.

My belief is that the Pack O was off because, lets see, WR1 &3 are out; WR2 isnt at 100% WR4 is a rookie; and there's a reason WR5&6 arent higher. JJ is hungry for another ring; but really? There is a reason WR 1&2 get paid what they do, they're better than the rest.

Before being too harsh in some of our assessments, let's remember that San Fran is essentially playing to keep their season alive. They didn't want to go down 1-3 with another home loss, especially to a team that they see ahead of them in the playoff standings. Their defense played very well. Their offense is just plain limited.

The Good:
The Defense specifically the front 7 of the defense.

The Bad:
Pass protection

The Ugly:
Don Barclay.

The Defense was great. The run defense has been lights out the last few games. The pass rush has been even better. Applying a lot of pressure. But to go with that the DB's have been playing really well.
Since the horrible week 1 game Sam Shields has been really good the last couple of games. Hayward has played well. Randall gave up plays but had a great pass break up in the endzone. That's a play that I don't think Tramon Williams makes last year. Rollins continues to impress me. I expect to see more and more playing time for him as the season goes on.

I am looking forward to seeing how the defense develops throughout the year. Our young DB's should only get better. And I have been pleasantly surprised with the play of our ILB's.

It was great to see Clay's sack and kissed bicep. Seems like a little bad blood with Kaep over the last few games. But the play I liked the most was Nick Perry Beating Joe Staley for a sack !! Seems like Staley was one of the few who always had Clay's number when Clay was on the outside. Anyhow they sure took our short passing game away, making Aaron scramble and holding the ball longer than he wanted because of not much separation from the outside receivers. I still think this had a lot to do with our O-LINE not looking very good this game. Your Thoughts ?

Capers finally figured out how to defend Kaep, don't let him run for 200 yds and make him throw. Whoo-hoo!

Why don't they give Barclay any help out there? They must know he's a stiff at this point.

The good, Packers defense, run game and time of possession, 36 + minutes. It's great to see the Packers defense play a strong game on the road when the offense was not as sharp as usual. When the DL plays well all aspects of the defense are better. Plus getting off the field and getting the ball back to the offense is huge even if they are not as prolific as usual. Special teams did a good job covering punt and kick returns.
The bad, too many penalties.
The ugly, Don Barclay.

Good: Big Mike setting goals and hitting every one. Better special teams...check. Better defense....check. Go 4-0 in the first quarter of the season....check. Secretly get revenge on Seattle and 9ers....check aaaannnddd check.

The also good: when our offense plays mediocre and our D can get it done.

Bad: Oline.

Silver lining on the bad: Oline gets their worst game of the season out of the way on a short week while flying out west....and now they can get it together the rest of the year.

Ugly: Still the injuries. A healthier Lacy and Cobb will make a huge difference in addition to the other guys who are not even playing.

Apologies: I will not call out cow anymore. Ever. His ban is enough punishment. And I don't want to be the guy to add insult to injury. Very unpacker of me. Go pack go.

I've been distracted at work by two things all morning...(1) On a short week, in a west coast road game, we beat up the 49ers. I don't care that we weren't as efficient as usual. That's a HUGE win and one that we probably don't get the past few years (2) OMG on the front 7!!! Dare I say it...all these year 2,3,4 guys are all stepping up at the same time??? Raji is the old Raji?? Our defense might actually be...really good??? REALLY big one vs the Rams this week. When I saw the schedule a few months ago this is the one that scared me as the trap game. Pretty exciting times in Packerland. Go Pack!

I agree with you AiA, the Rams game was one I circled. This should be a tough opponent, and scouting report must be long. Fisher has young guys with lots of interchangeability, not unlike McCarthy. Seems they have similar styles of coaching in many ways.
I think this game determines how good the packer D has progressed. I like the speed at ILB, and the mentality on packer D this year, but I'm waiting for a quality opponent Oline before we get too excited. Really looking forward to the Rams game, and I hope MM prepares for Rams to sling it to some great speedy receivers.
