My One and Only Packers 53-man Roster Prediction

My annual one and only stab at a Packers roster prediction right after the final preseason game.

QB: 2

Rodgers, Hundley

RB: 4

Lacy, Starks, Burks, Ripper

TE: 3

Cook, Rodgers, Perillo

OL: 9

Tretter, Sitton, Lang, Bulaga, Bakhtiari, Spriggs, Barclay, Murphy, Taylor

WR: 7

Nelson, Cobb, Adams, Montgomery, Abbrederis, Janis, Allison

DL: 5

Daniels, Guion, Lowry, Clark, Ringo

ILB: 4

Barrington, Martinez, Ryan, Bradford

OLB: 5

Matthews, Peppers, Jones, Perry, Fackrell,

CB: 6

Shields, Randall, Rollins, Gunter, Hawkins, Daniel

S: 5

Burnett, Clinton-Dix, Hyde, Banjo, Brice

K: 3

Crosby, Schum, Lovato

Practice Squad:

Callahan, Gilbert, Evans, Deloreant, Patrick, Ross, Price, Brown, Kuder

PUP:

Linsley

IR:

Davis, Crockett, Backman, Flores, Henry, Walker

Suspended:

Pennel, Goodson

Agonizing decisions:

Carl Bradford or Joe Thomas: Went back and forth several times. Finally decided Thomas' main value is in coverage but now they have Martinez to handle that, so Bradford gives them some added versatility. Plus Thomas is now injured, so that helps the decision.

Wide receiver: I know the odds are great that the Packers will not keep seven wide receivers, but I just can't let go of my camp crush, Geronimo Allison. At one point I was sure Janis would be IR'd but talked myself down from that craziness. However, Davis conveniently gets injured to be put on IR (conspiracy theory anyone?) That leaves Allison as WR #7 and I'm spinning the roulette wheel and betting on double-zero.

Joe Callahan: The guy got so much work this preseason and you could see the improvement game to game. He certainly opened a few eyes around the league. I have a wishful PS spot for him, but maybe a team comes calling and Ted extracts a draft pick for the guy.

my 53 would be very similar to yours. Mine is contingent on assuming players are healthy.

QB: 2
Rodgers, Hundley

RB: 4
Lacy, Starks, Burks, Ripkowski

TE: 3
Cook, Rodgers, Perillo

WR: 6
Nelson, Cobb, Abbrederis, Adams, Montgomery, Janis

OL: 9
Bakhtiari, Sitton, Tretter, Lang, Bulaga, Spriggs, Taylor, Barclay, Murphy

DL: 5
Daniels, Guion, Clark, Lowry, Price or sign a FA?

OLB: 6
Mathews, Peppers, Perry, Jones, Elliott, Fackrell

ILB: 5
Martinez, Barrington, Ryan, Thomas, Bradford

CB: 5
Shields, Randall, Rollins, Gunter, Hawkins

Hyde: 1
(this position is tribute to the writer who had the Hyde position a while back)
Hyde

S: 4
Clinton-Dix, Burnett, Brice, Banjo (if healthy) or Evans

ST: 3
Crosby, Schum?, Long snapper?

I was going with 7 WR's but with the injury to Davis, i think they go with 6, and put Allison on PS.

The tough decisions for me were at WR, DL, LB, and DB.

Al - I pretty much agree with your 53. I hope that you are correct and they keep 7 WRs including Allison. If there are any changes to the final I expect they will be minor. I'd be fine with the Packers gong into the season with your 53. Thanks, Since '61

I think there is going to be some manipulation with short term roster moves to protect some players while cutting and resigning others, in order to move players onto the in-season IR. I could see Davis, Elliott, & Dorleant as such players. I also am not ruling out a trade. Last point on this issue, I could see TT moving Murphy & Daniel to the PS to protect the players above or place someone like Callahan, Allison, and/or Evans on the roster, then inactivate them. If Davis has a separated shoulder, he is likely out for 4-8 weeks.

I too really like Al's roster. Regarding the linebackers: If Thomas can play soon, I would have him on the roster. If Martinez goes down with an injury, we are back to the same issue we had last year, having to resign Thomas. AND remember, Thomas played OLB in the past. Bradford appears to me as a one-dimensional player (though probably the 2nd best tackling ILB in my mind). As such, Bradford moves to the PS and is back on the roster later in the year when an injury ensues on the team. I also have Allison on the PS and Callahan on the roster. Hundley's injury makes me uncomfortable, and I would not risk Callahan on the PS currently. Callahan moves to the PS when Hundley is completely healthy.

Murphy did himself no favors last night, at all. I thought he was worth keeping on the 53 a couple of games ago. I wouldn't be shocked if he was on the PS now.

Like IT. I Still believe in Davis. (Speed Rules) But Allison is OK for now. Bradford or Thomas. What was so hard. Thomas sucks and they will be going with Burnett on passing downs. I really think Mathews jumps back in the middle yet too. So I don't see Bradford long term either.

Hopefully under this scenario Barclay gets cut when Lindsley gets off PUP.

I wouldn't be mad at that at all, Al.

I still don't see the need for a 7th WR though.

Admittedly, the only need is for me to get Geronimo on the roster.

I think he'd most definitely be WR6 if the coaches decide to IR Janis.

I wonder how confident the coaches are in their other options at Gunners. Do they rush Janis back for that duty only (because he's still a WR project)? Or do they allow someone else take a stab at it?

Crockett's name was in blue on the NFL site. That means he was put in IR, not cut.

Things I'd change from your roster, that TT won't:

- Cut Ringo loose. Hasn't shown enough.

- Keep Brian Price. Raw? Yes. But he's a BEAST.

- Need to find room for Pennel to return after week 4.

- I would find that room bycutting loose one of the bottom CB's. Hyde can play CB in a pinch, and I think Kentrell Brice has the athleticism and talent to be cross trained at CB as well.

Burks is out and a waiver wire pick up is in. Any RB from Tenn like Cobb or Sankey would do. How about McCluster from KC of DJ Foster from NE? Even Dujaun Harris might be available from SF...at least he knows our system. TT dropped the ball on RB depth this past draft especially with Lacy in his 4th year. Instead of Davis in Round 5 shoulda coulda been a running back.
