Mulumba Taken Second Overall in Canadian League Draft

Andy Mulumba was selected in the first round, second overall, by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Monday's CFL Draft.

Defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid Andy Mulumba was taken with the first round draft choice, second overall, of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Monday's Canadian Football League Draft.

Mulumba was reportedly signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Michigan University.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Mulumba was obviously one of Canada's more highly-regarded players, but his selection in the CFL Draft likely won't impact his signing with the Packers.

If past history is any indicator, Mulumba will make every effort to make the Packers' roster and will happily accept a job, even as backup, rather than as a starter in the CFL. The type of money and prestige Mulumba will find in the NFL far outweighs what the CFL can offer.

The Blue Bombers will retain his rights, so even if he gets cut by the Packers, Mulumba can always return to the Canadian league as a fallback option.

There was risk, however, in the Blue Bombers taking Mulumba so highly in Monday's draft. With the CFL season beginning in June, they'll likely be without the defensive end's services at least through August (if not longer), assuming Mulumba stays on the roster through training camp.

Mulumba finds himself in a good position at one of the thinner positions on the Packers roster. Likely to make the transition from defensive line to outside linebacker in the Packers' 3-4 scheme, the only three players with any NFL experience at the position are Clay Matthews, Nick Perry and Dezman Moses.

With the Packers perhaps likely to keep at least four outside linebackers, Mulumba will be fighting with sixth round draft choice Nate Palmer of Illinois State for a berth on the team's roster.

The Packers do have quite a few inside linebackers with experience on the outside in Brad Jones, Robert Francois and Jamari Lattimore.

Mulumba made 73 tackles, seven for a loss, one sack, one forced fumble and seven quarterback hurries as a senior in college.

We'll find out if he can play, but what's interesting is that one of his best games came when he played across from Eric Fisher of Central Michigan who ended up being the No. 1 overall draft choice.

He is in the right place, the Packers give the UDFA's a legitimate shot to make the team every year, that does not appear to be the case elsewhere. It also says a lot about the quality of the coaching staff that a few make it every year.
