Mike McCarthy Shows Heightened Concern for Morgan Burnett's Injury

The Packers safety didn't practice for a second consecutive day on Thursday with a calf injury.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media on Thursday following practice. The following are select comments from his press conference:

  • On injuries to Datone Jones and James Starks: Datone was limited. James was probably in the same category. I had a better look at James than Datone, but I thought James looked pretty good.
  • On why the team is practicing outside before a game inside a dome: It's better to be outside. It's better to train outside. We'll be ready for the field turf.  It's better to train on the grass. It's better for your joints. I would go grass over field turf. ... We actually anticipated on being inside, but we were able to beat the rain today.
  • On Saints head coach Sean Payton: I have a lot of respect for Sean. I always appreciated the way he viewed offensive football throughout his career. …. Obviously we were named head coaches the same year, so I have a great respect for him.
  • On Morgan Burnett's calf injury: My concern for Morgan is higher than it was yesterday. … We'll see if he can do anything Saturday.
  • On the depth at the safety position: We feel very good about our depth. I can't say enough about the way the guys stepped up last week. … Micah's done a lot of good things. Ha Ha had an excellent practice today. … Sean had the big stop on third down against Carolina last week.
  • On whether Burnett is having his best season: Probably. After seven games, I would agree with that.
  • On why Burnett is having his best season: Morgan's been healthy. He's a lot more confident with the scheme. The communication has been excellent.
  • On Ha Ha Clinton-Dix's readiness to play a full game: I think Ha Ha is ready to play a complete game.
  • On how the defensive line has performed with Jones out: I think the biggest thing on our defensive line, No. 1 we've done a good job with the rotation.
  • On Eddie Lacy: Eddie Lacy is easy to coach. He's very willing. I can't say enough about any time something comes up, his willingness to not let down his teammates is very high. … He's a joy to coach.
  • On Jimmy Graham: Jimmy Graham is a primary target in the Saints offense. …. He can also line up on the backside of a 3X1 and be a featured play …. Definitley a big part of their offense.
  • On whether Graham is a tight end or a wide receiver: I think he's a damn good football player.
  • On remembering Hurricane Katrina: When Katrina hit, I think like everybody, it's devastating. Living down there, obviously the people you had relationships with, you contact them.

This. We're over 9 years removed now... and it really has nothing to do with the game.

I really like our depth at safety this year. What a difference a year makes.

I hope Burnett can play but if he can't I am fine with Hyde, Clinton-Dix and Richardson play.

I am happy to see Datone Jones practicing again but to be honest, I would rather see him take the game off and have 2 more weeks to get healed up. The DL has played well the last couple of weeks, I think they can go one more game without Jones.

I agree with your sentiment, RC. It might be prudent to give Datone Jones time off. I do note that Datone is much better than Boyd at rushing the passer, and that we are playing a pass-happy team this week, and the game is far from a gimme. Whatever the decision is, I hope the training staff is at least errs on the side of caution.

It would be awesome if Jones could play this game, but I have a feeling he'll be back after the bye week. I wouldn't want him to play this week if there are any questions about his ankle anyways. A huge part of pass rushing is flexibility, and an ankle injury can take that away. This game is important, but we want Jones to be in his best form for the playoffs. It would be devastating if he came back and seriously hurt himself for the rest of the season.
