Mike McCarthy on Eddie Lacy: He's a Better Football Player This Year

The Packers head coach commented on his running back on Wednesday.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media on Wednesday in advance of this weekend's upcoming divisional round playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys.

The following are select comments from his press conference:

  • On Aaron Rodgers' calf injury: I plan on Aaron playing Sunday. Today's schedule was for him to stay exclusively in the training room. … We'll see what tomorrow brings. … It's day to day, but everything points in the direction of him playing.
  • On Rodgers' future status: Getting better. He's going through the rehab. There's a chance he might practice tomorrow. He's getting stronger.
  • On Rodgers' preparation despite lack of practice time: Aaron's totally in the game plan. He's taken all the reps in our walk-throughs, all the reps in our quick work. Mentally, he's on top of it.
  • On the emphasizing ball security: We definitely identify it. ... They do a great job in pursuit. .. We're working on it, we're conscious of it.
  • On practicing inside the Don Hutson center: It was 22 degrees inside, that's what we're looking at Sunday.
  • On if it was the coldest practice: I'm told it was an all-time Green Bay Packer record.
  • On teams preparing for cold weather: Frankly, I never really analyzed it. I think you refer to it as circumstances. It's a mindset, part of your training. … Usually dome team live in northern climates, so there's an opportunity to get outside.
  • On the Packers' passing game: I'd say it's a combination of both. If you look at the way the passing game is designed, the way to get the ball in the receiver's hands, particularly Jordy and Randall.
  • On gaining yards after the catch: We have a system on offense, how the defense plays really points us in the direction of how we're going to attack the defense. … Yards after the catch is a bonus.
  • On Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant: He's very physical, particulary in the bump and run. But his yards after the catch is a strength of his.
  • On the Cowboys run game: If you look at Dallas' offense, their ability to … you've got inside zone and outsize zone, wide zone. … it's a difficult scheme to prepare for.
  • On Rodgers' "relax" message early in the season: I think it was a good message.  That's his personality. … I think we're all in touch with that.
  • On Rodgers: I'm being honest as always. In my conversations with Aaron, he thinks he's playing. ... We feel confident in the direction he's going.
  • On Eddie Lacy: Eddie was injured at the end of the year. He played the last four or five games on a bad ankle. … He feels better. He's a better football player this year than last year. He's a complete three-down player. … I think he's definiltey in a better place this year than last year.
  • On the Cowboys' undefeated road record this season: As far as the Dallas Cowboys winning eight games on the road, that's exceptional. I don't think it happens very often.

What's funny is outsiders think lacy had a bad season compared to his rookie season, but it's been the complete opposite. We have witnessed the growth of lacy as he's as complete a running back in the league. His pass blocking is awesome, he is dangerous as a receiver out of the backfield and then obviously as tough a guy there is to tackle when he has the ball in his hands. I'm glad he's on our side!

Guys TT drafted the last two years that wouldn't be disappointments had they been drafted in the first round: Lacy, Bakhtiari,. , Linsley, Adams, Hyde. I remember when the Packers were so good they didn't need draft picks..... So seeing players like this develop is soo much fun
