Mike McCarthy: Datone Jones Ruled Out for Packers-Saints Game

Despite practicing earlier in the week, the Packers coach said his defensive lineman is not ready.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media on Friday for the final time before Sunday's game with the New Orleans Saints. Here are select comments from his press conference:

  • On what Morgan Burnett must do to play on Sunday: Just get out there and move around better. Mrogan was in here bright and early, going through some of the treatments, and going through the Friday routine.
  • On Burnett's calf injury: He's making progress. It's kind of a time-clock type thing, just what he's dealing with.
  • On Datone Jones being ruled out for the Saints game: Datone actually, he went for it yesterday. I appreciate him out there pushing through it. But watching the individual work with defensive line coach Mike Trgovac, you could see he's not ready. … He's not going to make it.
  • On facing Drew Brees: Drew Brees is a big challenge for our defense. We're excited for this opportunity. … Drew does a great job of getting in and out of the personnnel groups. … We've got to put pressure on him, get him off the spot, get to him. More importantly, we've got to tackle and throw.
  • On Brees being one of the league's better quarterbacks: He's definitely a premiere quarterback, no doubt about it.
  • On the advantages of Aaron Rodgers and Brees being entrenched at quarterback: Continuity at quarterback is very important, of most importance. The quarterback position is the most important in football. ... It gives you an opportunity to have continuity, cohesiveness. … It's about having the same message from as many different people as possible. When you have a great quarterback, who can deliver the message better than him?
  • On working with Rodgers for so long: You have an individual with you since the first day you implemented your program.
  • On Mike Daniels: I think Mike Daniels is exactly what you're looking for. He's a great teammate, love his energy. … He's had some big-time productive, individual performances. … I really like what Mike's done.
  • On Sean Richardson deserving more opportunities on defense: I think Sean Richardson A1 deserves opportunities. It would be nice to give him those opportunities, and those are conversations that have been going on for some time. … Yes, Sean deserves it, and we'll see if it happens.
  • On injuries compared to years past: Let's be real here, it's been a lot better standing up here talking about the injuries compared to prior years. That's the way it's supposed to be.
