Media rumblings regarding the Packers ahead of the 2024 free agency period

Let's get ready to rumble.

The NFL free agency period is finally here, and unlike last offseason, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers are expected to be in the mix. How aggressive they will be, though, remains to be seen. The legal tampering period begins Monday and the start of the new league year begins Wednesday at 4 pm EST, at which point free agent deals can become official. Below is what is being reported about the Packers’ free agency prospects.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday that “Green Bay is considered a threat in the safety market. It wouldn't be a shock if the Packers comb the Xavier McKinney and Kamren Curl markets, depending on the price point. Recently released safety Quandre Diggs could also be an option.”

McKinney, who played the first four years of his career with the New York Giants and was recruited by the Packers' defensive pass game coordinator Derrick Ansley while Ansley was at Alabama, is considered the top free agent safety and will likely draw many suitors. He set a career high last season in tackles with 116 and also recorded three interceptions. McKinney, under the direction of blitz-heavy defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, was not afraid of getting his nose dirty last season, either, as he was sent on a blitz 42 times, the most in his career. However, one knock on McKinney is his availability. While he played in all 17 games in 2021 and 2023, and played in every defensive snap last season, he only appeared in nine games in 2022 and six games in 2020, his rookie season. All told, the Alabama product, who is only 24 years old, finished the 2023 season with a Pro Football Focus grade of 87.8, the fourth-best grade among safeties. Spotrac estimates that McKinney’s market value is an average annual salary of $10.4 million, although I suspect the price of brick will exceed that figure.

Curl, who is likely best suited to play strong safety, was credited with 115 tackles last season, a career high, and according to Doug Farrar, “is your robber/rat all day long and can play credibly enough in the deep third to make the most of coverage switches.” In 603 coverage snaps last season, he only allowed three touchdown receptions, but he did allow a passer rating of 108.3 when targeted. Spotrac estimates that Curl’s market value is an average annual salary of $14.4 million.

Diggs, who played free safety for the Seattle Seahawks the last 4.5 seasons, was released by the team last week and played in every game each of the last four seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons in Seattle. According to Pro Football Reference, Diggs’ Approximate Value was 9 in 2020 and 2021 and 8 in 2022. However, it dipped to 4 last season, but he did set a career high in tackles (95). And while he had at least four interceptions in his first three full seasons with the Seahawks, he only had one in 2023.

Altogether, the free agent safety market is one with plenty of options, so it will be interesting whether Gutekunst double dips in free agency, similar to what they did at edge rusher/linebacker in 2019 with Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith, or whether they will sign a safety via free agency and draft one.

Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated wrote last week that “the expectation coming out of the Scouting Combine is the Packers are going to turn back the clock to 2019, when they signed Adrian Amos in free agency and used a first-round pick on Darnell Savage. The Packers might not draft a safety in the first round on April 25, but the general idea is the same by signing one early in free agency and picking one early in the draft.”

Sticking on the defensive side of the ball, Tom Silverstein reported Sunday that the team will cut linebacker De’Vondre Campbell on Wednesday. “By waiting until Wednesday, they can put a June 1 designation on his release and gain a larger chunk of salary cap room than if they cut him right away.” The move will create $10.57 million in salary cap relief. It is important to note that designating Campbell as a June 1 release does not provide salary cap relief to the Packers for their free agency endeavors as the new league year begins. Rather, “[i]t simply gives the team more cap room to use during the rookie signing period and to function when cap accounting expands from 51 players in the offseason to the full roster during the season,” as noted in this Over The Cap article

Silverstein also reported that Green Bay wants to re-sign cornerback/returner Keisean Nixon.

On the other side of the ball, NBC Sports’ Matthew Berry reported that the Packers are not expected to re-sign running back A.J. Dillon and, instead, “will likely draft a RB early on Day 3, but Emmanuel Wilson will get a shot at a real role behind [Aaron] Jones. They like him.” Wilson was the darling of the preseason, leading the league in rushing yards (223) on 38 attempts, but only saw action in seven contests during the regular season. He finished his rookie campaign with 14 attempts for 85 yards (6.1 yards per attempt).

Berry also reported that the Packers are likely to release All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari, who has started only 13 games over the last three seasons and has a cap hit of $40 million for the 2024 league year. And that was confirmed by No. 69 himself in an Instagram post on Monday. The move will create $20.935 million in salary cap space but will leave the team with a $19 million dead cap hit.

And finally, ESPN's Rob Demovsky reported Monday that the Packers have re-signed tight end and special teams ace Tyler Davis, who tore his ACL in the 2023 preseason and is "expected to be ready for the start of training camp, if not sooner."

All these guys have similar profile till it comes to age. Try to stick with the youngsters if there's a chance.

Not surprisingly, I'm still not understanding the cap ramifications of Campbell's release. It doesn't count as relief except for signing the draft??? I'm sure someone here can walk me through this, if they would? I feal like a second grader again (for the third time).

A June-1designation allows you to split the dead money hit over two seasons (2024 and 2025), but the cap space does not become available until June 1. This way the team gets breathing room, but the player is eligible to test the market right away and get a chance for more $$ in his contract.

The Packers get added cap space later, but will still be on the hook for some of Campbell's money next year. By using this designation, the Packers can spend closer to the cap now and know they're getting a bolus of cash in June--possibly to help pay rookies or to use on extensions.

Thanks, dobber. It sort of makes sense, I guess. Are we ever going to be cap rich? Maybe it doesn't really matter, with all the loopholes and shuffling around they do.

We look healthier in 2025, depending on what they do with extensions and signings, due to old cap hangovers slowly working out. Bakh’s goodbye message this morning signals another chunk. But Love will eat some after his extension, perhaps Jones, if he is willing to agree.

A big upgrade over Dillon for 1. He runs hard and hits the hole...doesn't stop cold. We are is super bowl mode now. Hopefully Jones takes a cut and get's a ring. It's a pretty good tandem and He's 26. Rooks come on slow pass blocking, usually. We will more than likely draft a RB also. Looking for a good FS pick-up now...Hopefully.

Jacobs had a very similar year to Dillon last year, in terms of YPC and health. He was of course much better before. He would seem to increase leverage versus Jones, if the belief is that last year was a blip not a trend.

I suppose it depends on the terms how this is interpreted. A fresh start for Jacobs or paying high for a guy coming off a down season? A hoped for upgrade over Dillon or a sign we can’t agree with Jones?

Very true. I find myself thinking that paying a RB on day 1 is a tough sell given their other needs.

If you look at the "Love Window" of the next 4-5 years, Jacobs is going to be the guy lining next to Love, not Jones. I'm pretty sure that Jacobs is going to gain more yards and score more points over the next couple of years than Jones is.

Initial shock wearing off. This looks like a strong move, IMO.

Jacobs when healthy is a beast...just like Jones, key word is "healthy"...maybe jones comes back if no one pays him big...they probably also pick up a RB in later rounds of draft..

We No longer have to use a early draft choice on RB.

There is truth there, although I like Wright out of (Tenn). Jones was down for a good part of the season. This would help us keep our offense on track...and Jacobs is good at short yardage...Dawg type.

Now bring in one of the A.Jones clones in Rd three. I would still target two RBs in this draft. Not pinning my hopes on UDFAs and/or re-treads.

Wow that really looks like Jones is gone via trade or cut. I wonder what the cap hits for Jones are, and how much Jacobs is getting, $10 million was projected?

I guess GB is going to be a big player. The Eagles are supposed to be the main competition for McKinney.

I thought that maybe $20 million was the amount the Packers would spend in FA. Maybe $30 million?

My take is that Jones did not want to take a pay cut so the Packers will cut or trade him. I cannot see any team picking up his contract. If it is the case that Jones would not take a pay cut then I can see picking up Jacobs.

If Jones was willing to take a big enough pay cut then I would say we draft RBs.

Jacobs better work because Love needs a good run game.

If they cut Jones they will carry 12.4 mil in dead money and save 4.7 mil. They could designate him a 1 Jun cut and take the hit over two years.

Jacobs is younger by about 4 years so that is one good thing.

LH,
I have been under the impression (and hope) that one of these two is on Gutey's list and why he is letting Jones walk (that and the $$$$'s). The question is 'if' he wants one of them when will he select? Will it be with #41 (seems too high), or with #58, or if lucky at #88? You know once one of them is taken there will be a mad scramble by someone to snag the other one. As much as I'd like one of them I just cannot see passing up an OL and either Nubin at Safety or one of those top LB's with the first two selections.

We have the talent, we need better blocking and execution. But scoring TDs on six possessions is hard, at any level, unless your opponent is helping you by turning it over.

I'm not concerned that we're going to have a bunch of opponents going over 30 on us. We didn't have very many score that on us last year and we're going to be better this year, right?

dobber has quoted me correctly.....score 30 a game and you'll win most games. Even if your defense isn't very good. The top 7 scoring offenses in the NFC all made the playoffs. This is an offensive league, and if your offense can consistently finish drives and score points, you're going to be in the playoffs.

The Jones stuff surprises me, but they are actually going to let him test the market and see if he'd rather play elsewhere. Still, we've all noticed in the simulations that we kept getting chances at very good RBs, and the team has been touting Wilson. We're going to be drafting the guy that lines up in the backfield next to Love in some of of the biggest moments of his career over the next four years, and I don't think Jones was going to be that guy.

Aaron Jones was a great Packer. Maybe he will continue to be, but if Jacobs is on his way to Green Bay, who's the starter?

And that probability may have hardened Jones' position.

Dillion knew he was a the backup...never took over the starter role. I am certain Jones' still believes he's a featured back but with JJ, the Packers would now have two of them.

Hard business. But if you aren't trying to get better, you are likely going to be worse.

Will miss Jones! I wish he'd play with Jacobs.

Lambeau and LH you both are 100% right on. My pre-draft analysis has a lot of OL and LB in the draft with one Safety somewhere in the top couple of rounds. Fortunately, there is talent at OL and LB in the draft. Was vital they picked up a good RB and Safety in FA as it gives Gutey flexibility in the draft.

Thank God there is talent at the OL, because we're so damn close to Newman being on the field that it's making my beer taste bad.

AT LB,. It sounds like the Packers intend to make Quay Walker a centerpiece of their defense. It also makes me wonder if the Packers think McDuffie is part of the answer.

Then we've also got these holdovers from last year like Cox, who could be part of the solution. Still, it's looking more and more like we're going to need a guy. Maybe a FA guy.

There is a lot of talent for the OL, particularly with OT's early on. Depending on whether a top player at another position falls and is available at #25 I have a hard time seeing the Packers pass on one of them. It gets more difficult later in the draft to match up talent with the pick, which is another reason I believe it might end up being an OT in round one, or maybe an interior OL like Barton who from watching on tape is a mauler and great talent.

With the #41 I struggle seeing Gutey passing up Tyler Nubin at Safety if available but if he does it is hard not to believe he won't go for one of these linebackers....Edgerrin Cooper, Jeremiah Trotter Jr, or Payton Wilson. Tyler Nubin is 'everything' Gutey and the Packers are looking for in a Safety. He is a real ballhawk - a hard hitter and a good tackler. It's hard to pass him up if he is still available IMO. However, Gutey likes to mix it up and keep it fun so who knows!

I also believe with two picks in round 3 should the draft fall the right way that Gutey has to have his eye on the Aaron Jones replacement/upgrade. Guys like Jonathan Brooks or Tyler Benson. Always about how the draft falls and who might be available but I sure would like to see one of these guys in the backfield.
