McCarthy Acknowledges Perry's Right-Side Rushing Prowess

Yet another item coming out of the NFL's Owners Meeting in Orlando on Wednesday, was Mike McCarthy's comments on outside linebacker Nick Perry rushing from the right side of the field:

Clay Matthews has been the right outside linebacker for the better part of the past three seasons, but there will probably be some shake-up with Julius Peppers also coming on board in 2014.

I like that McCarthy seems to be recognizing a lot of things us fans have been saying for a while - Hyde makes sense at safety, Perry needs to rush from the right, Raji needs to be NT, etc...

EDIT: On second thought, most of us fans are idiots....so...maybe this isn't the greatest news.

For the most part though, the 'smart' fans have been saying this for a while.
Sounds like McCarthy is finally going to make sure that a player is used to their strengths.
Perry on the right side, Raji at NT...

I know you, me and Evan have all stated those things. I know there were others, but I remember us 3 have stated it more then a few times.

Lots and lots of people have been saying all those things about each of those guys since they were drafted. Heck, even before they were drafted.

That the Packers haven't recognized those things is a point to their discredit, IMO. And one of the prime reasons I have been advocating a re-vamp of the defensive coaching staff. They keep lining their guys up in spots that don't utilize the talent they have in the best possible way. Tailoring your approach to the talent you have is Coaching 101. For the last few years, the Packers defensive staff has been stuck at the remedial level.

Has anyone ever seen Stroh and McCarthy in the same place before? Could be we've identified MM "internet handle." He's on here trying to figure out what he needs to do to get the team back on the field!
Your coaching of the 2010 season was masterful, "Stroh."

Peppers and Perry rushing off the right, Mathews and Daniels off the left? Sounds pretty good to me.

I really like the versatility that Neal brings. Honestly I really like the versatility that Neal, Jones, and Peppers brings.

I really hope we see the Pscycho again. Having any combination of Mathews, Peppers, Daniels, Perry, Jones, Neal and maybe Raji on the field standing, you have no idea where the rush is coming from.

Tom B. I like the idea of Mathews at 1 DE, & Peppers at the other DE. Am I wrong there?

Also, IMO, both Peppers & Allen are or were Great Players. Who is the better of the 2. Why did GB choose Peppers over Allen? They both signed for about the same money per year. Apparently Seattle passed on Allen for some reason? Was it money?? Just curious. LVT

Ok, that makes sense, but why do we want the versatility? I was thinking we were going to have to good DE's. I'm probably wrong, but I'd like to see Peppers & Mathews rushing from the outside. You know my opinion of AJ HAWK. I'd like to find new ILB's. I personally think we need 2 consistant DE's like when we had Reggie & Sean. I don't really get this elephant thing. LVT

You're right, LV-Tom, Allen and Peppers did sign for about the same $ per year, but Allen got $15.5 guaranteed whereas Peppers only got $7.5 million. I usually look at guaranteed money to assess a contract, but here, I think it's likely that Allen commanded more guaranteed money simply because he is about 3 years younger than Peppers, rather than one being a better player for the upcoming season. They do seem to be different players that fit different systems. BTW, the other replies to your questions are interesting and seem thoughtful and well reasoned to me, so thanks to those who responded to LV-Tom.

Thegreatreynoldo, Just saw this post. Thanks for the Nice Reply. I always appreciate when someone reply's respectfully to one of my posts. I agree with you on the guaranteed money. I didn't know Allen was 3 yr's younger. I hope Peppers has at least 2 good yr's in him, & that we don't have to go looking next yr again. "The greatreynoldo" I LIKE THAT!!

I wonder if players let position coaches know how they feel about certain situations. I wonder if coaches listen to players' (not named Rodgers) input.

They moved Raji because he is younger and faster than Pickett.

Raji is a good penetrating NT type player whereas PIckett was much better at taking on double teams and 2 gapping. Capers loves 2 gappers, that's why he went with Pickett over Raji at NT.

McCarthy for all his flaws does tend to deliver on his points of emphasis and I for one am glad hes finally asserting himself on the defensive side of the ball. Not sure why it took so long but better late than never.

He hasn't been able to replace Collins or Bishop. Plus injured draft picks doesn't help. The Packers front 7 were a mash unit.

Yeah, a lot of people talk about Collins and Jenkins, but the loss of Bishop really hurt. He was so good and they haven't had the same type of production since.

This is a huge offseason for Worthy. His first full offseason with the team. If he can come in and elevate his game, it would be a huge help to the defense.

I think confidence is the biggest factor in any young players success, sometimes it takes a while to adjust to the speed of the game and things like that but mostly its about players having confidence in what they're doing on the field.

The Packers don't seem to know this or they don't seem to care. They play musical chairs on the offensive line, they draft guys at one position and play them at another. They take these guys completely out of their comfort zone as players, like the transition to the NFL isn't hard enough already.

I think if you want a guy to play well right away you do everything you can to foster their confidence, have them do the things they are comfortable with first then ease the transition to a new position if that is the plan.

Lets hope this revelation McCarthy has had about the defense sticks.. What a novel concept "Play to your players strengths" Gee why didn't I think of that...

Good point and that's why Capers defense isn't suited for this team, a team that relies on rookies to contribute every year and with so many injuries over the last few years its made it even more difficult to plug and play new guys.

Maybe McCarthy will finally force him to dumb it down a little bit or simplify it if you will.

Congratulations Stroh! (This is not sarcasm - you HAVE been suggesting this for at least a year). Maybe with Perry rushing from CM's position, we could slide CM into the middle for a few snaps per game in appropriate situations, getting our best pass rushers into the game.

Neal, Daniels, Peppers, Perry in the front 4, with Hawk and Mathews in the middle. I like that look in some packages. Especially against mobile QB's.

I like it. Moving parts creates confusion. Confusion leads to offenses unsure of themselves. Which leads to breakdowns in protections, which means timing is off with WR's, which causing turnovers.

I'm going to set my goals high, but I think Packers could lead the league or at least be a top 5 team in turnovers on defense this year.

On the flip side, it sounds like it's making an already complex defense even more so.

I like the idea of versatility and a hybrid defense, but it does run the risk of causing confusion on our side of the ball too.

Yeah, I can see that possibly being a problem.
But where has most of the confusion been? From my understanding most of it has been with the DB's.

I don't know if moving the front 7 players around a lot will impact the DB's.

But also when I say moving front 7 around, I mean guys lining up in different spots. Spots those guys have played before. Perry at ROLB, Mathews at ILB, LOLB, ROLB, Peppers playing the 3, 5, 7 technique spots. Neal playing OLB and DE.

I don't know how much confusion they would create for themselves by doing this.
