Lee Remmel, Packers PR Great, Passes Away

Remmel had been involved with the team in some capacity for just over 62 years.

Sad news from the Green Bay Press Gazette

Lee Remmel, a former Green Bay Press-Gazette reporter whose 62-year relationship with the Green Bay Packers is the longest in team history, died Thursday. He was 90.

Remmel covered the Packers for the Press-Gazette from 1945 to 1974, when the organization hired him to lead its public relations and publicity efforts. He held that position for 30 years until he was named team historian in 2004.

Remmel covered the first two Super Bowls, both won by the Packers, and attended every succeeding Super Bowl until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2007, a career that spanned all 14 head coaches in Packers history. He also attended 122 consecutive Packers-Bears games.

I had the distinct honor of meeting Mr. Remmel several years ago at a dinner where he regaled us with great stories of Lombardi's team.

But what I'll remember Remmel for the most is the local Sunday morning pregame show he appeared on every week. The camera would just go around the newsroom and ask for picks of the game happening later that day. (The Packers rarely appeared on Monday night back then.) Most of the people interviewed for the segement would try to give an honest appraisal of the Packers chances which, back in the late 70s and early 80s, were rarely good.

But at some point every week they would get a camera in front of Lee.

As I remember it, he always picked the Packers.

Rest in peace.
