Kerry Rhodes Says Four Teams Are Interested in Him

In an interview Friday on SiriusXM satellite radio, free agent safety Kerry Rhodes said four teams are interested in signing him.

While he declined to specify any teams, it's perhaps possible that the Green Bay Packers could be among them considering the lack of depth at the safety position.

At 30 years old (31 in August) and entering what would be his ninth season in the NFL, Rhodes is not a highly-sought commodity. But as someone who was a former All-Pro back in 2006 and intercepted four balls last season as a member of the Arizona Cardinals, there may be another solid season or two left in him.

Rhodes also said he's not opposed to signing a one-year deal.

With very few experienced players at the position beyond Morgan Burnett, Rhodes would add veteran depth and an insurance policy if nothing else.

Should the Packers experience even one injury at safety to any player, they might be glad they have a player like Rhodes in reserve, especially if Sean Richardson is not ready to come back from offseason neck surgery.

The Packers currently have six safeties on their 90-man offseason roster, but only 89 are filled after releasing linebacker Desmond Bishop last month.

It's also noting that the Packers have not signed any players as free agents following this past Thursday's supplemental draft, including Damond Smith, whom they reportedly offered a tryout at their rookie orientation camp.

For some reason I think they might actually sign this guy.

I can't see TT signing a safety who is going to be 31 unless Richardson is still hurt. Even then, they'd probably just use Bush more and try to find a young guy to develop.

I don't see it unless it becomes an emergency situation. Maybe like Benson last year. If Richardson can't get back on the field and another safety is injured in training camp then by all means bring him in for a look.

I live in Phx and watch all the Cards games beside the Pack. Not a fan of Rhodes. He thinks he's a lot better than he really is. If AZ is moving one w/o Rhodes (and w/o Adrian Wilson too) and starting 2 new Safeties, it certainly doesn't say much for Rhodes abilities.

Completely pass unless its an emergency. Just another case of a name player looking FAR more attractive than he really is to the uninformed!

Put all of your issues with me away for a second and honestly answer this one question...

Are McMillian and Jennings both better than Rhodes?
I'm not including Richardson at this time because of his injury situation.

You seem to have watched Rhodes quite a bit.
I will trust your judgement.
But I'll be honest - I'm scared to death of the idea that either McMillian or Jennings is going to be a STARTER. They really haven't done anything. I'm not looking for a game changer back there. Just need someone who knows what the hell he's doing.

Come on Cow ... He watches him on TV (every once in awhile). Hard to analyze most players through the boob-tube.

Here's something a little more factual.

http://www.nfl.com/player/kerryrhodes/2506460/profile

Check out his numbers. Also a few vids. ... He'd be a starter in GB.

Numbers don't mean squat. He's terrible and AZ, You know the AZ Cards that are looking for 2, countem 2, new starters couldn't wait to be rid of him!

Another name player that can't play anymore.

His contract wasn't up and they still released him. This is the AZ Cards, not even a playoff team. And they didn't want him anymore, even tho Adrian Wilson isn't going to be there and they need safeties worse than the Packers!

If he was any good, why would he still be a FA after being released in March? He's not a lockerroom cancer, not a bad attitude. No reason for him not to be on a team if he was any good. None...

A few more facts.

Rhodes was a cap casualty. Happens all the time.

http://www.revengeofthebirds.com/2013/3/13/4100640/nfl-free-agency-2013-...

"Many believed that the Cardinals were going to try to extend Rhodes and it was reported by Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 that the Cards were negotiating a two-year deal with him a couple of months back."

I would rather have either McMillan or Jennings playing than Rhodes. He done and was never that good to begin with. Despite his size he's soft and he lacks the ability to be a good Safety! I would MUCH rather have either of the young guys and live w/ a few mistakes than try to force Rhodes into a scheme that doesn't fit him. He big, slow and lacks instincts. Been watching him for the past 4 years. He poor in coverage and isn't going to help Burnett. Capers wants interchangeable safeties and Rhodes doesn't fit.

If you want him that's up to you, but I can virtually guarantee he wouldn't start ahead of Jennings or McMillan and if he did see the field you would be complaining about how terrible he is!

Oh, you may be right. Thompson may not have any interest in him. .. However, you can be assured that Thompson bases his decision on the facts. ... You see Stroh, believe this or not ... You & I have nothing to do with who plays football for the GB Packers.

I simply pointed out that Thompson would have no interest in him.

I'm actually with Cow42 on this. I started a Forum on Packer Report, "Should Packers sigh a veteran WR or Safety, mentioning Rhodes as the specific target. Results were mixed but mostonly if a injury happens. I'm just not very thrilled with McMillian or Jennings, and we really have no idea what we really have in Richardson. Someone is going to sign Rhodes soon, a week after camp starts at least. I can already see TT plan to carry over whatever cap space he has this year to next to help sign as many Packer FA as he can. I have to believe that Rhodes won't cost much and it would be a hell of a lot better to have him than suffer a injury and be caught short.

GB's defense isn't good enough to ignore another position of weakness (45 pts./579 yds./323 rushing). ... Bring him in.

Burnett might actually be worth his impending big contract if he had a better playing partner.

From ProFootballFocus:

"Despite being our fourth-highest-graded safety in 2012, Rhodes was cast aside during the Cardinals’ secondary makeover. He particularly shined in coverage, where he notched six passes defensed and allowed just a 64.5 quarterback rating on throws into his coverage. He also picked off 4 passes, one off his career high."

Sounds like he would have batted the ball down in the endzone instead of trying for a needless pick ala MD Jennings.

GB management is well aware of what Rhodes has to offer and what $ it would take to acquire him. Let's see what happens.

I don't think he'd be as costly as you think. At this point, almost to training camp, I think he could be had for a fairly cheap 1 year deal.

I don't think he was implying it would be expensive to sign him. Just that Packers probably know what it would cost.

Rhodes would be a major asset for a team that is inexperienced and thin at the safety position. He might just be a band-aid for a season but you need someone to help stop the bleeding. You can't have major deficiencies in the center of your defense ILB and Safety and expect to have good results. I don't think you can wait until training camp to sign him, Rhodes will be with another team before then. Since TT believes so much in youth over experience maybe it's time for him to retire and let a young GM see what he can build with Rodgers as his QB.

If you don't want a major deficiency in the middle, don't put Rhodes at Safety. A team worse off at Safety just released him. Tells you all you need to know!

After reading all of the above, sign Rhodes now! Rhodes was obviously a cap problem for the Cards. That's not unusual. Looks like he played pretty good last season. Jennings, McMillan, Richardson, whoever, none excite me any.

rat farts!

oh well... LET'S GO MCMILLIAN! GRAB A HOLD OF THAT JOB AND RUN WITH IT!

in my opinion - it's a bad sign if there's any sort of competition at all for that position. i think McMillian has a chance... but if he can't CLEARLY beat out Jennings, then we may have issues... because I think Jennings is nothing more than a 3rd safety on any team. Just not strong enough. He has to work too hard to put on weight. can't hold it naturally.

Sounds like TT. As a general rule he seems to skip the whole "veteran insurance policy"thing.

If the price is low and he will sign a one year deal, Rhodes could at least provide backup at both safety positions if Burnett were injured or Jennings/McMillon fail to progress, compare that to Bush as the backup. It is interesting to note that both Bigby and Peprah both started (Chargers - Cowboys)after being discarded by the Packers, one obviously was injury prone and the other limited in ability but it is interesting to note. Richardson son "looks" like the guy you want if he is healthy, time will tell, Crabree "looked like a great run blocker" but PFF had him near the botton.
