Jim Leonhard on Packers: We Aren't Close on a Deal

Even though discussions have taken place, free agent safety and Wisconsin native Jim Leonhard and the Green Bay Packers aren't close on a deal, Leonhard told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday.

Host Alex Marvez and the station's official Twitter account provided the following commentary on Leonhard and Packers:

not surprised at all. I don't think Leonhard has much left and I think he wants to be in GB way more than then GB wants him

Not surprised either. Figured that all along.

Wouldn't surprise me if the only talks Leonhard had w/ the Packers was when his agent called to beg for a look in training camp. I just don't see him as a player the Packers would be looking at bringing in, except for some really extenuating circumstances. Like both Hyde and Clinton-Dix looking lost and an injury to Burnett. He would be an emergency starter for the Packers, not even a backup. They would get a young developmental player as a backup.

I don't care who called who, I think it would be a good move to bring the guy in for TC. Its a low risk low cost insurance policy in case of injury or lack of performance by the presumed starters.

The guy played in all 16 games for Buffalo last year starting 6 times and made 41 tackles and 6 pass breakups and 4 INTs. That's 4 more interceptions than all of GBs safeties combined last year. So don't say he doesn't have anything to offer, that's BS.

The fact is, none of us have seen Hyde or Clinton-Dix play a single snap at Safety for this defense with Pads on. They are complete question marks at this point as is every other safety on the team except maybe Burnett.

Adding a guy like Leonard does 2 things, increases the competition for starting jobs at safety and gives the team a good barometer to measure the progress of the young guys against. If they can't beat out Leonard than should they really be starting?

All bringing in a guy like Leonhard at the start of training camp is taking away important snaps from guys like Hyde and Clinton-Dix. If the position is looking grim heading into the regular season, then a guy like Leonhard can be brought in. Then again if you would have told me that Peppers was going to be a Packer after being cut by Chicago and I would have laughed so you never know I guess
