Is playoff contention really that far-fetched for Packers in 2023?

Many NFL fans believe that the Packers will not be good next season. I believe there's no reason Green Bay can't be in playoff contention come January.

If anyone else is keeping track, there are less than two weeks until the Green Bay Packers report for training camp.

We are inching closer to another NFL season, baby.

The new look-New York Jets already reported for camp on Tuesday... It still feels weird to see Aaron Rodgers in a different uniform, I must say.

While football activities are starting to ramp up for teams and players around the league, so too are the hot takes that always arise before the start of every year.

And one that caught my attention earlier this week? ESPN's Dan Orlovsky, when asked if Jordan Love can lead the Packers to the playoffs this season, stated that he believes if Love is average, the Packers will be in the hunt for the playoffs in 2023.

To me, that wasn't much of a hot take. I've believed that all offseason.

To everyone else that isn't a Packers fan... apparently that was an off-the-walls statement.

"You drinking something Dan?" One user replied.

"Much more likely the Packers challenge for worst in the division," another stated.

I guess I shouldn't be shocked that so many believe the Packers will be bad this season. I mean, after all, Jordan Love rode the pine for a few years, Aaron Rodgers is gone, the Packers' receivers are unproven and the defense was average-at-best for the majority of the 2022 season.

But if we really take a deeper look at this team and the upcoming year, I don't think there's any reason why this team couldn't have a similar record to last year, if not better. Which, by the way, would mean the Packers would very much be in the playoff hunt come January.

Although there are definitely new pieces involved in the offense, specifically at the quarterback and pass-catcher positions, many of the same players from the 2021 team that went 13-4 are still on the roster. The talent is still very much there, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Many are quick to forget how much better the defense was playing during the winning stretch of games in the second half of the 2022 season. Which is a big reason why, ultimately, LaFleur decided to keep Joe Barry around for 2023. Barry *should* be able to coach his unit better to its strengths this fall.

The biggest question mark this season involves a certain quarterback and his unit of pass-catchers.

Aaron Rodgers is gone, there's no way Jordan Love can be as good as 12, right?

Wrong.

At least, Jordan Love can definitely be as good as 2022 Rodgers, I believe.

Rodgers, although easily a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer who had played at an MVP level up until last season, did not have that type of season in 2022. He posted his worst statistical season since his early years as starter with Green Bay, and added more drama to the Green Bay news-cycles than not.

Rodgers actually finished middle-of-the pack in many quarterback statistics, including 27th in QBR (39.3) and 18th in Yards/Game (217.4). It was a very average season for normal QB standards, and an incredibly poor one by his own.

I've stated in the past that Jordan Love shouldn't be held to Rodgers-like standards in his first season as face of the franchise. However, there's no reason why he couldn't be as good as 2022 Rodgers.

Let's talk about the pass-catchers. Gone are Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Robert Tonyan.

But did any of them jump off the page as top receivers last season?

Lazard only caught one more pass (60) than Aaron Jones did last season, and Christian Watson, in his rookie season, actually had more touchdown catches (7). Cobb was often an afterthought, while Tonyan looked nowhere near as explosive after his ACL injury.

This group of pass-catchers has way more upside than last year's.

Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs will be heavily relied upon this season, and I expect them to make a considerable jump in year two. The Packers also drafted three explosive pass-catchers on Day 2 of the NFL draft. Although unproven, Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft will be major additions for this offense.

The Packers haven't had a dominant pass-catcher at the tight end position for a very long time. Both Musgrave and Kraft have serious potential to fill into that type of role.

Yes, it won't always be sunshine and rainbows for the Packers this fall. I don't expect the squad to win the NFC North or post one of the best records in the NFC by any means.

But it shouldn't be that far-fetched to say that Green Bay will at least be in the playoff hunt this season.

Only time will tell. Go Pack Go!

Quick answer. If they stay reasonably healthy, if Love is at least a top 16 QB, and If Barry doesn't screw up the defense, they could be good.

If all of the above occur, they could REAL good!
Two of the three are pretty big ifs though.
I'd also throw in IF MLF improves in game adjustments and awareness as a large IF.
JB and MLF are my biggest concerns as health is always a wildcard.

Dbl,

I'll add another variable: IF our O line dominates at every position. If they get pushed off the ball and allow QB pressure? JL10 needs to do superstar things. I'm not saying he can't, it's just not the sort of first year starting we want to see. If they dominate? Everything just WORKS. And we've also seen that's where MLF shines. Even in that case I hope JL10 doesn't try threading the needle, and doesn't even take the time to look for open WRs at first; run heavy, target RBs and TEs for quick releases on short plays, and move the chains.

Once that's established as a threat and everybody's confident, THEN the deep ball becomes a viable option but I still don't want to see him trying to thread needles like we're so used to seeing from our last 2 QBs. MLF should be able to scheme guys open; can JL10 find them? It's ok that none of this is proven, that means an easy schedule and flying under the radar. Does this come together in the first half of week 1? Not until after the bye? I'm not too concerned about that, we all know they're going to be better late in the season, and better yet next year. 2025 truly contending for a Lombardi is my big hope, and following that up can redeem the last 30 years which we all feel had way too few SB appearances.

That's all possible without JL10 being much like #4 or AR12. Right now we can only speculate about how much of the talent to be able to do that is already in the building, and unfortunately our two headed monster in the backfield doesn't have another decade in their prime.

It'll be fun to see them show up to play on the first play of the season for a change. I don't think that's been the fault of the coaches, and this will be a real test of what the entire coaching staff has been up to all year.

GPG!

It's not far-fetched if:

Love stays totally healthy and plays reasonably well...Watson stays mostly healthy and is able make big plays and stretch the defense...Jones stays healthy...The TEs are fast learners...The defense, for once, plays close to their potential--all season long...The new kicker is reliable...Nixon stays healthy so he can man the slot (we're a little short on depth here)...Another receiver (like Reed) develops into a consistent chain-mover.

Lot of "ifs" here, but every other team in the division has them as well.

I think that far-fetched is a tad extreme as to making the playoffs, however, there is a lot that needs to go right to make the playoffs a real possibility.

I believe the win total of 7.5 is right on the mark, and how far from that mark on either side they fare depends on how well, and quickly things go right.

I would say 7-10 or 8-9 is very good possibility if Love plays like AR last year. Any worse than that and this team wins 6 games or less.

I just don't trust this defense or Barry.

That 2008 team was 1-7 in one-score games. That's a lot of tight games to go against you and was bound for some kind of regression to the mean....even though that defense got eaten from time to time, the signs were there that it was better than a 6-10 team.

I've been told, here, on this site, by Taryn, that it's ridiculous to think we'd be better than last year. Personally, I think we'll start 2023 with a better line than last year and our QB is going to play better and we're going to win the division.

LH, "we'll start 2023 with a better line than last year and our QB is going to play better and we're going to win the division."

Took the words right out of my...fingers????

I think the line will rival the one from 2020 if it stays healthy.

I was going to post something along those lines, but now I don't have to.

I'll add that it's farfetched to think that we can't contend for the division. I think that's also the easiest path to the playoffs.

Steve, I'm reasonably sure LH was being sarcastic with that last bit :)

Which of our players said "the sky's the limit?" I think that's really true of the talent currently on the roster. Can the entire coaching staff develop everybody to get the best out of them? Can they evaluate that talent to form not only the best final roster but the most effective packages for every situation?

Those are a LOT of variables! Yet that's true of every team, every year. It all starts in the trenches. Personally, it won't be easy for me to evaluate this and I'll be leaning on everybody here for help analyzing these details of our linemen. So far there's question marks all over the field yet I see talent in every conceivable way; measurables, intangibles, leadership, and experience. Even among the youts! Putting all that together into a winning record involves a huge number of variables including 14 other teams.

Speculation and hype is one thing, but there's a reason to actually play the games, lol. Everybody agrees this should be a fun season. The rest of the league might think so because they expect the Packers to be an easy win. I think differently :)

Thought LH was having fun with that comment as well, Steve! 100%. It is almost 1 week before TC starts. No one knows what this 2023 team will be with any certainty.

But, we are all fans. POVs vary widely. I have no problem accepting others’ perspectives on our team that vary from my own. In the same breath, my own perspective is mine, and I share to contribute to a broader perspective/collective as a lifelong fan. Nitschke being the best player I ever saw in green & gold.

Like you and many others, I think this Packers team will be better than 2022. By a wide margin, actually.

Too bad that the 2022 hurdle setting is so low.

Just start by having the right established and practiced lines and it's way ahead. You could even blame the 2022 O-line for the reason a thumb was hurt.

" I think this Packers team will be better than 2022. "

It will certainly be more interesting and hopefully less predictable. We'll have to see how that translates to W/L.

Having Bakh and Jenkins available and 100% to start this season should be a big plus over how 2022 started. If the OL can keep the pressure rate down on 10, he should stay healthy and have time to grow into the starting QB job. I'm not so sure that Musgrave won't be a step up from a Tonyan returning from ACL injury last year. They've got a legit threat at all three levels on the outside (Watson) and a versatile and effective runner (Jones). Health is the key, but if they haven't completely guessed wrong on Love (remember how they whiffed on Hundley?), and he plays decisively and protects the football, they should be able to score at a similar rate to a 2022 team with a decidedly average ARod.

Hopefully they'll start fast (or at least faster than the thumpings they took to open the last two seasons) to keep the negative pressure low...that creates a different kind of pressure, but I'll be happy to see that.

Truth.

And for this reason alone the Packers have a shot at the playoffs. Consider also a year's worth of experience for the young WRs, a TE with real potential, and a QB with two working thumbs, and they've got a better than average chance.

I actually think we have a pretty favorable early schedule. The Bears were the worst team in the league last year, we beat them in Chicago last year, and I think we've got a great opportunity to get a road win against a divisional opponent.

Then we go to Atlanta, and I'm going to be at that game. Atlanta was mediocre-ish last year and I'm not really seeing why they'd be better this year.

Then we have our home opener against New Orleans, and we stay home for the short week against Detroit. If we win that game, we should be no worse than tied for first place in the division by the end of September.

The Vikings open with three of their first seven games as tough ones: @Philly, KC, SF. Then, on a short week, they travel to GB on Week 8. I could easily see the Vikings 4-4. Detroit opens @ KC, and plays Seattle and Atlanta before the GB game. I could easily see them at 2-2, and maybe 4-3 at the bye.

At the moment, with all that needs to be seen, not hoped for, yes, it's ridiculous, but not far-fetched that camp can prove it not so.

I get it, 'hope' is the key for many, with 'if this, that and other things' running a close second, which ignores the reality in front of you. I play the reality game, not hope. Furthermore, I have to see the play in preseason, which will strengthen or weaken my reality at this time. I'm a betting person in Vegas, hope does not figure in my decisions. I let hope dictate my lottery numbers.

There is way too little real information on the Packers, and an exuberant amount of HOPE.
How does anyone know if MLF really has a 'Complexity of Illusion'. Has it truly been witnessed, had Rodgers buried it, or did Rodgers expose it as being an Illusion to itself. I don't know, but I expect to see the truth one way or another. There are many pressing questions that need answers, and why I can't ignore the more apt reality, at this time.

I don't diss people for their choice for optimism, I diss those who diss my choice of reality.

Reality has a better record.

You seem to think I don't want the Packers to win, I do, but I drive with eyes open, and don't wear goggles that blind, even if it's the fashion of fans.

I'm not sure I understand this:

"... it's ridiculous, but not far-fetched ...""

I'm lost. Something that is not even far-fetched is somehow ridiculous?

I'd also like some elaboration on this one:

"I play the reality game...."

Here is reality: It is a four team division and the Packers have won it about 15 times in 30 years, or as much as all the other teams combined.

Here's what the Packers bring: The division's best defense, by quite a lot. In our six games against our division opponents last year, we held these teams to 23 and 17 (Vikings), 16 and 20 (Detroit) and 19 and 10 (Chicago) to only 105 points...about a 16 point average.

Sometimes, reality is subjective......I think JA is the best corner in the division, and that he and Rasul and Stokes are probably the best 3 man group in the division. I think that Clark and Wyatt and Van Ness and Smith and Gary will be able to bring good pressure on the QB.

"How does anyone know if MLF really has a 'Complexity of Illusion'"

Well, I've seen the Packers be tricky on offense for the last couple of years. And I believe the term was "Illusion of Complexity", which would make more sense. People used to call them "gadget plays" when it was a run or a pass that was tricky. Rodgers was tricky, there's no denying that, but I've seen other teams with other players do tricky stuff, too.

We're going to see some tricky stuff, but at the end of the day, the play is going to Jones/Dillon about half the time. Two thirds of the offense will go through them and Watson. The plays will succeed if we push people around on the line, and I think we'll do that.

Ridiculous and far-fetched are different in the aspect of how each is being used. One is close to possible and the other is closer to an insane stretch. It's ridiculous to think GB will win the Division, still possible. The Packers will win the SB this season is far-fetched and has as much chance as Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber.

You define reality based on hopes and ifs, and what you want to see/expect to happen, not prior facts. The Offense has not been an MLF offense, as has been declared by you and others because of Rodgers. You, now, suppose to know what it is without ever really seeing it in total use, and claim it as a reality.

You said MLF did some tricky stuff. Every HC in the league, and in its history, has done some tricky stuff, but that didn't make it their scheme. MLF better have a huge bag of tricky stuff to offer as a 'Complexity of Illusion', because a couple just won't make the cut.

A few gadget plays does not an Offense make, because their use is limited to situations, and I would guess not in good ones for the team doing them, or when you want to rub it in the face of an opponent.

Taryn,

thank you for saying you bet on sports, that helps make sense of most of what you say. Certainly there's nothing proven of this team to place a bet on. Then again, I don't gamble. I think that platitude is true of nearly every game, and I recall quite a few upsets when everyone thought the result was a foregone conclusion.

I'm certainly not betting on a winning record this year, but neither am I betting against it. My main hope is to see our players doing their best, and then maybe we can make sense out of the abilities of our current coaches. That's a LOT to analyze!

The player talent is there on both offense and defense of this Packer team to make a run to the playoffs. The coaches will be the key to a winning season, especially the defense. Jordan Love has the skills to be better than average. And he wants to be here. Unlike Rodgers was the last few years. But it's not all about Jordan Love. The rest of the team has to pull together and play well. If they can accomplish that then I believe the Packers can not only make the playoffs, but win the division. The coaches need to do their part to make this team a success, especially on defense. Go! Pack! Go!

My only question is that so much of the player talent is completely unproven. Until Gary comes back, we have an unproven rookie and a couple of role players rushing the edge along with Preston Smith who is not on the rising end of his career. Kenny Clark, who has been underperforming, is joined by? Question mark Slaton and question mark Wyatt. Beyond them? Even less experience. The ILB underperformed last year as well and it's not certain they will bounce back.

The TE group? Completely unknown. Rookie TEs that have any kind of impact are in rarified air, leaving the not-too-exciting Deguara and roster bubble Davis as the experienced contributors. We think Watson and Doubs have the talent to be good, but they were both hampered by injuries last season and didn't face any defenses that specifically focused on stopping them. That will change this year. Beyond those two? Only question marks.

The QB is a huge question mark as well. Looks like he might have NFL talent, but we just don't know.

And you said "unlike Rodgers the last few years," based on what? You think handling a grueling 16 or 17 game season not including playoffs was easy? You think it didn't take hard work and the right attitude to lead a team to 13 wins a season 3 years in a row? Despite an underperforming defense? And last year? Way underperforming defense most of the year, a broken thumb, an offense led by an UDFA WR who had cracked the 500 yard/season once in his career? That's your number one? And an aging but cagey slot receiver who is injury prone. And then throw in some rookies. How about TE last year? Tonyan didn't even look like he could run. But let's throw shade on Aaron Rodgers b/c that makes us feel better.

I'd be pretty surprised if a wild card team comes out of the NFC North this year. Any team in the North that has play-off aspirations will have to win the division in my opinion.

I don't think it's far fetched at all to think that team could be the Green Bay Packers.

The answer to your question is simple, it's not too far fetched to think the Packers can make the playoffs.

First off, not many teams have Green Bay's Oline. They are for sure top ten, maybe top five
Second, their defense was 6th (not sure that's right but again top ten) against the pass and have key players 100% this year.
Third, Green Bay's ST has improved from 32 to probably top ten this year.

Those reasons alone are why Green Bay will/should be in every game this year even with Love at the helm. You might ask yourself "why has HB lost it because Love isn't anywhere close to AR". Well here's the thing, there are only three or four AR or equivalent talented QBs in the playoffs the rest can be rated from very good to game managers.
Even with Love only being as good as a game manager, then the Packers can still make the playoffs.
At least that is how I see it.

"First off, not many teams have Green Bay's Oline. They are for sure top ten, maybe top five"

It's one of the key reasons why we can hope that the offense won't take a step back with Love rather than ARod. With a little luck, some competition in camp will help galvanize the right side and they'll hit the ground running. They need to stay healthy, though, and we have to remember that this is the same coaching staff that thought they could get away with Hanson and Newman on the right side a year ago...

"Second, their defense was 6th (not sure that's right but again top ten) against the pass and have key players 100% this year."

The offense needs to be more proficient in the red zone...or better with chunk scoring plays. Putting more 7s on the board (and not settling for 3s) puts pressure on opposing teams to try to keep up--which forces them to make plays against the defensive strength of the Packers. If the safety position isn't at least capable, we might see some issues pop up, though.

The Packers were 4-5 in one-score games last season. Being a little better at converting in the red zone would've made this a playoff team a year ago.

"Third, Green Bay's ST has improved from 32 to probably top ten this year."

Just figure out how to protect on punts and kicks, force FCs or bring returners down regularly with the first man, and don't take dumb penalties.

The ST has improved to top ten exactly how? By losing the highest scoring player in the history of the Green Bay Packers? What are you basing your projection on?

Yes, GB was good against the pass, but teams didn't have to pass to beat them. They could just run all over them. Weren't they at the bottom of the barrel on run defense? And how is the passing defense going to hold up when the defensive line is such a question mark. We have no idea how Slaton or Wyatt will actually turn out. Plus pass rush is key, and we have Preston Smith, an unknown rookie and two depth guys to start the season. They would all have to play better than hoped to have a decent pass rush to help the secondary.

HB,

I agree that "game manager" is mostly all we need from JL10. I think he has the maturity to not fire his cannon every chance he gets just because he can, unlike Favre. I hope to see no throws into tight windows, and not even giving plays time to develop a deep threat until dink and dunk with quick releases is firmly established as a viable threat. Hopefully behind a dominant O line.

After all that? JL10's cannon for an arm combined with finding truly open receivers can join the mix, and even be subtle at first and sneaky.

Yeah it'll take a lot for all that to come together; it'll take a whole team. I see talent all over the field!

Ok - Gunner- Place your bet.
Thats why we have gambling.
Put your money where your mouth is.
IMO this is a rebuild.
I see major issues with the DL and Safeties yet.
And the only thing you want to believe;
is Love can replace Rodgers.
I once believed the packers could win without Starr.
But they didn't until they changed GMs.

My argument was closing the windows on other players.
Maybe Wolf taught TT more than we know.
At least TT drafted the right guys, to move on.

Well, guys, I really appreciate your efforts to keep delivering articles on daily bases. I know that is hard to find something fresh to write about, so, please, do not take this as criticism, just it looks to me that you are writing 100+ variation of the same theme and we are posting 100+ variations of out thoughts, ideas, expectations, hopes, predictions etc.

I think this become a kind of game - who will write better article and/or post.

Great piece, Gil. I like your positive take on much of this and agree.

First, team attitude has shifted to all for one, one for all mentality. HUGE. Cohesive, confident, supportive/respectful of each other, and bringing their best. The players seem lighter, happier, having fun like I haven’t seen since Jordy left. Along with that, they appear to be taking ownership of their responsibilities for the team good. They all actually seem like they like each other.

Love appears confident, mature beyond his years. We should have great protection up front, and top RBs to help carry the load. Possibly the most dynamic WRs we’ve seen 1-6 in years. Maybe EVER. Arguably 1-7, 1-8??? Plus 2 of the draft’s top TEs. Running 12 & 13 Personnel? Every Jet concept LaFleur can draw up? I like it. A lot of weapons, everywhere you look.

On D, I find the personnel changes encouraging. We’ll see. Love that pass rush. Love our DL. Biggest changes I see will be Nixon at Slot, Valentine maybe grabbing an outside starter spot and not letting go, and possibly a complete change out at Safety. That last one’s going to be a serious battle. Huge Tarvarius Moore fan here, and I think he’ll win one of those starting Safety positions. I like the Anthony Johnson Jr. pick too, and I’d love to see both win starting roles.

Vegas projects GB will have the 3rd easiest schedule, facing only 5 winning teams.

Double digit Wins. Playoffs. Shock the world.

It is beyond ridiculous to think the team attitude was not all for one under Rodgers. By all accounts he was a complete leader in the locker room. The rookie WR may not have been his best friends, but by god, he got production out of both of them until they went down with injuries. They did amazingly well, which plays so strongly against the meme that Rodgers doesn't "mentor" young players and is not a team player. He had high standards. That's what you want from your QB. That's what Brady demanded and he turned out to be pretty good.

I'll go with what Micah Hyde said recently about Rodgers even after being with BUF for a few years:

“I love 12. That’s my guy,” Hyde said. He added, “He’s a loving, great person. He’s one of the best teammates I ever had.”

West,

the main difference is AR12 did not like to practice and avoided it like the plague. Had he been like TB12, giving targets as many reps as they need, the past four seasons might have been very different.

A bunch of guys on our offense have put in the time to develop some chemistry. I can't believe that won't matter ...

That's the hidden benefit. Whan AR12 wasn't practicing, who was? Love got to work a bunch with all these guys last season from OTAs on.

It's not like we're going to a rookie this season. He'll be more established than Fields in Chicago with his offense.

There's nothing out there saying Rodgers did not like to practice. If he missed practice in 2022, it was because of the finger. His interviews were constantly discussing the intensity in practice and the focus on practice. You don't get MVP two years in a row if you "did not like to practice."

The only thing Rodgers did was choose to not attend the "Voluntary" off season activities in shorts and t-shirts at a time of the year when the rookies had just gotten their playbooks for the year. And it's hard to say a guy coming off an MVP of the entire freaking league should have to do the voluntary portion of off season activities. Heck he missed much of the off season stuff the previous year and still performed at a high enough level to win the league MVP. That tells me that a few days in shorts and t-shirts are not a difference maker. Yes he had more rookie receivers, but the bigger hit was Watson missing training camp, not Rodgers missing OTAs that he was not even required to attend.

And in spite of not attending OTAs, he made those two rookies have a great first season. The main limits to their production was both of them being hampered by injuries. Not to mention the QB's broken them.

How can you complain about the past 4 seasons when GB won 13 games in a row each of the seasons he didn't have a broken thumb? Rodgers has a better record than Brady's last 4 years, so that's not a factual argument that Brady throwing in practice made him better. I will never argue against the fact that Rodgers should have elevated his game in the playoffs, as Brady generally did.

But to argue he wasn't a team player or "all-in" or a good team mate is a slap in the face to all the seasons he saved us from mediocrity, elevating a team that was often devoid of top talent to the playoffs and to some playoff wins. Davante Adams was on of the few top tier receivers he ever played with. Anybody else did nothing when they weren't catching passes from him. Same with TEs. He played with a bunch of nobodies.

" I don't expect the squad to win the NFC North or post one of the best records in the NFC by any means."

I think 10 wins will take the NFCN this season...there just isn't a runaway club in the division.
That's attainable if things break well.

I agree with a lot of the posts I have read so far. It is very true; but the variables are very dynamic to me. (Example) Day 6 of training camp, major injury to a main player, these are all unknowns as of now, yet this scenario is a fixed NFL circumstance for every team, every year.

Health of the players, regression, progression, aging of players, the motivation/attitude of an individual player are the unknowns of the fixed circumstances. In a perfect world, I truly believe that the level of talent and energy within these players have the ability to be very special this year and onward.

So, with dynamic comes static. We have coaches whose evolution thus far has not been dynamic. They are safe, unimaginative, and unable to change as needed. They have been soft while also failing to recognize where to position a player to get the most from them. The HC has rendered to Caesar his entire time in GB.

I’m not interested in the 13-3 seasons argument that sent us home early every time with this coaching staff as being your proof of success. At worst, there should have at least been one SB appearance during that time. Coaching? They have been static.

We have dynamic players on this team. If the coaching staff remains daft to this reality and philosophically remain nothing more than mere pond water, our round one draft pick will be in the top ten next year.

If the coaches ride this wave of enthusiasm amongst the players and understand they are no longer under the thrall of Count Rodgacula and just f’n coach intelligently with a sense of excitement, energy, and creativity, this team could easily win 11 games this year.

With that said, can’t wait for my 10-day vacation starting in 2 days. My wife and daughter are going to Alaska on a church mission thing. So, I’m taking my son to my hometown in Tomah Wisconsin for 5 days to do all kinds of camping and fishing within a 90-mile radius. Topped off with a massive haul of aged Wisconsin cheese to take home with a Twins vs Mariners game for the cherry on top. Have a great weekend Packers fans.

Even most of the comments here say it isn't far fetched "if". If there is an "if" just for far fetched then it is probably against the odds greatly to make the play offs. Doesn't mean you cant enjoy the development of the team but if you are looking for Ws and playoffs this season you will more than likely be disappointed.

The NFC North plays a very easy schedule so that will help but to say Love will come in and even play as well as Rodgers last year with WRs and TEs that have barely been in the league or haven't even played a adown yet is far fetched. The OL isn't half as good as most want to say here. Sorry but our RT was benched last year in a must win game and the LT isn't what he once was having yet to play a full year since coming back. The whole right side of the line from the center struggled at times last year and they are all competing for their job or at least should be.

The defense will be without its best player to start the year and still has Barry to coordinate it. I don't usually rail on coaching or play calling but when he had Alexander in zone to start the year it was obvious this guy is clueless. He isn't going to change to suddenly get it and we can't trust him to even keep a good thing going.

The team is salary cap strapped paying for a guy who isn't even on the roster. They were not able to improve the roster with free agency (something you should be able to do with a rookie QB but not with how Gute has bungled this transition) so they will have to wait for rookies to acclimate to the team. There I wouldn't expect much this year, not enough to be able to springboard them to the playoffs.

This year will be about how they finish more then how the year starts. It is rebuilding and they have a ton of question marks. Yes it is far fetched to think all those question marks turn up favorably. Impossible, no nothing is impossible. The division still isn't strong with no marquee QB to dominate it anymore and the schedule is as easy as it gets so it is possible, just unlikely.

BB,

every Lombardi gets taken home by a team with more than one if.

Yes, we have more ifs than we've seen in a long time. Probably more than any other team in the league, but only because many teams have weak roster spots with no realistic hope of them even becoming an if.

No way does every if pan out as a star this year. Some that don't might be at least solid in this league by year 3. These are more reasons why depth is so important. And we've got some serious depth! Ifs start turning into strengths in TC. "Stacking success" is something the whole roster is primed to do, and I hope to see genuine competition fostered by the whole coaching staff, with no quitting by any player.

A LOT will happen between now and week 1.

ESPN is the latest media source to diss the Packers. Two unknowns who smell faintly like they're living in their parents- basement-dwelling-gamer- number crunchers, say the Packers have the worst roster in the NFC North. Yup, worse than the Bears. Worse than the Vikings, worse than the Lions.

Of course the national sports media dopes usually don't have a clue and maybe that's a good thing. ESPN does a wonderful job of talking about the New York Jets(oddly often ignoring the Giants)and they love the west coast teams, but in their 'fly-over zone' teams analysis they often don't have a clue.

If you look at the Packers they have two areas of need: tight end and safety. Jordan Love is not a rookie and shouldn't be treated as one. He knows the offense. A Packers 'weakness' at receiver is deceiving to the dopes. The two starters have a year under their belts. The offensive line is pretty good and with depth. The running backs might be the best in the NFC. The defense has a couple blue star players and some other really good ones.

The Packers are going to be competitive. Both the Bears and the Lions will be better, but I'm seeing the Vikings taking a nose dive. They have some great players but sorry, they don't have enough to win the division again.

Yes, Jordan is not a rookie, but he will be facing NFL defenses that are actually preparing for him instead of filling in for a guy that is out. And playing as a starter brings a new pressure. The Packers weakness at WR is similar; those guys were unknowns last year, and now teams will be trying to stop Watson and stop Doubs. Even the great Davante Adams didn't really bloom until his third year in the league. Watson and Doubs might be good enough, but it's not a given that they will be. Agree the line and RBs have above average talent and experience and that will help. But at TE, we're at the question mark again. We don't really know what we have yet.

You missed one big factor determining the Packer's record next year. We play a 3rd place schedule after years of 1st place schedules. We are going to play some of the worst teams in the league next year. Other than the Chiefs and Chargers, every game is winnable. Falcons, Saints, Raiders, Broncos, Rams, Bucs, Panthers, aren't these all easy wins?

Remember that W/L only plays into three opponents (two similar finishers in NFC (Rams and Giants) and one in the AFC (Steelers)). The Rams will likely be bad. I think the Steelers and Giants will be mediocre.
