Injury Update at Packers Training Camp: Who's Returning? Who's Dropping Out?

Jordy Nelson, Brad Jones and Andrew Quarless were among the players who dropped out of Friday night's practice in Green Bay.

The Packers had more players drop out of practice than return on Friday, but once again appeared to have avoided any major injuries.

They're a little banged up heading into Saturday's intra-squad Family Night scrimmage, but all things considered, they have to be happy with where they're at one week into training camp.

Dropping Out of Practice

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson, knee

Commentary: According to head coach Mike McCarthy, Nelson had banged his knee earlier during training camp, which was a re-occurrence of an old injury. When combined with the absences of Charles Johnson, Kevin Dorsey and Sederrik Cunningham, the Packers have more issues at wide receiver than at any other position as things currently stands. Expect the Packers to play it safe with one of their biggest stars for Family Night, while the door is open for undrafted rookies like Tyrone Walker, Myles White, Alex Gillett and Omarius Hines.

Linebacker Brad Jones, finger

Commentary: Jones started to participate in Friday's session and dropped out about halfway through with a finger injury. The training staff was looking at Jones' finger as McCarthy spoke at the conclusion of practice. Rookie Sam Barrington was practicing with the starters after Jones exited, according to Wes Hodkiewicz of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Tight end Andrew Quarless, quad

Commentary: Quarless had been making a nice recovery from a serious knee injury suffered two seasons ago until a quad injury sidelined him for all of Friday's practice. Like Nelson, expect the Packers to play it safe on Saturday with a player who has a lengthy injury history. They won't want to take any chances.

Linebacker Jamari Lattimore

Commentary: Lattimore began training camp on the non-football injury list, but was able to previously able to return. He dropped out again on Friday, still dealing with the effects of illness.

Safety David Fulton, knee

Commentary: Fulton missed one day of practice earlier in the week due to a knee injury, but was able to return on Thursday. Presumably, his knee remains the issue.

Returning to Practice

Linebacker Nate Palmer, shoulder

Commentary: The lone returnee to practice on Friday, Palmer has put himself in a place to participate in the team's Saturday scrimmage. That's a good thing for a rookie who's in need of all the practice time he can get.

Still Out

The following players' status hasn't changed (anticipated return in parentheses):

  • Cornerback Casey Hayward, hamstring (a couple weeks, as of last Friday)
  • Cornerback Tramon Williams, knee (a couple weeks, as of Tuesday)
  • Defensive lineman Mike Neal, abdomen (a couple weeks, as of last Friday)
  • Running back DuJuan Harris, knee (two or three weeks, as of Tuesday)
  • Linebacker Dezman Moses, toe (undetermined)
  • Linebacker Nate Palmer, shoulder (undetermined)
  • Offensive lineman Derek Sherrod, leg (undetermined, on his "last hurdle," according to McCarthy)
  • Wide receiver Charles Johnson, knee (presumably day to day)
  • Wide receiver Kevin Dorsey (undetermined)
  • Safety Sean Richardson, neck (undetermined)
  • Defensive lineman Jerel Worthy, knee (undetermined)
  • Offensive lineman J.C. Tretter, ankle (regular season at the earliest)
  • Wide receiver Sederrik Cunningham, wrist (indefinite)

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Jordy's knee problem is not going away.

It first occurred years ago when he was fielding a punt and was hit after bobbling the catch. It's flared-up from time-to-time over the years(SB - last year) and now in training camp. Having fluid build-up in the knee is a sign something's wrong. They should have addressed this years ago.

If he's gone during the regular season we're dealing with a lot of unknowns as replacements, especially since half of them are injured themselves.

Last year Jordy had hamstring issues. Not a knee injury. Completely unrelated. Jordy doesn't have a knee problem.

At least not one that is worth being overly concerned about.

In addition to the hammy he hurt his ankle AND had swelling in his knee. This is from an injury report prior to last years playoffs: "WR Jordy Nelson, Packers (knee – probable)

Nelson has missed a number of games this season due to ankle and hamstring injuries and was added to the team’s injury report for tonight’s game, this time due to a knee injury. The Packers haven’t discussed exactly when or how Nelson hurt the knee, just that he has improved as the week of practice has gone on and that he should be ready to play this afternoon. With Nelson and Cobb near 100%, the Packers will be playing with as healthy a WR corps as they have dressed since early in the season."

I'll go out on a limb(get it - out on a limb) and suggest that Jordy's going to miss some regular season action due to his knee.

@Stroh

Absolutely ridiculous.... Maybe that SW sun has fried your brain. ... Reading and reading for comprehension are two different events.

When Jordy came back from his hamstring issues, Mac pulled him 1st game back because his knee acted up.
