How Much Do We Know About Young Players From Five Packers Practices?

While there are some great stand out players so far in Training Camp, maybe it's time to pump the brakes on naming them starters.

Nearly a week into Packers Training Camp and with Family Night Practice on the horizon; it’s difficult – after the long, dark, NFL offseason – to temper one’s excitement. Packers fans are in a league all their own, showing up at sunrise for practices, filling chats and blogs like this one with comments to get their fill on the latest news on the team, following every camp tweet, McCarthy post practice press conference, wanting to know the surprises and disappointments, wanting to know everything.

Fans were asking for standouts on day 2 of camp. The internet is brimming with praise for so far camp standouts like Ty Montgomery and LaDarius Gunter and full of wondering if the window is closing on injured players like Jared Abbrederis and John Crockett, as they continue to miss playing time and others at their respective positions are standing out.

This is the time, much like the beginning of a relationship, when everything (outside of injuries) feels full of promise and hope. A player is catching every ball thrown at them? Throw them in, at the very least, as the number 3 wide receiver. Multiple interceptions and pass breakups? Maybe cornerback isn’t a position to be worried about after all.

With the first cuts not due until September 1st, the daily and weekly camp standouts are bound to change. A week ago, few would have guessed that Gunter would be the name on everyone’s lips, that Abbrederis and retirement would be a common talking point or that some circles have Khyri Thorton already cut.

A week from now, Montgomery and Richard Rodgers may still be catching nearly every ball thrown their way and Rajion Neal may still be running Crockett’s roster spot into the ground. Or maybe another less heralded, less familiar player may be the talk of the town.

So, for fun, because that’s what this time of year calls for, let’s look back at some of the players who were standouts in 2014 fifth practice and 2013 sixth practice.

In 2014, Sean Richardson was a stud with numerous picks. Members of the media said he was always around the ball and that he looked really good. Quotes from the CheeseheadTV camp live blog “don’t count him out of the safety competition.” Richardson did make the team, returning from a serious neck injury. He played on defense in 12 regular season games and logged 25 tackles. (Compare with Micah Hyde’s 59 tackles in 16 regular season games). Wikipedia doesn’t even list him on the Packers depth chart. Richardson was a restricted free agent in 2015, and the Packers matched the Raiders contract offer to him to keep Richardson on the team.

Other notable names from 2014’s fifth practice: LaDarius Perkins was “turning heads” – spent the final two months of the NFL season on the Steelers practice squad – and Alex Gillett a member of the Packers 2014 practice squad and currently on the roster. Chatters were already beginning to wonder about Khyri Thorton and if he would pan out and felt confident that Sam Barrington could replace Brad Jones.

In 2013, fans watching practice were yelling “alligator arms” at Randall Cobb after repeated drops and online chatters were suggesting keeping Cobb on special teams and as an “out of the back field/trick play” option. Loyce Means took snaps with the ones, and people were praising Jerron McMillian’s good camp. During the 6th practice, McMillian had back to back plays of breaking up passes; McMillian didn’t make it through the 2013 season, being cut in early December.

But the big name people were talking about: James Nixon, multiple interceptions and performing on a consistent basis. Nixon played in three games for the Packers in 2013 and left a goose egg in the stats columns.

Hindsight is 20/20. Anyone can go back to tweets, posts, comments a year later and say “you thought player X would be great, boy were you wrong.” No one is right on every player, every year. And it is interesting to see the players that the fans and the media were excited about early on that did pan out. But at this point in the season, the swell raises quite high, quite quickly upon news of a potential new star and crushes like a black hole on the potential downfall of a player. It’s the thirst for water after walking in the offseason desert; take the news, soak it in and live it to the max.

So don’t be surprised if next week we are talking about completely different players. Players who might not stand out in early morning practices, but shine under the lights at Lambeau; players who take a little longer to learn new plays and begin out preforming ones who caught on quicker. Or players who did great when part of the team was still learning the plays, but fall behind when facing another team in preseason.

Yeah, you're right. Part of us knew it all along. It's kind of like that new relationship. Then s/he meets your friends and they're like, "This ain't gonna last, s/he is too ____ for you. What were you thinking?" Sigh.

In my case they fill in the ________ with "intelligent", "classy", and/or "felony free".
Double sigh.

Jayme, very fair question! Yes, we knows nothing at the moment. On the other hand, if someone did not made one good move through whole week of practice, that may be significant...

But, I think the best is to wait to see how the things will get out...

I think were still talking about Montgomery and Gunter, but I also think Ryan, Rollins, and Randell are going to names were talking about because of their play.

Ryan is an interesting player. I just read another article where Ryan was rated as the 5th best OLB by scouts heading into the 2014 College Football Season, 5th!! I never knew Ryan was THAT highly thought of as an OLB but how great is that? Obviously he was moved inside in 2014 but Thompson found another guy that can play multiple positions. The Packers have another piece they can move around which will only make Matthews and the rest of the defense that much more effective.

Like to see a D-Lineman stand out like Pennel for example. If Guions suspension holds up I'd feel a lot better if the Packers had another Run Stuffer in week 2.

It is really hard to temper enthusiasm when we hear how good certain players are looking. And it is true that just because a guy is looking really good now, doesn't mean it will translate to games or that individual will continue to improve. That is why we have 4 preseason games to get that worked out.

That being said, when we see a 3rd round pick making plays all over and proving himself its hard to not get excited.

The first true test for these guys will be for them playing in their first preseason game. And after that they will have 3 more games to prove themselves to be worthy to be on the 53 man roster.

One thing that I love about training camp and preseason games, is getting to see all these young players fighting for a roster spot. I love to see who is going to be the future of our team. When guys perform well, it might not necessarily mean they will be contributing a lot this year. However they maybe the future of our team, and that's what I look forward to seeing.

It is too early to anoint any of these players as the guy who is going to stand out and contribute or start in 2015. What is interesting is that the talent seems good at some of the positions that were in question. I do feel that there is a good chance that one of the players in each group (i.e. at ILB, CB, RB, and to a much lesser extent TE and DL) will emerge as a competent contributor or back-up.

Agree!
And, in a gesture of great wisdom, I myself am going to wait another full 15 minutes before the anointing commences.

LOL. I had to stop myself from picking out a couple of players to, well, not anoint, but praise.

Good points! Quick summary:
Pump the brakes.
Patience.

But, I would also offer that "looking good is better than looking bad", and I will offer no comment on the classic "it's better to look good than to feel good".

Hidden in the details... Myles White beat Gunter twice for a long gain and a TD. How good did Gunter look on those plays? Chris Banjo dominated the one-on-one drills with TEs. This has to mean the TEs are terrible!

Myles White aka Mr August...always shows up in training camp, yet we never see him do anything during the regular season. At least one of the up and coming players we're all talking about now will be co-training camp darling that never does anything star worthy during the regular season.

Love the article! 1) This is first, and foremost, entertainment for us fans. It's fun to make projections and predictions. Being right runs a distant third. 2) We tend to minimize the chasm in expertise, depth of experience, and knowledge between ourselves as fans and the professionalism of the coaches, scouts, evaluators who spend large chunks of their entire lives studying the game. That said, Damarious Randall will start some games at CB this year; Richard Rodgers will be a real weapon; Thornton is a bust; Jones is a journeyman; Hundley goes on IR; Raji repeats 2010; Palmer wins the inside job; Crockett goes to PS; Montgomery returns 2 KO for TDs; Packers offense sets a scoring record; Packers win Superbowl L.

Its nice to read something that takes you back and puts it in perspective. Way to dig it up! Its hard to remember all the names and details.

Id like to read an article on the guys that got cut or stolen from the practice squad because there was no room for them and produced for another team. All i can think of right now is WR charles rodgers in minnesota and jumal rolle in houston. Feel free to correct me if a name/team is wrong.

Loved the 2013 and 2014 flashback perspectives. Very helpful reminder to pump the brakes.
Thanks Jayme!
