Gut Reactions: Week 3 vs Kansas City

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers' win over the Chiefs

  • I watched this game at Corey's place. Most of it is hazy
  • This team isn't losing in Lambeau any time soon.
  • Aaron Rodgers is inhuman.
  • Have we sent the Giants a fruit basket for cutting James Jones yet?
  • The Chiefs couldn't block Mike Daniels.
  • Travis Kelce kept talking, even while he kept doing very little.
  • Casey Hayward, despite the penalty, played a very good game.
  • Don Barclay more than held his own.
  • The rookie defensive backs look legit.
  • As does Jayrone Elliott.
  • Eddie Lacy and Davante Adams need to be commended for gutting out.
  • I am drunk.
  • I love this team.
  • And all of you.
  • Go Pack Go.

That "wannabe Gronk" who apparently "did very little" had six catches for 80 yards. If 6 for 80 is considered to be shutting him down, I think we need to seriously adjust our expectations.

Your right IF. The receiver was on his back with the ball clearly on the 33 yards line with his feet facing the end zone when Shields touched him down. Even after he rolled forward after being touched he was still short. Horrible spot!

There was no reason to measure because where they spotted the ball. it was obviously a first down. Unfortunately, they missed the spot by 1 1/2 - 2 yards. One of the worst spots I've seen.

When Shields went down and held up the next play for a few moments, I was hoping the Refs might get buzzed to check the spot. I rewatched that play on the DVR this morning several times and still can't believe they missed that spot by that much.

- That second drive was a clinic in playcall and execution.
- Montgomery is amazing at drawing penalties. Maybe it's the only way DBs can slow him down.
- Rodgers.....that 12 man thing. That is way better than Seattle's 12th man thing.
- Props to the Eric Berry lymphoma story. That is a way better story than deflategate. Where the hell is the media on that one?
- Alonzo's first carry for 16 yards. Who wouldn't follow Sitton on your first carry?
- Pylon cam? What will they think of next. Cool vantage point.
- Clay is amazing in coverage. Among everything else.
- Palmer sniffin out screens.
- Really?! The HaHa penalty but not the Randall penalty for the same hit? Just be consistent.
- 7 sacks. I like the psycho and jumbo packages.........a lot......
- Every player that anyone has bagged on here, had a tremendous game. Keep the faith fans.
- We are watching greatness. Every week.

This was a dominating performance for the Packers. OL and DL dominated for the second week in a row. Chiefs should never have had their last TD. Their receiver was short of the 1st down by a yard. We couldn't challenge but the refs should not have blown that call because the Chiefs receiver wasn't close. Anyway a great team win for the Packers. Rodgers was unstoppable. Game ball to Daniels for sure. I would have liked to see Jayron Elliott get more snaps. Palmer continues to improve with every game. 3-0 on to the Niners. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Barclay was serviceable tonight against the best pass rusher in the game. Bachitari was awful almost all night in pass protection. He spent more time in the pocket then Rodgers.

Alex Smith is just inadequate in almost every aspect of being a QB. KC will never string together playoff wins with him at QB no matter how good their def or running back.

Peppers plays too much. He just isn't productive this season. He needs to lose snaps to Elliott and/or Perry.

Rodgers coupled with that run game is a thing of beauty. No real way to defend this offense even with all the WR injuries.

Raji made a number of nice plays again tonight. I hope I have to eat a lot of crow. We'll see if he continues to make plays.

He has already made more plays in 3 games than the lady 3 years that he played.

Matthews was awesome. Hayward played very well.

I'm 100% OK with that last KC touchdown drive. They need 16 puts and you force them to use 17 plays, 4+ minutes and a timeout to score? I'll take that. Would have preferred the refs get the spot right on the Maclin catch, but oh well.

September 28, 2015 at 11:45 pm

I was one who didn't think this would be a close one - I didn't see how KC had enough offensive threats to contend on the road. So I am surprised they made it even that close.

On offense Rodgers was clinical. With KC lining up 2nd string safeties on Cobb they may as well just waved the white flag. The offense is different this year. Gone is any vertical threat and its a short pass offense. When Rodgers is the trigger that can work well. Whether the short pass offense is a response to Nelson being gone or is just the new offense to keep Rodgers upright I will leave to someone not drunk to discuss.

On defense I looked right for the first half. The D looked fast and aggressive. They made KC look outmatched and made the big turnover to build the big lead. Then in the second half for some reason they blitzed. Why you blitz a team that could not move the ball and has limited receiving options I am not sure. But when the blitzes did not get home they left the young secondary exposed. And they let the QB get some rhythm and confidence. Burnett out always hurts this team but there is still work to do with all the youngsters back in the secondary.

Well the good will be pretty easy - Rodgers, Cobb, Daniels.

The bad - our ability to defend the middle on pass plays in garbage time.

The ugly - Colin Kaepernick - just getting ready for next Sunday.

Yup - and so was MM in his presser.

KC converts the final two pointer and it's a one score game after they had been totally dominated. Hate that.

Besides, what else did they do bad in that game? That's about the only thing that comes to my mind.

The Great: Rodgers, Cobb, JJones, Daniels, Matthews; I thought JJones set the tone early. KC started to droop their ears every time Jones caught a tough ball and made yards after the catch.
Rodgers' hard count, and those orchestrated offsides strikes; astounding. The announcer Gruden was giddy over it.

The Good: bagfull of young defenders; JElliot, DRandall, NPalmer, and a little Joe Thomas thrown in as a 4 for the price of 3.
Call-out to Special Teams; MM made good on this promise to overhaul that unit. Its all but official; its improved. Coverages were great. Returns were solid, smart decisions, few penalties. Crosby is on top of his game. It was fun to watch that unit for first year in long time. Masthay is not shanking at least, but he's still lost something to his punts, I don't understand it.

The Good: Oline praise----3 in a row against Seattle and KC front 7 units.

The Bad: classic Capers soft defense in 4thQ.
Refs; how many flags? Then you add some more for fun of it? Overall, they were ok, but jeez, they seem too quick to flag legitimate hard hits.

I'll side with Dan. Concern would be too strong of a word. They were put away at 38-14. NFCCG was once in a lifetime event so we're covered for quite awhile.

MM will tell you he was concerned, but that was more for having young guys in there who gave up yards. Doubt he was actually concerned about the games outcome.

Sterling Sharpe comes immediately to mind. Very similar size (6 215-220), physicality, running ability after catch. Be quite a stretch to say he's in Sharpe's class as a WR tho. But I like Monty a lot.

Anquan Boldin would be next closest that I've seen.

Apparently there's so many good things to mention that we failed to say anything about Jamaal Charles only getting 49 yards. And much of that was in the garbage time.

For a team that can't stop the run inside or outside........that's pretty damn good.

We just survived three really good running backs in a row. Without arguably one of our best run stuffers on the sideline for two of those contests.

Forte's yards came not because the D-Line was bad and not so much because the OLBs were terrible: Forte got those yards due to poor ILB and safety run fits. Palmer has improved and the fits are there. Daniels and Raji played well tonight; there was little up the middle. DBs were active in run support too.

Fantastic TEAM WIN.

7:1 sacks, in our favor.

Rodgers just orchestrating shit even with no Jordy, Adams or Q (who has been quiet, but still... he trusts him).

Young DB's smoking mofos!

ST gave up one big return, but aside from that, good night.

Montgomery getting valuable OTJ training, will only benefit us down the road (kid will be a stud!).

Damarius Randall over all had a decent game. He got worked a little bit in the second half, gave up a string of plays. He's a rookie. Decent game. Lots of room for improvement.. But boy, did he lay the wood on that one hit. Wow.

Aaron Rodgers... A special player. He makes everyone better.
James Jones... How he returned to the Packers will be a recurring and inspirational storyline all year.
The D-line... Playing great ball. Raji and Daniels playing like men possessed.
Matthews has an amazing motor.
It's fun to watch the rookies, Randall, Rollins, and Montgomery develop.
Joe Thomas may be small for an ILB, but he hits like a missile.
This team has the look of a champion!

You have to put some of the blame for the Macklin spot back on the Pack for being unable to challenge.

Offense is unstoppable, as long as #12 is healthy.

Had my Wiscodisco in a can in Lambeau, but I don't Twitter. The Amber version I had in the bar on Saturday was a better beer. Although the bartenders kept calling it Stillmark Brewery.

Lambeau is the best stadium. It is so great that I saw three Vikings fans there. And lots of Chiefs fans. What up Packers fans? Skip the internet and sell to friends, family, even that jerk at the office if you have to. Keep Lambeau green. You know it is the right thing to do.

I'll try to keep my excitement in check, but it's hard. They've played one pushover in week 1, and then 2 good teams (not great) in weeks 2 and 3.
They'll have a tough one after the break going to the Broncos. At that point they should be 5-1 or 6-0. The other real tough one is going to the Cardinals end of December, but there is a lotta ballgame left til then. Overall this team could go 12-4 or 13-3 this year. Good enough to win the NFC North and possibly home field advantage.
#12 is unreal. Greatness every week. I think Gruden wishes he'd be back coaching and have a QB like that :) I thought the D played well, given they've had a few more injuries. Thomas filled in nicely, and Palmer is a very pleasant surprise. How he tackled Charles despite being blocked by another guy when he had nobody behind him was astounding. Raji is a wrecking ball in there. Man he cannot be stopped 1-1. Randall and Rollins are a work in progress, but light years ahead of Goodson and whoever else is a rookie or 1-st year player at DB. Hyde s solid. Shields still ducked on the first TD for the chiefs. can't do that young man, be he improved later on.
montgomery is a LB in a WR body. So is Janis. And boy do I love when I see Ripkowski and Kuhn both on ST. Not afraid to hit someone. This is as talented a team as I've seen any Packers team, and I've seen quite a few...

Had a great view on Palmer's disruption of the screen play, and it sticks out in my head even this morning. Too many times I've seen Packers defenders unable to shed the block and the screen play goes for big yards. Gives you real faith in Palmer.

Now that MM has relinquished play calling duties, I don't know if we're going to be able to hang the 'lacks a killer instinct' moniker on MM as easily anymore.

Perhaps the Chiefs adjusted well- Rodgers had a few stalled drives in the second half, and for all the talk some fans have made of 'prevent defense' last night in the second half (I lol every time I hear it), the Packers came out ultra-aggressive in the second half throwing pressure at alex smith almost down after down, and they got flat out burned.

I don't think the Packers quite put it into neutral as much as many fans want to believe. They came out with intent to kill in the second half IMO, and didn't get the results they were looking for. I believe it was only then that they pumped the brakes a bit.

When you have a 38-14 lead you let the other team run the clock out if they're willing to do so. The offense had +4 minute drive in the 4th. No complaints about the 4th quarter here.

I think we need to work on PLAYING a complete game. This THREE QUARTERS of Football at home has bitten us before and if we aren't careful will bite us again.

CONDITIONING is hard during the season and the COLD does help you with fatigue (in my opinion). We clearly didn't take Kansas City serious which is evident with the 4th and 5 debacle in the first half.

Really nice team effort. Special teams looked good except that one long Knile Davis return (his bumble may have impacted the coverage).

I hate Jay "I blow in the wind" Gruden calling games, but he made a couple nice observations on the Packer receivers blocking downfield. Several plays where you could see the ball carrier coming up on Janis or Montgomery taking a DB out of the play. At some point, the Packers are going to have to turn Janis loose. He's going to get more play the next couple of weeks with Adams's balky ankle, and they need to use him to take the top off the defense.

Encouraging to see quality play from guys a little lower down the depth chart like Chris Banjo (Richardson was a healthy scratch?) and Joe Thomas.

A really good win that wasn't nearly as close as the final score implies.

Gruden just seems to sing everyone's praises no matter what they do. At the start of the game he said something like Casey Hayward has played really well so far this year and Packer fans have to clear out their ears to make sure they heard that right.

I think Gruden would take a picture of the guy sweeping the stadium tunnel out and tell you "look how he sweeps to the left, look how he sweeps to the right, he's got everything you want in a sweeper..."

Seems like Rodgers is even more skeptical about throwing Janis the ball than he is with all inexperienced receivers... And that's not going to get any better any time soon if Janis squanders his already limited opportunities by making pre-snap mental mistakes that end in penalty or by putting the ball on the ground.

All the potential in the world won't mean squat if it doesn't get applied. See Robert Ferguson. Janis is a physical freak, but I'm not sure he's a great wide receiver. Good news for Jeff is he's a talented ST'er so he'll get plenty of time to try and figure it out.

How about play clock management in the BAD. We pissed away timeouts early in the 2nd half. It would have been nice to have one for the 4th and 18 ball spot

Rodgers 25th in career TD's.
205th in career picks.

This twitter post shows well just how big an outlier he is and how amazing he plays the position.
