Gut Reactions: 2014 Week 13 vs The Patriots
Analysis from a Green Bay Packers' 26-21 victory over the New England Patriots at Lambeau Field.
By PackerAaron
- Bye Cow.
- I've never been happier that one of my game predictions was wrong.
- Despite the bad drop, Davante Adams played a hell of a game.
- As did Mike Daniels.
- Aaron Rodgers seemed to start a bit geeked-up. Lots of hot throws. But he was the difference in a game where the other quarterback was Tom Brady. That's how good he is.
- Loved how creative McCarthy got with some of the designed plays to get Cobb free.
- Also loved Jordy Nelson blowing up Revis Island. No excuses, Pats fans. Cover 1, and Jordy won the route.
- Yes, the Green Bay Packers are a Super Bowl contender.
- Eddie Lacy seems to consistently miss the obvious cutback lane.
- I can't believe Gronkowski didn't single handedly kill the Packers.
- Tramon was up and down.
- David Bakhitiari played a fantastic game.
- Great job by the perimeter guys allowing non-Gronk receivers to do much of anything.
- Why was Mason Crosby instructed to hit line-drives? It boggles the mind.
- Linsley was late recognizing a blitz from the middle linebacker on one 3rd down that ruined a redzone possession.
- Loved Belichick chatting with McCarthy post-game. He had nice things to say after the game in 2010, clearly respects Mike. Wish more Packers fans did.
- Have to fly and get to work. I might post more later tonight.
- I love this team.
- Go Pack.

I still hate the toss/sweep play
We can win against an elite QB.
We left a lot of points on the field.
Our team plays to the level of the competition.
Our packers are the best team in the nfl.
No screen plays? I love the screen play.
Adams had to have a big game and did.
Eddy lacy is why we won.

I respectfully disagree. They've boat raced inferior teams and now stood toe to toe with the best the AFC has to offer. No dip in performance.

5 things:
1.) I was right. It was an awesome defensive game. Everyone on the offense should hug the defense. Dom Capers was great too.
2.) I thought the refs missed a lot of calls against the Packers. Just me?
3.) We should be happy we have a player like Aaron Rodgers.
4.) No screen passes? Hmm...
5.) Adams, as well as most of this rookie class, is performing vastly beyond expectations. Paul Richardson of the Seahawks is the only underperforming rookie I can think of.
COW, you are now the ridicule of the Packer's fan base on this website.

Big-huge-MONSTROUS 3rd down pass play to convert the last first down and keep Brady off the field. The o-line gave Rodgers all down and he found a well-covered Cobb for the conversion. Perfect blocking, perfect pass, perfect concentration in traffic to make the catch. We're spoiled by that sort of thing but fans of just about anyone else were dropping their jaws over that one.
Fantastic win. Can we start talking about home field and the re-captured Lambeau mystique yet?

I really disagree about Daniels. I felt he got pushed all over and did not have a good game. I think HHCD was a stud defending Gronk, though. He's our future answer against elite TE's. CB's did well even after we lost Shields. House is clearly growing as a player, and Tramon is gone after this year. I also think the line drives were smart for as cold as it was, and they worked well.
I also continue to say that Bakhtiari is a future Pro Bowl LT and an absolute steal in the 4th round. I thought he should've been a 1st that would go in the 2nd. Can't believe he fell.
The Packers are a good team that took a step today. They still fail to capitalize on many mistakes of the opponents, and we still waste way too many timeouts. It could bite us some day against an elite team if we get behind.
I also feel the defense played very average for the most part. They held the Patriots to no FG's because they were getting TD's instead, and it's the long drives of the offense that kept the Patriot offense from heating up.

Regarding Daniels, yes and no. He was very disruptive and had 3 of our 5 QB hits. He supplied some of the impressive pass rush, which was consistent even though it did not produce earth-shattering statistics. I have written before that Daniels is at best adequate against the run.

McCarthy was able to out-scheme Belichek into having LBs on Randall Cobb from time to time, for god's sake. They respected Revis but didn't fear him and Jordy rewarded them with a fire on Revis Island. They lined up in creative formations and got contributions from a lot of different guys.
Brilliant offensive game plan by MM and Co.

I don't feel like we can rip the D. No one in the NFL has been able to stop Brady. We forced punts when we needed them. And that last stop was so money. We had a good game plan. Gronk gonna be Gronk. His damage was acceptable. This will be the lynch pin to launch our D into confident. Also: props to Barrington minutes.

It was 4th and 18 and by the time they attempted the FG there was 2:40 on the clock and he had 2 5time outs and the 2 minute warning. If they hold they get the ball with 2 minutes at worst down by 3. He has a All-Pro kicker who'd missed one FG all year and like 2 last year. I'm sure though MM would run 3 times, the defense would hold, and he'd kick a FG to win. TO BAD BILL!

So much to love about the offense today:
- Long, clock-eating drives
- Third-down conversions
- Oline play
- Clutch catches by the WRs (with one notable exception)
- Clutch catches by some TEs at important times
- Insane throws by QB1
Only stalling in the red zone and some rushing troubles at times keeps it from being an A+.

Great game by the Packers. The big difference on defense is our ability to stop the run. Last in the league at one point this season, we've now turned in solid if not respectable efforts against the Bears, Eagles, Vikes and now the Pats. When this defense can force opponents off the field and get the ball into the hands of 12 and our dynamic offense, wins happen.
As for our offense, it starts with that o-line. Gritty as all hell. Lang's ankle, Sitton's toe, the rookie at center...I just love this group. And they are flat out dominating. And kudos to 12 for moving so fluidly in the pocket. The guy just seems to have this magic sense of how/where the pocket is collapsing, when the step up, when to drop back...I don't know how he does it, and I've never seen a QB do it better. Ever.
Don't care about cow and I don't care to talk about cow.

Also, if you're an offensive coach, why not just teach the WRs, on every third down, to just run out, turn to face the DB, and run directly into him. All you need is that illegal contact call for a first down. I hate that penalty.
DraftHobbyist
November 30, 2014 at 07:27 pm
Yeah, Tramon got screwed. If the offensive player runs into the defensive player it's supposed to be a penalty on the offensive player, and usually it's a no call. The refs got that one wrong.
HankScorpio
November 30, 2014 at 07:41 pm
On the 12 second pass play, Jordy got tackled in the end zone directly in front of the ref. So it's far from an automatic flag.
Even on the play in question, NE had to whine for it. Sort of looks bad that they got it. I mean, a pre-throw penalty draws a flag 2 seconds after the pass is incomplete? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

I lied. I can't help but to take this all in! This was a helluva win by the Packers!
FIRST: Let's give coach MM his props damn it!
- Sam Barrington first tackle is EXACTLY why he should be starting over AJ Hawk. He HITS! He attacks! And his energy is something NO other LB gives (even Clay). His only bad play I can think of was on that Blount 3rd and short run where he got lazy and assumed the play was over.
- I loved seeing the "new" formations we ran on offense (like I predicted). I seen the Bunch Formation,The Cobra,a new wrinkle with Cobb AND Boykin in the backfield and a ton of motion pre-snap. I was spot on.
- I am SOOOOOO proud of this defense. I think the coaches are finally getting "it" and are playing the right players and playing the right players in the right position.
- Clay missed an assignment and Brady found a wide-open RB,but Clay was a huge reason why Gronk didn't really have a big game. Some people may not have noticed, but on plays where Gronk was at TE and Clay was at OLB - at the snap Clay followed Gronk on his outside and whoever was manned up on Gronk covered his inside. Beautiful design.
-It felt like the Pats played TON of zone. Either that, or they're a helluva man-coverage bunch.
** I'm going with zone, because we were horrible in the red-zone**
-Peppers,Neal and Daniels all had huge plays. They may not show up with many stats, but they all had key plays.
-Cobb is making some moneeeeeeeeeeeey!
-No excuse for that Adams dropped TD pass, but dude has to be a bit more consistent. He's a damn good looking rookie WR though.
-Quarless had some clutch catches. He caught some darts from Rodgers in the freezing cold while being blanketed. Many props to Quarless.
- We MUST figure out what's up with our running game. It's not bad,but it's also not fully reliable. I'm getting a bit anxious to see what Harris can do on just a handful of carries with the # 1s.

Barrington was ok, when you watch replays you will see him facing the wrong way on some running plays, when Hawk was in he did come up and make some stops in the gap so dont get all giddy over Barrington, a rotation is nice keeps everyone fresh, on the two passing Pats TD's I think if our DB's turn around sooner maybe they dont score, but great game, team win I wonder how the defense would be with Raji in there.

"Eddie Lacy seems to consistently miss the obvious cutback lane."
I just don't have the football acumen to properly assess Mr. Nagler's comment (at least, I would need replays and/or All-22). There seems to be some schizophrenia about Lacy. Many love him. I do note that an author on another site used film/gifs to break down the last 5 running plays where GB ran out the clock last week and showed that on 2 of the 5 plays, Lacy missed the correct cutback lane (even though Lacy gained nice chunks of yardage). Still, Lacy is great after contact, his pass pro is very good now, and he has become a pretty good receiver out of the backfield. Definitely a plus player (IMO). And no, I don't mean to imply that Mr. Nagler thinks otherwise - I don't mean to put words in Mr. Nagler's mouth.
DrealynWilliams
December 01, 2014 at 04:19 pm
Here's how I look at it:
Teams are going to be in a world of trouble if/when Lacy gets his groove back and becomes more consistent. There will no stopping this Offense.
