Gut Reactions: 2014 Week 11 vs the Philadelphia Eagles

Aaron's Gut Reactions from the Packers' win over the Eagles.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers by Benny Sieu—USA Today Sports.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers by Benny Sieu—USA Today Sports.

  • The Packers have been operating in some capacity since 1919 and had never dropped 50 on opponents in back to back weeks...until today.
  • Aaron Rodgers made himself the favorite for league MVP today.
  • Great effort from Letroy Guion today, not just on his sack but little things like sniffing out a screen pass and taking a great angle to stop McCoy prior to the first down marker. The Eagles had to settle for an early FG as a result.
  • Clay Matthews better get used to playing all over. Great work both inside and outside today.
  • Eddie Lacy barreling over defenders to get into the endzone never gets old.
  • Celebration penalties are the worst. God forbid a guy has fun with his teammates after scoring a touchdown.
  • Corey Linsley gets noticed for a bad snap (...that Rodgers should have caught) but won't get noticed for how much ass he's kicking.
  • Jordy Nelson set the tone right out of the gate by burning Fletcher against a single-high look. God help defensive coordinators around the league.
  • I liked how McCarthy came out throwing. Put the ball in Rodgers' hands, get a lead, let the defense pin their ears back and pound Lacy to run the clock when you're winning. Should be the Packers' formula the rest of the year.
  • I was surprised Sam Shields wasn't challenged much today. He hasn't looked great since coming back from the injury.
  • Richard Rodgers had one bad play early in the run game, but he quietly had a good game otherwise.
  • I'm actually glad special teams had a bunch of screw ups. Will keep Mike mad. Get after them in practice this week Mike!
  • God I love this team.
  • Enjoy this Packers fans. You just have to look at that Vikings-Bears game to know how great you have it.
  • Speaking of which, bring on the Vikings.
  • Go Pack.

Another ho-hum home ass kicking. This team is definitely hitting its stride and is a force to be reckoned with.

Really glad the Pats game is at Lambeau.

I'm starting to think this is really what this team actually looks like.

Defense seems to be pulling it together. Of course I'd like to see a larger data set.

It's the same every year. McCarthy teams start out slow, but come November those teams hit their stride. Last year would've been similar, but Aaron got injured. I don't know what he does in mid season, but it is working.
This year, I think we haven't seen their best yet. No matter what, December will be huge. The NFC West will beat each other up the next few weeks. If I could take a guess, I'd say Seattle won't make the playoffs. One needs 11-5 this year in the NFC. Except for the NFC South. 6-10 is enough to win that sorry excuse of a division.

EArly season is "stat whoring time."

It's only when they get to the verge of elimination, like in '10 when they start to turn it around and "try hard."

And we haven't had a dominant running game since the Vikings (which shouldn't really count). This team can be so much scarier.

I want to see an average game from Rodgers, good game from the RBs, a good game from the D and a Win. That will say A LOT.

Man,I love this team.

The bet was that he had to put a lid on it for the playoffs. Next year I'll be sure to up it to whenever they beat whatever stupid win total he comes up with then. For now, I'm enjoying the idea of a run that will at least take the Packers to the NFC Championship game.

The D is starting to come together, the O-line is playing lights out. We could've dropped 70 the last two weeks, legitimately. Barring injuries, we are going to be very tough to deal with... for anyone.

Even the seeding doesn't really matter. Just that the Packers get one of the 6 available slots. Once they are in, it's all of matter of whether they make the plays on gameday. And they definitely have the talent in all 3 phases to get the job done.

Hey Cow, it's been a long time since I posted here but I saw your comment and couldn't resist. The whole " he doesn't pay up on his bets" thing is a result of you still posting on this site after making the exact same bet last year. You assured us all during the pre-season that the Packers were to go 6-10 and promised to leave if they were any better. And that was assuming a healthy Rodgers. We lost Rodgers for 8 games but still went 8-7-1 yet here you are, still posting and showing your lack of credibility, your inability to own your words and hold yourself accountable to any of your ridiculous predictions and bets.

So forgive me if the whole "go get cow" thing hurts your precious feelings, but don't dish it out if you can't take it. You relish in the negativity that your obvious troll posts conjure up and the proof is in your last comment "Funny thing is... even when I'm not here... I still am... because you guys keep bringing me up. I bet you'll continue to do so even if I have to leave." So if you get to enjoy our reactions to your idiocy then it's only fair you take the backlash like a man when you're wrong (almost always).

You really can't say anything more about the offense that the scoreboards haven't already said. I really like the way the defense has responded to some ass whoopings (Saints game). They are gang tackling, creating TOs, scoring, forcing 3 and outs, and genuinely look like they are having fun out there. I think that bodes well for us down the stretch. I want the Lions right now!

We just held one of the most prolific offenses in football to essentially six points when it mattered.

I'm more worried about the power Running teams.

But clay inside is certainly plugging those monster truck like holes we were seeing earlier.

I feel like our safety play has been awesome in this regard as well. Haha had a bad miss against sproles once.......but who doesn't?

Agree with all of the above, but note that 3/4 of the top NFC rushing teams (Seattle, New Orleans and San Fran) would all miss the playoffs if they started tomorrow. The Packers could very well find that the path to the Super Bowl doesn't even require them to match up against a serious power rushing team.

"one of the most prolific offenses in football" I don't know Bohj. They had a pretty easy schedule so far. The meaningful games they lost, with the exception of the Colts game. Otherwise they beat up the likes of Jaguars, Redskins, and Giants... They had 4 games against good teams (Colts, 49ers, Cardinals, Packers), and scored 30, 21, 20, and 20 points.

Its true. But good offenses tend to put up numbers against mediocre teams or mediocre defenses. We do the same thing but I would still consider our offense prolific. The feel good here..... Is that today.....we were not a mediocre defense.

And an argument could be made that we went up big again and forced one dimensionality. I don't buy that with the eagles offense. They can run and pass with the same efficiency and speed whether they are down or not.

We score higher on average against "good teams". I've seen the Eagles 3 times now this season, and I've always had the same feeling - this is a gimmicky offense that only can succeed if they can misdirect and use finesse. And get the ball back from their D in good positions when their D is forcing a turnover. They do not have a good QB, no matter whether Sanchez or Foles plays, though. Take Macklin away and limit Sproles and Matthews, and their O is not worth much without big contributions from those players.

If it took the beatdown the Saints handed the Packers to get them to make a drastic move like trying Matthews inside, I say that game was the best thing that could have happened to them.

Matthews hasn't been the only reason for the improved run defense. But it sure doesn't hurt to have a sideline to sideline maniac with a motor like his in the very heart of the defense. It helps set a tone of aggression that is necessary to playing good defense.

I'm as guilty as anyone. At the same time, I am sometimes wondering about myself. We all know he is neither a Packers fan nor makes any significant discussion contributions. Because there is no discussion about football matters. Just typing in caps or ridiculous statements, name calling, and if one really looks at it, just the effort to troll. So I will make an effort to just ignore what that guy says from now on and not comment on it anymore. If we all did that then he will go away naturally. And it's not that I want to ignore posts or posters if there is a meaningful disagreement. After all, we see things differently. But there is no discussion, as I said just throwing out ridiculous statements and predictions just is not cutting it for me anymore.

Every true Packer fan is happy when the Packers win. Everyone has opinions and that's ok too. But when a so-called fan of the Packers comes on a Packer site and belittles everything they try to do, they deserve every bit of backlash they get. From TT, MM, even bashing Rodgers, Matthews and any other player who may have an off day once in a while. When the negative attention seeker gets his just rewards, its well deserved.

The takeaway from today for those who said the Packers haven't beaten a good team: they just did. And Seattle lost to Kansas City, and Detroit to Arizona. Just like the Pack lost in Seattle and New Orleans. Simple fact: it's hard to beat a good team in the their house. It can happen, but. More often than not, it doesn't.

None of which takes anything away from the Packers total dominance today!

It is hard to win in the NFL. Teams that finish 10-6 are real good. And even teams who win just 6 or 7 can be real good home teams. Division games are always tough. So one should never take anything for granted. That is why scoring 276 points in the last 7 games and going 6-1 is really impressive by this team.

Packers are very good, Eagles are a mirage with a very weak schedule and several lucky breaks. Not hard to see that, even before the beatdown. Glad everyone is now on board with what I've said all year. This team can play with anyone and will be the NFC champ. Could be a SB preview in 2 weeks.

I agree with your statements. But at the same time, it will be hard to get into the NFC playoffs this year. 11-5 is needed unfortunately. Because that ridiculous NFC South winner may only need 6 wins. And they get a home game in the playoffs. Ludicrous. Packers will get into the playoffs, but if we finish as a wild card, they may have to travel to New Orleans again. I do believe in the NFC North title again, though.

I remember 1995 when we had a real good team and lost in Tampa, who were last in the division. I am agreeing with you that I would only see 2 more losses at most on paper, yet at the same time, one never knows what happens, injuries, bad calls, etc. Division games are always tough, no matter how bad the other teams is that year. But I simply cannot see a worse record than 10-6 this year...

Barring an injury to ARod they're not losing to Minny in any way, shape, or form.

I think with SF and Seattle sitting at 6-4. And our favorable remaining schedule. We should b able too run the table. And Detroit has to go N.E.next week, and we have them at home last game. it's looking good for a deep run into the playoffs.

They will be favored in each of their remaining 6 games, I think. But 8 in a row is an awfully long streak in the NFL. Look at NO game. They are proving to be not so unbeatable in a dome. But the Packers were riding high for a long time going in and were due for a clunker.

It helps that their 2 toughest remaining opponents are in Lambeau, where Matt Flynn is getting significant PT due to blowouts. But I won't be surprised it they go 5-1, or even 4-2 over their last six. And I won't over-react to those losses, either. In fact, I'd hate to be riding an 8 game win streak into the playoffs. That whole "due for a clunker" thing and all. I'd rather get that out of the way in December, say at Buffalo, than in January where it means setting up tee times.

Just get to the playoffs, then unleash the playmakers to do their thing. Any seed from 1 to 6 works fine for me. I'll take my chances with the way they are playing in all 3 phases, home or road. They can beat anyone, any time, any where. They just need to execute on gameday.

Yeah, they're definitely gonna lose in Buffalo. It'll be cold and windy, they'll have a couple miscues, and Buffalo is pretty good on D.

I do love how many cold weather games they're going to play leading up to the season's end though. I think Tampa is the only game left that won't be really effing cold. That bodes well if they get a couple of home playoff games. I think acclimation to the elements is something they've lacked in previous years with all of the dome and warm-weather games late in the season. I know they've had a couple of frigid games in Chicago and at home here and there, but nothing like the stretch they're going to be on until the playoffs this season. It takes more than one week to get used to it.

Assuming things continue as they have for both teams, there would be little reason to pick Buffalo in that game. But inexplicably odd outcomes happen all the time in the NFL. That old saying "Any given Sunday" didn't get to be old by rarely being applicable.

You'd have to think so...but damn, who knows. They're defying all logic.

Seahawks twice, @ SF, @ Rams, Chiefs...that's a tough slate (plus Atl).

If they went 4-2 or even 3-3 down the stretch I would be damn impressed.

That's a brutal schedule. If they hang on to it, they certainly will have deserved it!

If we must travel, I would rather play in Zona than SF or Seattle.

SF doesn't scare me any. Kaepernick has been so good against slow, heavy footed ILBs. That's not Clay Matthews.

Their D is darn good. I saw some of that game today. That D makes them hard to beat. I think they'll go 5-1 or 4-2 the rest of the way. On the positive side, they'll beat up the rest of the NFC West then...

Considering all the big defensive plays the Pack made in this game my favorite was stopping them inside the 10 with a few minutes left in the game. I hate garbage time TD's. It seemed important for that group to stop them and they did. Liked the emotion there.

Hope CM3 didn't tweak his hammy on his double jump move. Seemed like he did, but he did go back in. With his play inside we can't afford to lose him. The whole D looks rejuvenated with him inside. I know CM3 prefers OLB but he can rank up there with the Kuechlys and Willises if he can stay healthy. He was born to chase people down.

What a great game. And another game with a play like the Lacy run that bodes well for the stretch run, cold weather games... Nothing but good things to look forward to. They are good enough to win it all. What more can we really ask for.

3 telling signs of a Super Bowl team

Special teams TDs
Defensive TDs
Back-up QB mop up duty

Reminds me a bit of '96 when McMahon was appearing regularly, Howard was a ST demon and Butler was perfecting the Lambeau Leap.

I agree with the comment about special teams - both against Chicago and 3 times this game - special teams have screwed up big time. It is easy when the games are a blow out to dismiss these incidents - but we need to focus on these issues and make sure that they dont occur when the games are more competitive. After watching the Pats demolish the Colts - I sure hope that it is colder than Hades when they come to town. We are going to need every edge to beat these guys - even though we got blown out the last time Brady played us at Lambeau. I think that we match up better this time.

I love this Packers team. They're more exciting than they have been the last few years.

The problem that everyone seems to forget when there's wins though, is that we do poor against good-to-great QB's. We are 0-3 against teams with these QB's this year -- Seahawks, Saints, Lions.

Our confidence levels will be through the roof by the end of the season, seeing as we don't have more than two tough games on the rest of the schedule. But I think that our defense and/or special teams will blow up in our face and we'll be one and done in the playoffs.

I love the Packers. I dislike Cow. I love Rodgers, TT, McCarthy. But our defense always looks really good against mediocre QB's, then we crash and burn against good-to-great QB's.

When was the last time we beat a team with an elite QB in regular season? (the likes of Big Ben, Brady, Peyton, Brees, Luck, Russell)... Week 4 in 2012, against Brees.

Just wish we had a different defensive coordinator. We've had so many talent come through those doors on defense but we seemingly can never put a long run of good defensive play together... Last time we did that, we went to the Superbowl. We can do it again. Even this year. But I'm skeptical.

So what you're saying is, the last time they beat one of those QBs you arbitrarily assigned was the last season in which Aaron played more than 9 games.

Not many question Jay Cutler's talent. Or the skill position talent that surrounds him. Yet that Packers consistently force him in to crushing mistakes, including twice this year. Because he's been "Bad Jay" so often vs GB, we tend to discount the accomplishment of beating him like a drum. Tony Romo could be described the same way and the Packers beat him without Rodgers last year. Matt Ryan was another QB that lost to the Rodgers-less Packers last season. Cam Newton didn't look so hot vs GB this year. Any one of those three are right there with Stafford and Wilson, IMO.

Aside from that, they beat Stafford just last year in Lambeau. So if that guy is one that is held up as an example of the caliber of QB that the Packers can't beat, we don't have to go back to 2012 to find an example. Even this year when the Packers lost to Stafford, it can hardly be pinned on poor defense. Those guys forced turnovers and held Detroit in check. The offense stunk on ice that day.

The key to playing pass defense is pass rush. If you can put heat on the QB with 4 guys, you have a chance. If you need to send 5 and 6 to make the QB uncomfortable, you're creating holes for him to exploit.

The Packers have plenty of pass rushers to get heat without sending extra guys. They have the secondary talent to feast on errant, rushed throws.
