From the Press Box: Turkey Games on Turkey Day

Garda talks about the lousy Thanksgiving games and a little about whether or not there are any divisions in the NFC which are already decided.

It seems as though tuning into a game on a day other than on Sunday is a dicey thing. For every good game you get, there's five terrible games.

This week, we got three bad games in one day.

In no way were Lions-Bears, Eagles-Cowboys or Seahawks-Niners competetive games. On paper, they should have been (well, maybe not Lions-Bears), but in execuion they were anything but. The Cowboys looked like they do every December, and we should have seen it coming because they couldn't put down the New York Giants the weekend before, and this was a short week.

Seattle hasn't been a great road team this season, but then again, the Niners haven't exactly been playing light's out football either. At its heart, Seattle's defense remains potent, so we shouldn't have been shocked by the outcome of this game given that the San Francisco offense has been inconsistent (that's being kind, because I am still in a good mood from ingesting copious amounts of turkey).

Since we're here, I suppose we'll talk Chicago.

This team is awful. And I know Packers fans around here will shout "duh" or "Bears still suck" but seriously, this was a team which at least had a tremendous offense last season. The defense was abyssmal, but the offense kept them afloat. this season, not only is the defense is awful, but the offense is a disaster. Not always perhaps but far too often.

The NFC North will, as we assumed before the Turkey Bowl, come down to the Week 17 game betweeen the Lions and Packers.

The NFC East isn't decided yet either, but will probably come down to the rematch between Dallas and Philly on December 14.

The NFC West is probably close to done, although if Arizona manages to find a way to lose to Atlanta (I almost couldn't finish typing that sentence), Seattle has a chance to make it interesting.

The NFC South ... well, does anyone care? Seriously, this division is likely to keep a much more deserving team out of the playoffs. I don't think the way the NFL determines who makes the playoffs should change—I wouldn't want an NBA or NHL where it's all one big mish-mosh and most of the teams make it in. However, seeing a sub-.500 team make the playoffs—as rare as that is—is going to hurt.

Will it hurt less if Atlanta or Carolina goes on a run in the playoffs? Maybe, but it's going to really be a bummer for a team like Dallas or Detroit or Seattle when they have to watch from the couch.

We'll take a full look at the playoff race next week, after we suffer through another lousy Thursday night game.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
