Former Packers DL C.J. Wilson Signs with Raiders

Wilson joins wide receiver James Jones as the latest free agent to leave Green Bay for Oakland.

Former Green Bay Packers defensive lineman C.J. Wilson signed with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent, the team announced on Friday.

Wilson is the fourth free agent to leave the Packers this offseason, joining wide receiver James Jones and offensive linemen Evan Dietrich-Smith and Marshall Newhouse.

Signed by Raiders general manager and former Packers executive Reggie McKenzie, Wilson joins several former players with Green Bay ties on the Oakland roster, including Jones and defensive back Charles Woodson.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Depending on the size of the contract, Wilson may or may not count in the compensatory draft pick formula the NFL uses to award teams that lose more unrestricted free agents than they sign.

Joining the Packers as a seventh round draft choice in 2010, Wilson spent all four seasons of his career in Green Bay. He played in 50 regular games, starting 11 in that span and was actually a starter in Super Bowl XLV team.

Despite having 27 career sacks in college, Wilson never materialized as a pass rusher in the NFL, but he did make major strides in defending the run. Wilson went from starting eight games for the Packers defense in 2012 to zero in 2013 and played in just eight despite being largely healthy, becoming the odd man out.

The Packers did not seem to make much of an effort to re-sign Wilson and appear to be going in a different direction on their defensive line. Fellow defensive linemen Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly also remain unsigned on the free agent market.

Meanwhile, the Packers re-signed B.J. Raji with the intention of moving him to nose tackle and also added free agent Letroy Guion to the mix. Julius Peppers was signed as well, making him a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker.

Chris Clemons signed with Houston. Two years, $2.7. Not much for a guy who started for the last two years. Hard to see how he would not have been a decent insurance policy at that price. I'm sure it ups the odds of adding a safety high in the draft this year, but as many have stated here before, S is very mental, and it takes a few years to fully develop.

Somethings rotten in Denmark with this guy. Miami took a always injured Delmas and let Clemons walk? No one touch him for weeks.

You are right, but no one wanted Charles Woodson either. Said he was a malcontent, etc.

The price will be way to high, unless there's something really wrong with him.

Hi Tom B. I agree with you on that 100%. I also agree with 4thand1. I don't think GB will lay out the money for him. Not sure he'd take a 1 yr deal?
