Cowboys vs. Packers: Saturday Scoop

It's 11 months almost to the day that the Green Bay Packers beat the Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field in the divisional round of the playoffs and earned a trip to the NFC championship game.  Tomorrow, the Cowboys are back and looking for a big upset win and exact some revenge for that loss.  All week long, we have been subjected to the highlight of Dallas receiver Dez Bryant's non-catch near the end of last year's playoff game that gave the ball back to the Packers and allowed Green Bay to run out the clock and get the win.  Many have debated whether the play should have been ruled a catch or not but in the end, it was not and the Cowboys were sent packing.

The Cowboys are coming off of a big win on Monday Night Football against their division rivals, the Washington Redskins.  Dallas comes into tomorrow's game with one less day of rest and preparation, having played on Monday.  Other than that, the Cowboys are one of the healthiest teams in the league at this point, with only quarterback Tony Romo listed as out against the Packers.  On the Green Bay side, there are a few notable names listed as either doubtful or questionable.  Center Corey Linsley is listed as doubtful and it appears that J.C. Tretter will get another start in Linsley's place.  Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga (ankle), receiver Ty Montgomery (ankle) and linebacker Nick Perry (shoulder) are listed as questionable, giving each a 50% chance of playing tomorrow.  If Bulaga can't go, the Packers will be without two of their starting offensive line that began the season.  Don Barclay would most likely start in Bulaga's place.  Tretter has held up fairly well in relief of Linsley.  Barclay has not held up much at all in any situation.  Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers looks to be on the move quite a bit and once again.

The Packers have lost their last two straight at home and look to end that streak tomorrow against Dallas.  It's certainly a game the Packers should win, but they should also have beaten the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.  Nothing can be taken for granted with this year's Packers team.  At this point, the Packers lead the NFC North division and would be the third seed in the NFC if the season ended today.  Ahead of them are the Arizona Cardinals at 11-2 and the Carolina Panthers at 12-0.  The Panthers have already clinched a postseason spot and the Packers can't overtake them for the top seed in the conference.  As for the Cardinals and the two seed, Green Bay would need to essentially win their remaining four games, including against the Cardinals in Arizona and hope that the Cards lose one other game along the way.  Beating Arizona on the road is a tall task for this year's Packers team, however, the Minnesota Vikings were within a long field goal try of taking the Cardinals to overtime before Arizona secured the win on a sack to end the game.  Difficult, but not impossible.  As I went through many different scenarios on the ESPN playoff machine, it seems that the most likely spot for the Packers is the third seed, where they currently sit.  That would give Green Bay at least one home game in the wild card round.

As we enter December, we're reminded that historically, the Packers have played some of their best football during that month.  After the Cowboys, the Packers travel to Oakland to face the Raiders followed by a road game at Arizona and then the season finale at home against the Vikings.  Depending how the next three games shake out, that week 17 game against Minnesota could be for the NFC North.  As I begin to get optimistic about the December trend, I remind myself that the Packers lost a home game to the Lions for the first time in 24 years so that trend means little this season.  That they followed it up with a loss to the Bears on a night when Bart Starr and Brett Favre were on the field does absolutely nothing for confidence going into this matchup with Dallas.

My gut feeling of the week is that Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has a big day.  He's a guy who is still every effective and one of Cowboys quarterback Matt Cassel's favorite targets.  It would seem that the Packers should have a sound plan in place to slow Witten but I can see him shrewdly tearing up the middle of the defense and converting first down after first down.  It's that type of player who can keep drives alive for the opposing offense, eat clock and take away valuable snaps from the Green Bay offense.

My other gut is that the Packers do everything they can to get running back Eddie Lacy going.  Lacy has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff after missing curfew before last week's game against the Lions and much has been said about what's going on with Lacy and the Packers.  Both sides want to put it all behind them and a big day from #27 would start that process.  Lacy had run for over 100 yards in the previous two games before being benched for the first quarter in Detroit.  With it being colder, it's time for the Packers to amp up the run game and give the backs more carries.  Expect to see a good amount of James Starks and a few more carries for John Crockett as well.

On the defensive side, the Packers have to keep the pressure on Cassel.  They'll get cornerback Damarious Randall back and if they can force Cassel to move and dump the ball off, they can steal a possession or two.  The Cowboys don't have many quarterback sacks, but if the Packers are missing two starting linemen, that could mean little this week.

Bottom line, this isn't a "must win" for the Packers, but they really need to win the rest of their games to go into the playoffs with the appropriate amount of confidence to carry them through.  Green Bay also needs to remind themselves that they can win games at home.  That sounds very odd to write and say, but it's become a situation where until they get it done at Lambeau, there will be questions about how off their game the Packers have fallen.

The cowboys have one day less from playing Monday night but the packers are an extra four days ahead from playing an early Thursday game. Its been a long ten days. I can't wait.

The Panthers are 12-0.

I think Lacy has some mental issues in addition to mentioned physical ones.

When you are struggling and then you miss curfew you are saying to your coaching staff and teammates, "I don't give a shit".

I hope he has been read the riot act or given some psychological counseling or at least something to energize him positively.

The big question for the rest of the season is "Which Packer team shows up?"

Over the last 10 seasons, no one would have predicted the possibility of the Packers having a chance of losing 3 straight home games to 3 losing teams, two of them in the same division. Either the "Hail Mary" is the spring board into the playoffs or Dandy Don sings "Turn Out The Lights The Party Is Over", this game will gauge the entire season. Lets hope it is the spring board.

John's right, either this team starts to play like we all thought they'd play, or they continue to wobble to another one and done. I said earlier in the week if the hail mary to Rodgers doesn't jump start those players hearts, then nothing will.

I also think if the Packers can't get it going and continue to play like this, it's time for change. There's a few things IMO that could be happening before our eyes.

1) McCarthy's meesage has grown stale and old, 10 years is a long time.
2) Defenses have completely figured out MM offense and the adjustments he makes if any. I mean some games you'd have thought they were in the Packers huddle the call is so predictable.
3) The team just isnt't THAT talented. Ted T has blown a ton of picks over the years. I understand nobody hits them all, but maybe Rodgers isn't able to cover up all the weak spots on this team anymore at 32.

Players not plays. You see guys not winning the one on ones, blowing assignments, dropping balls. This team is young and the o-line is banged up. No speed is a killer, mainly on offense. The lack of the big play is missing. When you can't put a defense on it's heels it's hard to execute. Even when Jordy was playing you'd see the offense sputter for a quarter or two, but usually they had a lead. I've said this time and time again, Ty Montgomery was a huge loss. He was getting better every game. Over and over Adams was targeted and it didn't work. MM wants 70+ plays a game and they don't come close with so many 3 and outs. The defense deserves a lot of credit for keeping them in games. The running game has to work and the drops have to stop. Right now they control their own destiny, and we'll see what this team really is over the next 4 games.

Montgomery was a huge loss because he actually blocked. The blocking is what makes this passing game.

So the entire program went bad in the course of one offseason?

The Packers went from having the talent. coaching, and playbook to be a leading offense and nearly reach the superbowl, to being not that talented, out of touch, and having a lousy offense that's figured out... over the course of one offseason?

That doesn't seem likely. Let's see what the rest of the season holds, and furthermore, what next season looks like before we rip apart the whole thing. I have a feeling getting healthy and building a little confidence is going to go a long way to making the Packers look like the Packers again. Maybe even a shift in play calling duties- I do think the Packers sorely miss MM's play calling.

I agree with Oppy. The Packers scored the most points in the league last year. They have the same people sans Jordy. The only difference is who's calling the plays. Tom Clements did the same thing in Buffalo and was a miserable failure. I still think I saw MM holding highlighted play sheets in his hand at the end of the Detroit game. I believe he was calling the plays at the end. There could be a disturbance in the force and Darth Cow could be right.

Great comment Oppy. Could not have said it better!

Get healthy and some momentum and this team can still make a run. We'll see how it turns out, but either way starting over w/ a new coaching staff, probably different systems and learning new schemes is a sure way to F up the remainder of Rodgers career. McCarthy is a top 5-7 HC and it is FAR more likely they get worse coaching than better.

Nick great post! The Packers have been hurting in the Linebacker Department for years now and the fact that Ted Thompson didn't see a promising prospect like Chris Borland drafted by the 49'ers in the second round has me scratching my head! I know Borland walked away from the game but it still surprised me.

Yeah that Borland pick turned out great for SF didn't it? Ryan is going to be a better ILB than Borland might have been in the long run anyway. Seems to me, Thompson made the better of it.

Yea it easier to digest since Borland got spooked and quit. I like Ryan and I will keep my fingers crossed. Maybe Ted T has a Crystal Ball!

Borland had too many injury issues in college. NFL was only going to make them worse. Especially concussions.

Sorry Nick, I didn't know you have been in the locker room to hear McCarthy's message first hand. What exactly was his message?

Defenses have figured out that the Packers don't have a legit deep threat. Nothing more. Not to difficult to figure out really. W/o the deep threat teams are crowding the receivers keeping them from getting into their routes, the WR have struggled ALL year trying to get any seperation and there are more players in the box to stop the run. This is all Football 101 kinda stuff. Jordy has turned out to be more important to this team than anyone thought. Without him, Cobb is getter more and better attention. Adams is still learning how to run routes and win his matchups consistently and against better CB than he ever saw last year. Jones was a nice pickup, but has next to nothing left, except that Rodgers trusts him. None of that suggest that teams have figured out how to beat McCarthy's offense.

This is a must win for pride's sake alone. The Lions game was one of those clunker games and Detroit was going to win at Lambeau eventually. Not that I was OK with that but Detroit was playing better at that point. The Bears game was a different story. That was disgraceful considering Starr made it to the game but the team didn't. So to now lose to Dallas is unthinkable. To lose 3 in a row at home would be embarrassing. I have been a fan for decades and can no longer remember when the last time that happened. I'm pretty sure it did, but do not want to see it happen again and certainly not to Dallas. Bears loss was painful enough. GO PACK GO

I think Witten has a big day, since we've always had trouble covering TE's with our linebackers. Nonetheless, without DeMarco Murray or Romo, this should be a GB win.

If Mikes game plan is to rely on Lacy, season is over, it will take a team , all 53 players, playing at the best of their abilities, Lacy mind and commitment is not football this year, if Mike puts the ball in Lacy's hands, the remaining 52 players will not be inspired to give it their all, next man up

Name any other player outside of Harris and Lacy who missed curfew this year that we all know about.

You can't.

So, yeah, he knows that, the players know it. the coaches know it and the opposition knows it. When you are struggling you try to improve - you don't blatantly miss curfew.

Been in the military? I have. You don't sleep on guard duty.

I haven't been in the military, and even I know that football can not be, and should not be, related to the military in terms of importance.

Eddy Lacy missing a 9 pm curfew at a hotel in detroit the day before a night game isn't something the team should take lightly, but I don't think there's a single player on the roster that would liken it to 'sleeping while on guard duty'.

Of course, I wouldn't have believed there was a single military man who would have likened it to sleeping while on guard duty either, but, there you are.

Heard McCarthy talked to Saban and was told to take the game away from Eddie if you want to get him to play harder and better. Pretty sure that happened last week. Lacy is going to start this week from what I see. I don't think they will rely on Lacy for much other than to provide a running game. This will be a Team Win!

Saturday Scoop? Where's the scoop in this article? None. People are still psychoanalyzing Eddie Lacy, replacing Tom Clements, and whining about not drafting Chris Borland. No scoop here folks, but everyone's excited about another big game in the slop at Lambeau. This team has more excuses than talent. This could be the worst 12-4 team or more likely a so-so 8-8 team come January 3rd. Let's hope and pray, stay positive, things will click, we'll find our identity. I predict Jeff Janis will have a huge day and the Packers will win big! Go Pack Go! This team can be great again!
