Cory's Corner: Bringing Aaron Rodgers Back Is A Cooperative Decision

The Packers and Rodgers must have an understood marriage if he is to come back to Green Bay for his 19th season.

The calendar has flipped to the third month of the year and we are still talking about a certain No. 12.

I’ve said it before. I think Rodgers can still play. There may be some that will disagree with me on this, but I think he can still lead the Packers to an NFC title. And yes, I know he’s 39 and turns the ripe old 40 on Dec. 2.

But his feet were heavy last year. One of the best things that Rodgers does is throw on the run. He has been one of the greatest when things around him are falling apart. The pocket is collapsing and he is able to somehow find someone. I think Rodgers is still able to pull rabbits out of hats like he did in Dallas to win the NFC Divisional Round playoff on Jan. 15, 2017.

But in order for that to happen, there needs to be a marriage from both sides. It is no longer OK for Rodgers to skip minicamps or OTAs and just wing it with young wideouts — and then blame those said wideouts when things go sideways. He’s scheduled to make $59.5 million in 2023. For that kind of money, the Packers deserve a quarterback that’s present. The Packers need 100 percent focus on the Packers. That means doing the extra stuff. You don’t have to hang around Green Bay, but informally throwing to a trio of wideouts in the offseason would go a long way to improving offensive chemistry.

Of course the knife cuts both ways. The Packers have to prove that they are all-in as well. The Sammy Watkins addition was arguably the biggest free agent splash the Packers made this past offseason, and he was released in Week 15. The Packers cannot nickel and dime their way to another title. They have now restructured the contracts of Aaron Jones, Jaire Alexander, Preston Smith and Kenny Clark — saving them over $38 million. If the players didn’t think they could win, they wouldn’t have an incentive to restructure their deals. The key is to put that money to use. The Packers could use a field stretcher like wideout D.J. Chark and it’s worth asking 33-year-old Patrick Peterson if he’s willing to play safety — a switch that reminds me of a certain Packers player that is now in the Packers Ring of Honor. Another name that intrigues me is defensive end Samson Ebukam. He played only 59 percent of the 49ers’ defensive snaps last year and still tallied 15 quarterback pressures.

Let’s face it, winning windows in the NFL are short. You have to capitalize when superior talent aligns with a winning culture. The Packers currently have that right now.

But if the Packers aren’t willing to go for it and get necessary pieces — that of course does not mean another Watkins signing — then the Packers have to move on and build future assets.

Obviously, bringing Rodgers back again would mean that Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is admitting a mistake by trading up for a quarterback that has never seen meaningful playing time. Ego should not be at the center of this decision, but we’re all human. It’s hard not to attach an ego value to a decision that polarized so many fans and media.

But this decision should be simple and needs to be a cooperative one. If Rodgers agrees to come back, then he has to know that expectations will be raised. He needs to not only put in the work for himself but he needs to put in the work for his receiving corps. And the Packers cannot be satisfied with just adding guys. They need to keep evolving, must be dynamic and find more ways to utilize speed — on offense and defense.

So you're saying you want the exact definition of insanity?

Great! SMH

His feet aren't going to be any less heavy this year...

You think AR12 is actually going to change this year? Maybe in another dimension. Maybe.

If Gutey brings back AR12 it will be at the direction of "We're not idiots!" Murphy, and he will never admit to making a mistake in drafting Love.

Cory - I realize you have to write something, but to think AR12 is going to change now is delusional...

Why should he? He's not the guy bringing in stiffs like Amari Rodgers, or dropping his passes consistently on third down conversions. The Money deal was on Management. They set the parameters. Where was the pass rush replacement for Zadarious? Karlaftis vs a chase LB who cannot plug the A gaps ? We have been searching for a valid #2 WR since Jordy left town.

Serious Question - When was the last time we had a true #1 WR?

We've had lots of guys who filled the role, but I would argue none of them were true #1 WRs...

This Edge class might be the best in a very long time.

Lets hope AR12 has seen the light and decided to take his "act" to Vegas for a bunch of draft picks... (Or anywhere else for that matter.)

No hes just responsible for bringing in an old and expensive stiff like Randall Cobb and keeping other old and expensive stiffs around like Lewis, Crosby, Tonyan, etc. Amari never got a fair shake in GB and 12 is the biggest reason for it.

Amon-Ra St Brown would have moved Cobb or Lazard off the roster and saved Money. Gutedkunst brought in Watkins, another retread.

I don't think it's hard to convince guys to restructure their contract to give them most of the money up front. It only makes sense to have those millions in the bank building interest now rather than later.

Getting speed on defense is great. It would be even better if that speed was working together in the right places instead of running fast in circles with Barry's soft coverages. Adding Samson Ebukam or any help to Clark and the rotation is the main way to help the DBs. Solid line play on both sides is all you need to improve this team.

It did look like Rodgers was running on blocks of wood last season. I remember how my old coach used to fix that and discipline us. Run the stairs (after some laps, of course). Couple hours of that a day might make him lighter on the feet. Might make it more fun to just practice too. If he really wants to be part of the team they should have to make him go home, and be hard to force him not to want to be around the guys all the time.

Clark just got $13.88M up front instead of piecemeal. 1% of that is $139K. Should be able to get 4% anywhere and over 6% in a brokerage account (no doubt some financial advisors out there can plug in the correct numbers). That's $834K instead of investing some money starting in September. He won't clear $834K but it is still a chunk of change.

Rodgers can only change if he WANTS to change. And even if he does, Gutekunst sure seemed to signal this past week that the Packers are done with him.

There wasn't any "we're all in on Rodgers. He's our guy. He'll take us to a Super Bowl." No. It was about Jordan Love and how ready he is to take the reins.

When Adams got traded and Rodgers knew he was going to have to work with young receivers, he didn't bother working with them. He got the Packers to bow and sign this stupid contract (which he knew was going to gobble up a huge chunk of the cap) -- and would only require him to show up for just THREE freaking days of offseason workouts to earn his $50K bonus.

That just happened last year. I'm not convinced that 4 days in the dark has made him suddenly realize that he needs to take a pay cut to give the team a shot to sign some other guys and make another run.

The time to do that passed long ago. Since Rodgers won't change, that's why we're overdue to move on from him.

Watson was out 3 games, but had an All Rookie team year with 611 yards and 7 TDs via the pass, two on the end arounds. Doubs missed four game, but still trucked 425 yards and 3 TDs. Almost the same as the production lost by Adams' absence. I do not see the validity of any rookie abuse, or the shunning.
Two sides conduct Negotiations on any Deal. The Management set the parameters. They had a few suitors to maximize HIS trade value, if the front office chose to move in an alternative direction. The Stockholm Syndrome is affecting the fans.

Did he work with the WRs in the offseason though? Did he show up for optional work-outs where he could've started building chemistry with him? He didn't.

The front office shares some of the blame for agreeing to this contract when they knew it was not sustainable over time. In addition, Gutekunst should've traded Rodgers a year ago. I was in the minority on here for that option.

When has Rodgers restructured in the past?

Question. Did the Voluntary OTAs have the expanded playbook which is usually Installed during Summer Session? Did the Greenhorns know any of the Playbook when they showed up for the first, 4-day orientation session in shorts & tees to stretch out and lift weights? The second voluntary session they tossed it around, but the development time was best served for Love to get his reps. The Mandatory Camp, Rodgers showed up for duty.
Some of these dudes work out together in Southern Cal. Not an Issue.

admittedly, my memory is suspect, but I used to remember Ted Thompson talking about prospects who "loved football". Can anyone objectively say, having watched Aaron Rodgers for the last 5 years, that he loves football. When he talks about football it's with nostalgia, being around the guys, the memories. He's more likely to talk about an A-List girlfriend, and psychedelic experience, hell, chemtrails. it's not football that he loves, it's the spotlight, and he probably likes that money too.

anyway, corey, my point is people don't get personality transplants. project anything you'd like onto the situation, but i'll go with the evidence of my eyes. this is the aaron rodgers that will return to green bay, should he return. his only hope for a different outcome in football is if he goes somewhere else, a new culture, a new challenge. he may well win somewhere else, maybe even a super bowl. but he isn't doing that in green bay, there's no "all in" in aaron rodgers anymore, at least not in green bay.

Even if Rodgers does go to, say, the Jets, that team is going to demand him to be present. He has to be there in the offseason for minicamps and OTAs. And we all know it's a lot harder transitioning to something new, so if you're being expected to be present, you might as well be present for the team you know really well.

also, in my experience it's much easier to transition to something new in a new zip code, with new characters around you. that's how change actually happens. otherwise routine kicks in.

Have you considered that if a trade is done post June 1..., that he would be a member of the Packers from now until then? Aren't there some OTAs and minicamps between now and June 1?

As part of a cooperative agreement with the team, they could exempt him from these activities pending the trade that both parties need. That would give him until July.

Cory.....the Packers are moving on with Love. We could construct a million scenarios to the contrary, but every piece of actual evidence shows an organization that's been planning this change for a long time and they think they're ready to make the switch.

Wishful thinking. Rodgers should have been all in last year. The Packers and Rodgers need a split. It will be good for both parties.

We won't know until the 15th. Just like last year. A trade will be made, draft picks will be gotten, Rodgers will renegotiate his contract and everyone will move on. The scab will be torn off.

I hope it happens this way. The Packers will build a team around Love and we all will be interested again for next year.

Rodgers should have been all-in the year that the Packers fired MM and hired a new coaching staff and Murphy told Rodgers "Don't be the problem".

What did Rodgers do? Openly defied his new coaches both in pressers and on the field of play.

Then, for reasons beyond comprehension, someone in the organization decided to give Rodgers $150-$200 Million guaranteed.. and I guess they expected that would make Rodgers go "all in"?

Of course it didn't happen. Leopards and spots, and all that.

I hope it does happen that way. I just don't have any confidence that the front office will actually do the right thing for the team. Someone in the organization is scared to death of what national sports writers might say if they get rid of their second HoF QB in a row before they retire.

I never understood this “putting the band back together “ mentality when it it obviously wasn’t working if the goal was to win a Super Bowl or, at least, get deep in the playoffs. Then. I read the stuff about Murphy retiring in two years and it made perfect sense. Murphy is petrified that the Titanic will sink on his watch and, to prevent this, he is content to use a ton of bubblegum to patch the holes and keep the thing above water until he can get in his lifeboat and sail off to wherever multimillionaires go to retire these days. The next team president can go down with the ship when all the old players fade away and the cap hell finally descends on the franchise.

"I’ve said it before. I think Rodgers can still play. There may be some that will disagree with me on this, but I think he can still lead the Packers to an NFC title."

I still think Rodgers can play too Cory, but I think a NFC Title is a little bit of a reach. Matter of fact I'm not so sure Love couldn't lead the Packers just as far. God knows those heavy feet aren't part of Loves game! BUT, what I keep coming back to, NO MATTER WHAT, is the cap ramifications for 2024 and beyond. If EVER there was a time to trade Rodgers other than last season, it is NOW. I didn't think it was going to be possible but there's still a market for him so take advantage of it.

"But in order for that to happen, there needs to be a marriage from both sides. It is no longer OK for Rodgers to skip minicamps or OTAs and just wing it with young wideouts — and then blame those said wideouts when things go sideways."

I'm about 90% certain this wouldn't happen but I suppose there's a chance. Just like there's a chance I'll hit the Mega Millions Lottery one day. But even if it did so what. The dude is talking about retirement and has been for 2 or 3 years. IF you're talking about retirement and doing it EVERY year, you're already half way there. Just the idea of having 2nd thoughts on playing or not, retiring or not, tells me you're NOT 100% in.

I heard something on a podcast the other day that made be think. I believe it was when the host was talking about what Gute had said Tuesday I believe it was. He said, "I haven't talked to Aaron Rodgers yet". But when asked about Love he said, "We talk or text EVERY DAY".

CLEARLY our GM, the one who should be making ALL the decisions on the team says something like that, it's pretty telling where he is on the whole Rodgers/Love thing.

It's okay folks. RIP the band-aide off. I think the bleeding will be a lot, lot less than you think once Rodgers is gone, and if it isn't, you have more draft picks to work with. Maybe a player too.

Rodgers doesn’t need to change.
Gutey Does. MLF does. The Team does.
We saw the bad Routes.
The wasted Time off the clock.
The Drops. The Fumbles.
The OL struggles. A vet WR released.
The Defense that couldn’t get stops.
(Putting them out of the playoffs.)
Rodgers has seen too many come and go.
And the players coming in just aren’t good enough.
Why wouldn’t he be frustrated with everyone.
We listen to Gutey. MLF. The Lies.
Rodgers see it on the field. At Practice. The Film.
And he isn’t going to be brought down to their level.
If Rodgers leaves. The Losers get their way.
Gutey doesn’t have enough picks to replace what
Will go with him. (As Cory pointed to the windows.)
I point to the poor choices that got us here.
The best free Agent class wasted.
The vital positions drafted years later.
The failure to properly evaluate team stars.
Somebody ran this club for TT.
And I’ll bet Gutey was more than responsible
For telling TT what to do.
He was in charge of scouting.
So lets just get off Rodgers back.
Tell Gutey to screw with somebody else’ mind.
It didn’t start with Rodgers.
The problems were over his head.
Either MLF and his staff get these guys right.
Or fire the GM for his drafting of Jordan Love.

Wow, I'm nearly write-less...

"Rodgers doesn’t need to change."
So, it's okay that he slags off the OTAs, all other off-season activities, doesn't play a down in preseason, expects WRs to learn his hand signals via osmosis, doesn't throw to receivers he doesn't trust, throws others under the bus for his bad decisions - I could go on and on.

"We saw the bad Routes."
Gee, do you think maybe the fact that AR doesn't work with his young receivers could've been a part of that? The rest would be coaching.

"The wasted Time off the clock."
When the QB stands at the LOS for 10 second EACH EFFING PLAY before snapping the ball, a lot of time sure does bleed from the clock. You forgot to mention the wasted timeouts.

"Why wouldn’t he be frustrated with everyone."
He might want to start with being frustrated with his own play, given that he had one of his worst years last season - or like you, does he blame everyone else for his own failings?

"The Defense that couldn’t get stops. / (Putting them out of the playoffs.)"
The offense also couldn't score any points in that game. A defense that gives up 20 points isn't terrible, but an offense that only scores 16 against the worst defense in the league was THE problem with that game. Remind me again - who was the QB on that team? What was the result of his last past in that game?

"Rodgers see it on the field. At Practice. The Film. / And he isn’t going to be brought down to their level."
Does he see his own poor play at practice? During film studies? Does he get the right kind of feedback from Clements? And brought down to what level?

"If Rodgers leaves. The Losers get their way."
Didn't you once write something similar? "If Favre leaves, the Losers get their way." Man up, grow a pair, and accept the change that IS coming. Whether it happens in 23, 24 or 25, Rodgers WILL be gone.

"The best free Agent class wasted."
That class helped to take us to the playoffs in 19, 20, and 21. We should've won it all in 20. I'd really love to know why AR didn't run it into the endzone during that last drive. His Davantae-vision helped lose us that game. It helped us lose to SF in 21.

"The failure to properly evaluate team stars."
Evidence? Whose team's stars? If you mean, giving the most stupid contract in history to an old, demanding QB who just dissed the team, then I agree that they failed to evaluate that particular GB star.

"Somebody ran this club for TT."
Yep, the last couple of years. That was on Murphy, who should've replaced Ted when his problems became obvious. I'd read that Ba'al was in charge, but could be wrong.

"Tell Gutey to screw with somebody else’ mind."
Gutey's not the one screwing with AR's mind - it's been the other way around for years now. And those of us based in reality are sick to shit of it.

"It didn’t start with Rodgers. / The problems were over his head."
The start of this shitshow did NOT start with Rodgers (I'd put the beginning with TT's declining health, exacerbated by Murphy assuming dictatorial powers after that). Rodgers isn't the problem, really, he's the malignant symptom.

"Or fire the GM for his drafting of Jordan Love."
And the "snapper" as Mark Twain would've called it. Gotta get your racist boogie on, don't you?

Yes. We had a good team in 2021 when he trashed the front office right before the draft, starting this shitshow. Remember that? Hellooooo stocholder! This is Reality calling! Do you recognize me?

The Love pick is widely credited as the reason AR got his mojo back and won two MVPs, so no, it wasn't the wrong pick. Had Jefferson still been on the board, then yes, they should've (and reports have said, would've) picked him. But he wasn't so Gutekunst moved us into a possible future. Won't you look stupid when Love lights up the league in a couple of years. I can actually read your future post when his new team destroys the Packers:

Gutey traded Love.
Destroyed our future.
Wasting three years of training.

""The best free Agent class wasted."
That class helped to take us to the playoffs in 19, 20, and 21. We should've won it all in 20. I'd really love to know why AR didn't run it into the endzone during that last drive. His Davantae-vision helped lose us that game. It helped us lose to SF in 21."

I enjoyed and agreed with the whole comment Jurp, but this spoke to me the loudest. It amazes me some still folks continue to believe Rodgers gives the Packers the best chance to win. Did they WATCH those two playoff loses. Did they watch the 2 LOSSES against Detroit this year.

We've watched it the LAST 3 YEARS Rodgers can't get it done. Best chance MY ASS! How does anyone really know? Like me, they have NO IDEA about what Love can do, but I know what I've read and what I saw against the Eagles. This kid is just going to get better. Just ask Darius Slay the Eagles CB who stated after Love almost brought the Packers back, Love was really good. That wasn't a prevent according to Slay, yet some here insist it was.

The Last 3 years says it all. Let go and let Gute!

Nick, go to 2014 NFCCG. Look mr. Perfect, aka Choker how he played. He had 5 times ball inside 15 yards of end zone as gift from Packers D and ST. He was able to score 1 TD and "lead" Packers to 2 FG. All in first half. Instead of at least 3 TD and 3 FG, which will gave Packers 30 to 0 advantage. No one would come back from that. He played like shit. In every meaningfull game he shit his pants and he will never be able to jump over the hump. Why? Because he shit so much in his pants that become 3× overweight. From that moment he had 3 games in the post season we can call it as good or very good playing from him.

Indeed. That game was the turning point for me. He lost it somewhere after the super bowl victory. For example, he didn’t throw to Sherman’s area of the field. It’s as if being on top made him more timid, more afraid to lose, which ironically, made him more likely to. At any rate, it’s far too late for him to get “it” back.

Oh, how about his RUNNING BACKS? Tight end? Any other WR on the field? How about Cobb - you know, the 6 million dollar man that he forced GB to trade for?

Davantae-vision seemed to have been tied into his well-reported "trust" issues with receivers not named Davantae.

It's the QB's fault when he consistently fails to find open receivers in big games. It is NOT the QB's fault when the game-plan or overall coaching sucks and the QB makes plays. It's the "not making plays" part that drives a lot of us crazy.

I didn't want a vet receiver - I'm actually receiver-agnostic, in that I recognize that the receivers aren't the problem. It's not just Rodgers either - Scooter and his coaches bear responsibility, too - but Rodgers isn't helping himself or team with his play anymore, and he sure didn't help the team then, either.

Correct assessment of the final Ted years. The "ah shucks" point of view may have some reasonable cause for any other team who does not employ a HOF quarterback. Gutey pushed him for the 2017 draft, his guy. He was bouncing around the league as a sp teams guy. I did not detect any rebirth, but Pete Carroll would place him in the correct sets. He knows how to coach secondary play. He had a better year with JAX. Savage is light years better than Jones. He gave him the 5th year option to protect his pick. With Savage playing his best position as a slot CB, he should recover. He has 9 INTs while Jones snagged 1 in six seasons. Gutey has been around since '92 and is still drafting like it.

Don't we also know that Gutsey isn't the decision maker on Arod?
If those two issues are true, we know Arod will be a Packer for another year.
So if I'm the GM and my rep is on the line...I'm drafting big uglies on the oline and dline. RBs that can catch the ball thrown to them, and high picks for safety.

When I was a kid, there was a radio show called The Bickersons (yes, kids, they used to have actual drama and comedy shows on the radio, I kid you not). It was probably on WTMJ-AM. It was supposedly a comedy, IIRC. My dad used to listen to it while shaving or eating breakfast. Anyway, it was really just a couple who, well, bickered constantly, with pointed barbs, hidden insults, what have you. I'm reminded of this show by the behavior of the Packers and Rodgers over the past three years - the snipes, the outright insults (from AR), the convoluted phrasing, back and forth and back and forth and back and...

It was obvious to me as a little kid that The Bickersons needed to get a divorce so that they could each be happy. It's obvious to me as an adult that OUR Bickersons need a divorce.

So many disagreements with this article. Sure, Rodgers could get the team into the playoffs. But the last two times he did this, the results were disappointing. With his contract being what it is, why would Rodgers suddenly feel the need to change anything he has been doing? So, he needs a WR or two he can trust? He had them in Adams and Lazard. He also had a strong running game with Jones and Williams, and when he left, Dillon. Or, as is often pointed out, the under utilized backfield. With all those guys, the Rodgers led offense managed to score one TD in the San Francisco playoff game. But this time will be different. The Packers should (once again) go "all in" to help Rodgers. How many times does the team do this? Especially when it hasn't worked? And if (which is extremely likely under your scenario), the Packers trade Love, where does that leave the team in a year or two? In the QB scramble with a lot of other teams. No, enough is enough. Gutekunst didn't make a mistake in drafting Love. He made his mistake by overpaying to keep Rodgers around, and keep believing this team would somehow, some way, be able to win another SB with Rodgers. But to double and triple down on a losing hand is pure stubbornness, and an inability to even tacitly admit he made a mistake in not taking that huge haul Denver parted with to settle for Russell Wilson.

Too many keep blaming Gutey for not taking the Denver Deal and increasing team captivity in cap hades with Rodgers contract.

ALL this was decided by Murphy, the Acting GM.

I have more belief that Gutey was enamored by the Denver Deal but was vetoed by Murphy with MLF wildly flapping his arms during the Football Committee Meetings to keep Rodgers. Ball no doubt chimed in to tell Murphy "I can get it done with more cap gymnastics. Gutey is not the GM Wolf or TT were...not even close.

It's more than Rodgers grudgingly agreeing to more participation with the team, but a need for a substantial change of attitude on his part.
It seems Rodgers needs a ray of sunlight and a fresh breeze from without to refresh his approach to life, not the dark and stagnant air of a bunker alone with his own stale thoughts.
I'm truly concerned about the guy, and wish him well as a player and a person; but it isn't a help to him to allow him to continue to drag down the Packers in the same old way of self-absorption and self-delusion.
For the good of everyone who cares about the Packers, we need a new beginning right now.

I do wonder how much the ongoing antics of a 39 year old self centered, arrogant multimillionaire increasingly grate on the mostly twenty somethings in the Packer locker room.

So while Rodgers grates, It seems Love has ingratiated himself to his team mates with hard work, leading by example and building relationships.

My sense is Gutey understands this while MLF doesn't. Gutey: "I text or talk to Jordan Love every day" while he has not spoken to Rodgers since he cleaned out his locker in early January.

Sadly, it seems a wasted opportunity by Rodgers to be a mentor, as well as to just be one of the guys, which would seem to be a lot of fun, and highly satisfying, even if just occasionally.
Being part of a team is something really rewarding, as many of us can relate to if only from high school or earlier. It seems a lot of the pros, when they retire, miss the camaraderie as much as the game itself.
I would think that even someone like Rodgers, who may be less gregarious by temperament, may regret not taking advantage of at least some social opportunities with teammates, even if most of them are younger.
***
Also, I wonder if teammates may be understandably unhappy with Rodgers in some ways, but are reluctant to speak out even respectfully against a guy who has so much influence with the team, and could make their lives difficult..
***
LP, your comment seems truly perceptive and well-worded.
I didn't realize that Gute is so active in communicating with Love, while not at all with Rodgers. What a striking difference!
***
All in all -- I'm sad to say -- it appears Rodgers is not the guy to rally the Packers to the fullness of their potential.
At the same time, maybe Love is indeed that guy who could lead the Packers into future prominence among the elite teams of the NFL.
So many young quarterbacks who are highly rated coming into the NFL turn out to be just average, if not disappointing; as for Love, while we don't know about him all that much, he seems to have the potential to be a top-ten QB in the NFL.
Plus, it seems the odds are slim that the Packers could obtain someone else in the near future with as much promise and preparation as Love.
He has flashed the elite skills, and shown signs of remarkable character, and that combination could have the Packers in contention for a Super Bowl in the next couple of seasons.

At this point whatever happens with Rodgers and the Packers would not surprise me. I've tried to stay away from this converation for the last few weeks because the horse has been beaten beyond death to the point where there is nothing left even for the buzzards to eat.

Yes, Rodgers can still play and yes he can change if he chooses to do so. But the issues are larger than whether or not Rodgers can still play and larger than Rodgers by himself.

First, the Packers and Rodgers would need to rework his contract. The Packers cannot support the cap hits ahead under Rodger's current contract and try to sustain a competitive team. Assuming the contract is reworked there is still the issue of Rodgers wanting his friends to be re-signed. Bak's contract is being reworked and that's fine. But it's time for the Packers to move on from Cobb, Lewis and Crosby. The team needs to get younger and better. Keeping the band together just hasn't worked and there is no reason to expect it to work in 2023. Then there is the need for Rodgers to agree to participate in OTAs which he hasn't done is the last three seasons.

However the real question/issue is; Is Rodgers the problem or is he a symptom of bigger issues with the organization? Rodgers return for this season will not help the coaching. MLF and his staff are not a very strong unit and allow repeated mistakes, stupid penalties, lack of in game adjustments and are outcaoched and out prepared nearly every week. As for the current roster, keeping Rodgers does not alleviate the issues at Safety and DL on defense or the TE, WR and OL question marks on offense.

Above this is the team's organization structure. As long as Murphy is calling the shots anything can happen and will not necessarily align with what Gute is trying to do with the roster. Not to mention salary cap decisions. The current structure has resulted in poor salary cap management and has given Rodgers control over the team. If Rodgers remains this needs to stop.

The bottom line is that the Packers and Rodgers need to reset. I've posted from the beginning that the best for Rodgers and the Packers is for Rodgers to retire. It's the cleanest break and the Packers can focus on building the team around Love, clean up their salary cap and move into the future. Keeping Rodgers even with a reworked contract only delays that for at least another season. Rodgers can move on into the next phase of his life. There is isn't anything left for him to prove by continuing to play in the NFL. He should get out while he is healthy.

If the Packers bring Rodgers back Love becomes a truly wasted pick. They can't trade him for any significant return and he spends another season on the bench which he won't be happy about especially after the Packers proclaiming he is ready to play. Not a good situation for Love or the team.

This the Packers last best chance to get a decent return from trading Rodgers if he doesn't retire. It's just a matter of making the best decision for both the Packers salary cap and draft capital. Bringing Rodgers back for 2023 is just not a good management decision. I will cheer for whoever plays for the Packers but there comes a time to move on from whoever the player may be. Thanks, Since '61

Please enumerate the lies about Rodgers that are in the media. Assertion is not fact.

Drafting position is determined by a team's ending record (and other related data), so using your "argument" that it's a failure, and assuming that it's a failure because they're not drafting near the top of each round, then it's a failure because the team's doing well, which means it's a failure because Rodgers keeps winning games when he shouldn't.

Man, that was convoluted. And of course you couldn't have meant any of that, but that is exactly the inference a person can take from what you wrote.

Of course, you could mean that you don't like the players Gutekunst drafts because you don't like the positions those players play, but that's not the same as "drafting position".

So just what the hell do you mean?

"Especially when they keep changing coaches."

As those of us in the reality-based community know, this team only seems to change coaches when said coaches resign. The last coach Scooter fired was Drayton, IIRC. Remember his "consistency" statement just after the season ended? The problem with Scooter is that he SHOULD be firing coaches and DOESN'T.

It's quite clear what I mean - but it's entirely NOT CLEAR what you mean. As I noted in my post.

1. Tell us which statements or stories are lies about Rodgers,
2. Tell us what you meant by "draft 'position'" in your post. What you said is obviously not what you meant.
3. Tell us which coaches were fired by Scooter - or how the coaches who have resigned in 2021 and 2022 - negatively affected a player's fit with the team.

You spout and you spout and you never provide FACTS to back up your spouting. Shit or get off the pot. Put up or shut up (except about guys we should draft - your cut-and-pastes there are useful).

As I think I've shown (with my own stuff as well as yours), it's easy to write crap that has no basis in fact. it's much harder to back up your arguments with real information.

"You have to capitalize when superior talent aligns with a winning culture. The Packers currently have that right now." Sorry but I dont believe this team currently has a winning culture. This team currently revolves around keeping one player happy and not doing anything to upset him. Doing what it takes to win is a distant 2nd on their priority list. I dont know what kind of culture were supposed to call that, but it's not a winning one.

RTS - it's a culture of remaining relevant until Murphy retires. When Rodgers leaves, regardless of how, the Packers lose their entertainment value, at least on a league wide basis. As a non-profit the Packers focus is on maintaining their brand image and sustaining their revenue stream. Keeping Rodgers helps with both of those factors.

I think the bottom line is that Murphy doesn't want the Packers to lose their prime time national games/image and/or risk a few losing seasons before he retires. He would rather take his chances with Rodgers than Love, at least for now.

As I posted above nothing will surprise me whatever happens but either way this is a temporary situation and whether it's this year or 2024 or even 2025 both Rodgers and Murphy will move on and the Packers will be still be here. It's just a matter of how good or bad it will be in the mean time. Thanks, Since '61

Actually, a Love-led Packers would be attractive in prime-time, at least early in the season and especially against a division opponent. The network can play the "new gunslinger in town", "new owner for the Bears?", and "Favre-to-Rodgers-to-Love comparison" storylines until we're sick of them.

How exciting it would be to have some new storylines for the Packers with Jordan Love.
There would indeed be great drama in watching to see if he can be the third-straight quarterback of the Packers who is a top quarterback in the NFL.
After all, there is a real possibility that Love won't succeed at QB, while at the same time he has shown glimpses of tantalizing promise.
Even if Love is a little less than Favre or Rodgers as far as personal awards, another matter for suspense is if he can lead the Packers to a Super Bowl win, then perhaps surpass both of his predecessors with a second title along the way.
***
I think the Green Bay Packers are truly America's Team, with a mystique that attracts fans across the nation.
We have the real-life legend of the Lombardi Packers, the overall storied history of the franchise going back more than a century, the appeal of being a small city from the rustbelt in the heartland of the country, and the lack of glittery obnoxiousness that goes with the Dallas Cowboys.
So, I like to think the Packers will get on prime time as long as the team is competitive. If Love begins to pop, then we'll get even more of the spotlight.
Living in Georgia (to my surprise), this is no small matter to me; but I'll risk receiving less Packers games on TV in return for a healthier team with a new quarterback.
Especially with Love, I have good hope the Packers will be ready to shine for a national audience as early as next season.

If Rodgers returns to the Packers they will still get a few prime time games. If Rodgers is traded those games will go to the Jets or Raiders or whichever team it is. If that team is in the playoff hunt late in the season those teams will get a game or 2 flexed into primetime because Rodgers will be the storyline for their playoff run.

Assuming that Love takes over in Green Bay I would expect 1 or 2 prime time games especially early in the season. If the Packers are in the playoff hunt they will get flexed into prime time depending on the opponent.

The networks tend to stay with the playoff teams from the prior season for their prime time games especially SB rematch games if they are on the regular season schedule and playoff contenders who are also division rivals. The flex schedule helps to bring the current seasons surprise teams into primetime.

My primary hope is that the packers don't end up with either Thursday night or Monday night games on the road regardless of who is playing QB. I'll be fine with the Sunday afternoon games either at 1 PM or 4:30 PM Eastern time. Thanks, Since '61

You can rationalize it any way you like, but it doesnt change anything. No TEAM wins anything when that team is more focused on keeping 1 guy happy than it is on winning. Aint no teams caving to divas and winning super bowls. Take a look around the league. Cardinals caved to Murray and fell apart. Head coach fired. Broncos broke their own backs bending over for Wilson. They sucked and Hackett will likely never get another shot at head coaching. Browns kneeled to Watson and they sucked. Packers kneeled to Rodgers and they sucked. Notice the trend here? 53 man teams cant be held hostage by 1 player and hope to win. It just doesnt happen. The NFL is ruining their own product by kneeling to these clowns. Jersey sales are more important than winning. Its just like Star Wars where selling action figures is now more important than putting out good films or shows. Ive had enough. Holding out hope that the Ravens refuse to pay Lamar. Somebody has to refuse to negotiate with these terrorists.

The problem is that the team owners want their team to have a "star", or "diva" or "franchise" QB on their team. And they want a face for the franchise and for their brand. And they are willing to pay exorbitantly for it. That one player brings in the $$$ from the fans, the advertisers, and the gamblers. They also bring in the headlines and the highlight reels.

Sports are part of the entertainment industry. If your team doesn't have any entertainment value where are they positioned against the other consumer choices for entertainment value? If you think of the Texans, or the Bears, or the Colts, or the Falcons, or Panthers to name a few, what value do they bring to their fans or the casual viewer from an entertainment point of view. Who is worth watching on those teams whether they win or lose.

This is why Woody Johnson and the Jets are the most likely destination for AR. Johnson's team is virtually invisible in the entertainment capital of the world and not only competes with the Giants, Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Jets, Rangers, Islanders and Devils for sports revenue and headlines but also competes with the NY Theater district, Lincoln Center, Jazz clubs, concerts and festivals and venues too numerous to mention that occur almost daily in NYC and the surrounding area. His team desperately needs a hero and a face for the franchise.

On the flip side with Rodgers gone who will the Packers have as their reason for watching them besides most of their current fans. What is their entertainment value without Rodgers? A big slide in title town? Yes Love can become that guy in a few seasons but maybe not. Remember when Rodgers took over in 2008. Did the Packers have much national exposure? Even in 2009 they were still under the radar. Until the 2010 playoffs and specifically until the playoff game against the Falcons Rodgers was just a very good, young and upcoming QB. But after that game he was the hero for the Packers and then the league after the 2011 MVP season. That's all gone when he leaves for Green Bay as far as the league and national entertainment value is concerned. I'm not saying that's forever. Love can bring it back but it will take some time even if he becomes the Packers 3rd consecutive HOF QB. Let's see how it plays out. The journey usually proves to be better than the destination. Thanks, Since '61

All good points, but it seems to me that the Packers are better positioned than any other team to NOT have a single face of the franchise (I'm thinking back to the 60s, when we had Starr, Hornung and Nitschke as some of the "faces").

This is because:
- We (supposedly) have no owner.
- We have no entertainment competition in NE WI.
(Appleton's PAC? The Resch Center? UW-GB? Lawrence? Hah!)
- Milwaukee adopted them decades ago and has no other foot
ball team.
- Revenue doesn't depend on national exposure.

All correct points jurp! However we should note that on a national basis the number of Packers fans has increased significantly over the last 30+ seasons thanks to the QB play of Favre and Rodgers. So additional revenue in terms of jersey sales, paraphernalia and memorabilia have increased as the number of fans has increased nationwide. Also during the Favre/Rodgers eras the Packers have conducted three very successful "stock" sales which may not have been as successful if the Packers were not a perennial playoff team for most of the last 30 seasons. So revenue does depend on national exposure even if it's only a small percentage of the teams total.

The only issue is the number of prime time games if the Packers have a downturn for several seasons. This would limit the Packers exposure and potentially limit their access to additional fans for their national fan base. Thanks, Since '61

Just what is the Packer's identity now...under MLF and Acting GM Murphy?

Tough and physical?
Offensive dominance?
Innovative?
Well coached?

The identity has become more opaque since 2019 when MLF promised his Illusion of Complexity and a top tier defense and ST excellence.

The Packers identity as of today for 2023 is ???? No one knows what the 2023 Packers will become including the FO and the coaches. For now they are still waiting on Rodgers. Even if Rodgers remains in Green Bay the identity will still be ??? because who knows what version of Rodgers will show up. Healthy? In decline? return to MVP form? Who knows.

We only know that "We're not idiots." Thanks to Mark Murphy. Thanks, Since '61

Cory your delusional. Rogers is not worth $60m. He was MVP for two years and the team still couldn’t close the deal. Green Bay is notorious for hanging on to players whose salary levels far exceeds their production on the field . Green Bay should be proud of its past accomplishments and stature within the NFL, but living in the past is our own worst enemy. Time to move forward and create a new legacy

Hanging on to older players for too long hasn't been a problem until recently. After being emasculated by Rodgers a couple of years ago for not treating veterans better, Gutey now seems reluctant to let any older players go.

Gutekunst said Love is ready to play and needs to play. That sounds pretty clear to me unless Murphy sticks his nose where it's allowed but doesn't belong.

Cory, I want you to ask one question. Let say ACR is back and collect his something under the 60 mill $ this season. And retires. Under the contract there are (at the moment) 2 void years worth 80 to 90 mill $. With already restructured contracts there will be 30 to 35 % of dead cap hit for 2024 and 2025. And no QB. Packers will become irrelevant and new Bears in NFC. How long? Who knows.

Lets say Packers win SB next season. Do you really believe that it is worthy of so many years of void? With no hope, less and less fans and focus of media will turn to other, exciting teams who will be contenders, pretenders and surprises. Nobody will mention Packers fans who will argue with each other over some new kid who should become a star. Or they will insist that the Packers trade their first and second round picks a couple of years upfront for some old QB, hoping to see the team flourish under his leadership.

I believe that every manager will agree with me on this - one year big success can not be compared with stable success almost every year. And world is changing, so are the games. There is more and more new rules or more old rules are changing every year. With that new tactics and new ideas in play planning comes. Staying in the past consumed great numbers of once huge and successful companies through the world. You have to change according the changing in the world.

With so much noise this season, media and public attention will be saturated if ACR decide to stay with Packers and they accept that. I expect less interest in future for poor life and missunderstanding of that uniqe person, mr perfect with no shortcomins. He is so nice and loved that whole US and huge part of the world will cry when he announce that he is retireing from football. There will be huge rise of suicids of that decision. Especially now when he uncover how science is empty story, true lie and nothing else. You know, drugs are fake. You should use cocain, LSD, alcohol, TCH - those are medicine. Joe Rogan knows better (only I do not know why he did not go to Rogan to heal him both broken claviculas).

Hey, David Bakhtiari am I also on Epstain list, because what I wrote now?

There is zero reasons to want AR back. We don't have the time or resources to get a #1 and #2 WR and good receiving TE we need. The contract should have never happened. AR needs a complete team around him to succeed to a super bowl. The window is shut with boards added. It's time for Love to show up in camp and run ML offense as it was intended for once and see what he can do. If AR goes to a ready team...he will do well. We were always missing an offensive weapon or 2. Maybe him and his large salary leaving will give us a chance to get a few key pieces for love to succeed as well. AR started with Driver, Jennings and Jordy, so we are not close to those days for Love yet.

If AR12 gave all his receivers all the reps they need like TB12 claimed to, that would've made a HUGE difference the last 3 seasons. If he won't and JL10 will?
