Cory's Corner: B.J. Raji's 'hiatus' is murky

B.J. Raji has had a mediocre NFL career.

That’s why it’s not heartbreaking that he has chosen to go on a “hiatus” from football for this year, but it’s still surprising.

Raji turns 30 this summer. He has been dinged up the last two years but to his credit he has continued to play. Aside from the injury-marred 2014 season, he’s only missed three starts since 2010, which is pretty remarkable.

And if he is stepping away from the game because of his health, I applaud that. Thanks to impeccable research, we now know how brutal head collisions are to the brain.

Chris Borland walked away from the game after one season because of injury-related concerns. However, Raji just wrapped up his sixth NFL season. He has never mentioned hitting the pause button because of injury.

And it’s also a surprise because he also turned down an $8 million offer from the Packers in 2013. Last year he played out a one-year prove it contract worth $1.7 million.

Despite being the ninth overall pick in 2009, Raji is just another guy. Offensive coordinators don’t lose sleep trying to game plan against a guy that at times has looked liked he has lost the fire for the game.

It would’ve been nice to bring Raji back, but all this does is force Ted Thompson’s hand. Now he must dip into the draft for a defensive lineman. Since that position is fully stocked, there are plenty of quality guys to choose from.

As for why Raji is leaving, I guess it doesn’t really matter. Whether it’s for family reasons, health or even if it’s because he is trying to avoid a drug test that could cause a suspension.

This doesn’t really hurt Raji’s legacy because he doesn’t really have one. His best moment came in the 2010 NFC Championship Game when he returned a Caleb Hanie pass 18 yards for the game-sealing touchdown.

Adding Raji would’ve been nice for depth. But he only had 14 percent of the Packers’ defensive linemen’s tackles last year. He cannot get much of a push and his best attribute is to more or less get in the way.

Raji has to search inside himself and find out if he really wants to play this game. He must capture that same fire that caused him to be a top 10 pick.

And if he cannot do that, he needs to stay away. It’s not worth it for both parties to invest time and money into a guy that has no interest in playing to his fullest potential.

But if he’s walking away strictly for health and family reasons, I cannot criticize that. No player in the NFL should be picked on for leaving a collision sport because they want to enjoy a fuller post-NFL life.

However, I have my reservations about his reasons.

Here's an exclusive interview with Raji on his decision. Great read and explains everything.

ok, so apparently what I posted earlier on this, disappeared?

Anyways.

If its true that Raji stepped away from football to take care of his ill mother and aunt, I will applaud him for that. That is very selfless and honorable.

" even if it’s because he is trying to avoid a drug test that could cause a suspension."

If he had money on the table, and he still had an inkling to play, I think he signs and sits for his allotted games. There's nothing less marketable than an FA who you know is going to sit when you sign him.

Unless we know something, though, I think it is irresponsible to speculate this way.

Irresponsible, yes. Kinda foolish, too. "Libelous" probably applies as well.

Wonder what would happen if wild-ass speculation like this were published by MKE Journal-Sentinel...

I think that in the absence of any real info, it's poor form at best. I understand that this kind of stuff happens in the blog-o-sphere. Doing something like that in a venue that claims to provide reliable info (like JSOnline) could line you up for legal action.

My initial post along with some others vanished. I thought the article was mean-spirited, and noted that while I've questioned Raji's motivation for years, he handled this with a lot of class, giving TT notice before the draft. Indeed, he could have signed a contract, earned say a $100K or more work out bonus for a week's effort, and then retired. Classy guy, IMO.

Before any conclusions, it is wise to inform yourself as much as you can. Otherwise your suggestions or advices to the another person (in this case to B. J.) looks like complaints on him. I'm happy that B. J. shows his class with his explanation why he is decide to step down from the game, from the role of the player. Also, I remember last season when he sits out because of the injury, he often mention how good he feels when he is teaching young guys how to play, as well as he mentioned how much he feels joy when his teaching shows positive effects in the games. He mention that is possible for him to come back to football, but I think that would be more likely in the coach suit, than as player. I wish him the best in solving his own demons and I hope he will win that battle.
Like him or not, excellent, good or bad player he was he was always at level of the Packers franchise. Even when he was turning down lucrative deals he was not spitting, like others, on the people who offered him pay checks for his services.
I will always remeber B. J.'s pick six in the NFCCG 2010 and his efforts in the SB...
I think we should thank him for his efforts to be the best he can while he was playing as Packers...

The Tweet about this post called Raji a mediocre NFL player.

There are 1700 rostered NFL players a year. Most of them don't have a ring, weren't selected for the Pro Bowl, didn't get selected to the PFWA All NFC Team, didn't get a pick 6 in a conference championship game, and didn't make $37M over a career from an org that doesn't overpay its players.

The Packers' D almost always seemed a little worse when Raji wasn't playing nose tackle, despite the Holy Grail tackle and sack stats some fans seem to cling to. They don't even make make much sense for assessing nose tackles.

He's going to be missed, "mediocre" or not.

Again it appears that many seem to think that the overall play/career of a player on the field , and which has been and rightfully so labeled as bust based on his drafting, is now forgotten and defended as soon as a family issue arises. Sympathy begins at that moment but doesn't erase prior events. Raji not signing for whatever reason should not have the Packers amok in search for a replacement as his failing (s) should of had eyes wide open prior to this news regardless of the reason one believes was the catalyst for him retiring or taking a mere hiatus.
But as mentioned in another comment, let's make him a coach since he mentioned he likes watching kids learn...which works well for Raji as he simply watched whether on or off the field as his resume'. But the INT will live long and prosper in the minds of some as Packer Hall of Fame merit.

Why does it matter how people remember him as a player? I happen to think Eric Torkelson was criminally under-appreciated (and will fight anyone who says otherwise). Does it matter?

Wait...so the post has been updated (without note) and the comment pointing out the error was deleted. What kind of BS is that?

Cory believes in censorship in his corner. He won't debate with you or rarely reason with you, he just deletes. I have been hard on him in the past and have been censored more than once but I'm fair and i give praise for good writing also.

This article could have not been written. Cory's corner has been better in the past few months but this is pure crap. NT is a selfless position. Your job is to eat up blocks and clog the middle, not collect stats. I don't like speculation. I like facts. I wish BJ well.

Article was pretty insulting to Raji. Also flip-flopped all over the place. I think Raji made the Packers better. I wish him well, and if he wanted to come back mid-season (say, after a failed Guion drug test) or next season I'd be happy to see him.

As far as the suspension goes - pure speculation. Many guys sign the contract and take the money, even in the face of a suspension. Just look at that @$$ in Dallas. To raise that possibility without any basis is really unnecessary.

I think that Raji's decision saved TT from over-paying for one of his own guys who really is not that good. He has already done it this year with Nick Perry. Last year it was Richardson, before that Bush, AJ Hawk, etc., etc.

I thought Raji had a decent season and at times was disruptive. He was certainly worth the roster spot and what they paid for him last year. I think the Packers wanted him back and have depth issues now that he is not returning. They need another big body at NT and you don't find a guy like Raji on the FA market at this point. So yeah, I think it hurts this defense a bit going forward.

"You don't find a guy like Raji on the FA market at this point."

Actually, you probably can. Check out Terrance Knighton (WAS). I'm not saying the Packers should sign him, but if the Packers think that they want "another Raji" from free agency, Knighton might be your guy.

"Cory's Corner" should be renamed "Hot Take Corner". This garbage belongs on First Take rather than this usually great Packers site. Horrible, narrative driven, hot take football opinions are one thing, but attacking B.J. Raji's character and integrity with zero basis. is another. Throwing out even the suggestion he retired due to a failed drug test is completely irresponsible jourmalism. This is a slap in the face to the reporters who did the real reporting on the story and talked with Raji. Did you see any of them suggest this nonsense? I doubt you have never met Raji a second in your life, so how do you justify this personal attack with literally zero evidence? You actually think he would make up that he has sick family members to cover up a drug issue? That's pretty shameful. Somehow stating that J.C. Tretter should start over David Bakhtiari at LT after one game has been surpassed as the worst thing ever written in this corner.

I totally agreed with BobSaget's comment. This article is irresponsible and even libelous. There's absolutely no reason to diss Raji who has served the Packers for 7 years and has decided to take a break from football for whatever reasons.

If the Packers were offering Raji $8M/yr for 4 years they could have had Trevisan, and there is now $8M that TT could put someplace else.
