CFWP: FSU WR Rashad Greene Receives Career Achievement Award

Congratulations to the Florida State wide receiver, who wins our unique award hailed as the four-year Heisman.

The bulk of the attention on Saturday will be on the Heisman Trophy and deservedly so, but we start today's column with our own annual award here at the College Football Weekend Preview.

Today we name the winner of the third annual CFWP Career Achievement Award, a.k.a. the four-year Heisman, given to a senior that has exhausted his collegiate eligibility at the FBS level for outstanding play over the course of his career.

What follows is a list of finalists in alphabetical order (just two this year), their qualifications and accomplishments and the winner announced at the end (yeah, we know the headline and the photo spoils the surprise).

Congratulations to our semifinalists, all of whom were considered for the award and all had terrific college careers: Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah, Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Florida State offensive lineman Cameron Erving.

The finalists are...

Rashad Greene, Wide Receiver, Florida State

Greene is the ACC's all-time leader in receiving yardage with 3,771 yards and the No. 1 receiver in Florida State history with 264 receptions, which ranks third in conference history.

His individual contributions have played a large part in team success with some of Greene's best performances coming on the biggest of stages. Not only does the Georgia native remain in contention to win a national championship this season, he was a member of the Seminoles' title-winning team last season, grabbing a team-leading nine receptions for 147 yards in the championship game over Auburn.

A big reason Florida State is currently on a 29-game win streak, Greene has contributed to three consecutive ACC championships, including his performance last week against Georgia Tech when he caught seven passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He also has another BCS Bowl win on his résumé in the 2012 Orange Bowl.

Greene has been Florida State's leading receiver in each of his four seasons in Tallahassee. With 27 career touchdowns and potentially two games to go in his career, he has the opportunity to tie or surpass Peter Warrick's 31 scores, the most in program history.

On Wednesday, Greene received first-team All-ACC recognition for a second consecutive season.

Justin Hardy, Wide Receiver, East Carolina

Hardy is the FBS all-time leading receiver with 376 receptions, in excess of 100 more than Greene.

The Pirates wide receiver has also enjoyed a record-setting career without the benefit of elite quarterback play that Greene has been blessed with.

While Hardy has caught a majority of his passes from a very good college quarterback in Shane Carden, he doesn't stack up with reigning Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston and a pair of first round NFL draft picks, E.J. Manuel and Christian Ponder.

Earlier this week, Hardy was named the Burlsworth Award winner, given to a player that began his career as walk-on, making his achievements all the more impressive.

Hardy has put together back-to-back seasons with more than 100 receptions, 114 in 2013 (ranking first in Conference USA and third in FBS) and 110 in 2014 with a bowl game to go (ranking first in the American Athletic Conference and second in FBS). He also has three consecutive seasons with more than 1,000 yards.

The program's all-timer leader in receptions and receiving yardage, Hardy was named to his third consecutive first-team all-conference team in 2014 and earned all-conference honors as a return specialist in 2012. He has 34 receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and two passing touchdowns in four years at Greenville, N.C.

And the winner is... Rashad Greene. Greene's team accomplishments factored heavily in the decision.

Congratulations, Mr. Greene. We'll present you with your certificate, suitable for framing, at the NFL Combine.

Past winners:

2013: Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron

2012: Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones

The Heisman Trophy

The most recognizable trophy in sports will be handed out on Saturday evening with television coverage starting at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN.

What follows is small thumbnail previews of the candidates with our prediction to follow.

The finalists are...

Alabama Wide Receiver Amari Cooper

Key stats: Leads the nation with both 115 catches for 1,656 receiving yards, the majority of them coming against competition in the toughest conference in America. Grabbed 14 touchdowns on the season.

Heisman Moment: In the win over Auburn, Cooper set an Iron Bowl record with 224 receiving yards on 13 receptions, tying the Alabama school record. Found the end zone three times against the Tigers.

Wisconsin Running Back Melvin Gordon

Key stats: Leads the nation in rushing yards (2,336), yards per game (179.7) and rushing touchdowns (26). His 7.6 yards per carry average isn't too shabby, and he added three receiving touchdowns.

Heisman Moment: His 408-yard effort against Nebraska unbelieveably set the FBS single-game rushing record in just three quarters of work.

Oregon Quarterback Marcus Mariota

Key stats: Leads the nation with a 186.3 quarterback rating, more than 15 points better than the second-closest player. Boasts a 38-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Highly effective runner with 669 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.

Heisman Moment: In the Civil War victory over rival Oregon State on national television, Mariota completed over three-quarters of his passes, connecting on 19 of 25 throws for 367 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, adding two rushing touchdowns to blow out the Beavers on their home turf.

Prognostication: The CFWP prediction for who should win and who is going to win are one in the same—Marcus Mariota.

After two consecutive seasons of primadonna quarterbacks winning the award between Jameis Winston and Johnny Manziel, Mariota will be a breath of fresh air.

His coronation will also set up a meeting between the two reigning Heisman Trophy winners in the Rose Bowl when No. 3 Oregon meets No. 3 Florida State.

Army-Navy

Enjoy the Army-Navy game at 2:00 p.m. CT on CBS. College GameDay will also be there for pre-game coverage at 8:00 a.m. on ESPN.

If you're looking for players to watch, Army fullback Larry Dixon and Navy safety Parrish Gaines have both been invited to the East-West Shrine Game while Navy long snapper Joe Cardona has been invited to the Senior Bowl.

Prediction: Navy extends its winning streak against Army to 13 games as Keenan Reynolds runs rampant on the Army defense. 28-14, Middies.

See you next week when we preview the pre-Christmas bowl games.

Rashad Greene is a class act and have followed him throughout his FSU career. He would be a great add the Packer roster! Would love to see him come catch balls from our future Hall of Famer! He is clutch as well as tough. He has been in a program that has taught him to be a big time gamer. Bring him on!
