Carolina Panthers Sign Former Packers WR Jarrett Boykin

Boykin agreed to a one-year deal with the Panthers after the Packers denied him a tender offer as a restricted free agent.

Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jarrett Boykin signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, the organization announced on Friday.

Entering the offseason as a restricted free agent, Boykin did not receive a tender offer from the Packers, a not-so-subtle suggestion that the organization was ready to move in a different direction.

Terms of Boykin's deal were not immediately available, but the North Carolina native is excited to return to his roots.

"It means a lot being from the area and having the opportunity to come back and get a chance to play for the Panthers," Boykin told the Panthers official website. "But at the end of the day, it still boils down to how I go about my business on the field. I have to prove myself all over again."

After a breakout season in 2013 that saw him catch 49 passes for 681 yards and three touchdowns, Boykin fell out of favor within the Packers offense in 2014.

It took about three games into the regular season for Davante Adams to leap frog Boykin as the team's No. 3 wide receiver, signaling a reduced role from that point forward. Boykin finished the 2014 season with just three catches for 23 yards.

Now that Boykin officially won't be back in Green Bay, the Packers appear poised to give second year players Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis every opportunity to fill out the depth chart in addition to any other rookies or free agents they might add.

Boykin was one of the Packers' bright spots on special teams this past season after forcing two fumbles for that unit.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity the Panthers are giving me. I'm going to come in here and bust my tail," Boykin said. "I'm trying to re-establish my identity and get back to being the player I know I can be."

I'm somewhat surprised the Vikings didn't sign him...

No thanks to the packers for making a name for an undrafted free agent? I hope it comes soon. I will never be an nfl scout but it seems like once there was enough film of him to look at he disappeared.

Are you using an I-Pad? At times when I've used mine to post it appears as though the comment didn't post so I'll hit enter again and it appears twice.

That's cool for Boykin. The Panthers are a great fit, cam could use a possession type receiver. Hopefully he can regain his 2013 form and turn his career around.

I was really happy at first because I thought it said "Jarrett Bush."

I still cringe when i see bush in the secondary but year after year he proves his worth on special teams. The plan is always to not have to use him on defense. It took a while but i no longer see him as a joke.
