Bears Likely Opening Opponent For Packers

Ex-Packer PR man Jeff Blumb reports the Packers will most likely open up against their historic rivals from Chicago.

Recently retired Packers PR man Jeff Blumb took to Twitter this morning to drop the following knowledge:

Not confirmed, but continue to hear on NFL grapevine that it will be Bears at Packers in Week 1 Thursday night opener.

When looking at the Packers' 2011 opponents, this obviously makes sense.

If this does indeed turn out to be the matchup, expect yet another low-scoring affair between the two NFC North rivals. Not only do both defenses match up well against both offenses, but the Thursday night NFL opener is ALWAYS a defensive battle, as the offenses are still trying to find their rhythm.  Throw in potential training camp time lost due to the lockout, and you're looking at a potential Lombardi/Halas-type throwback game.

If it's still 2011, any opener will be a good opener.

i've felt for some time that the Packers' real contemporary rival is the vikings - they've been so easy to hate for so long, and provided better competition in general for my generation (i'm 28).

i think at some point last season (zenith-ed at the nfc championship game), that shifted. i think with the continued crumbling of the vikings (we really should send that brent farv a thank you note, don't you think?), and the cutler-led(sort of) bears, i think the division is now at a pace where my own level of disgust and vitriol is more aligned with my father's - directly at all the FIBs and their team. it's heartening to be able to connect on important issues.

that said,

the bears still suck.

That's something we can all agree on, no matter what generation we belong to.

The bears still suck.

Agreed. The Vikes were up for most of the last 15 years while the bears have been mostly down, making it easy to redirect hostilities toward the Vikings....textbook projectionism. Now that the world is getting back into allignment, we can correct that temporary aberation and continue to spread the word that the bears do still suck.

I expect GB to have more sucess under better weather conditions (dome team!). GB is clearly more explosive althought Chicago can put up points on a good day. 37-20 GB

So, would this be an NFL Network game, or NBC? The only reason I ask is that I don't think the cable system in Green Bay even carries the NFL Network. I thought I heard Wilde mention that. THAT would go over well with the locals.

Thursday's have been NFL network night. 2007 we had that disaster with Green Bay Dallas game that was only on NFL network and most cable companies don't even carry it. Not sure if they learned anything from that or not!!

If I'm not mistaken, NFL Network takes the Thursday games a week or two before thanksgiving.

Keep in mind, the Packers are a dome team now. The Bears will always be a challenge.

I agree -- and that always makes me wonder, why not go with straight field turf instead of the hybrid? I could see it losing some of the "Lambeau Luster" but I feel like more home wins will make the fans forget what real grass is pretty quick.

They'd better beat the hated Burrs. I can't remember the last time CHI had a better team than GB aside from the 2005 team and the first 1/2 of 2006 in the last quarter century.

And yet, we always seem to play them terribly.. and it always seems close. Just another reason to hate the delusional and megalomaniacal Chicagoans.

Only since Lovie has this been a close rivalry again. If memory serves, I think Brent was something like 50-2 agains the Bears in his first dozen or so seasons. Yeah, I know, hard to believe they played that many times in only 12 seasons.

They should hold off on this game until a little later in the season in my opinion. It will be a great opener to the season, but letting the first matchup be a little later in the season will let the rivalry fester just a bit longer.

Is it just me or is this just stupid, I hate when they play early in the season especially the first game of the year they should be playing in the middle and the end of the year it's just not the same watching these teams playing each other in warm weather

I would love being a game up on the Bears with a tiebreaker after week one. Bring them on. I care little about what a national audiance will think.

Zero I highly doubt being up on the Bears after wk 1 is going to matter this year. They're going to suck again. They are getting old on D - and they got every conceivable break possible this past year. As a matter of fact, it seems every 3-4 years they get lucky and do well, only to follow it up with general terribleness the next 2-3 years.

My division order after wk 17 of 2011:

1. GB 13-3ish
2. DET 9-7
3. CHI 6-10
4. MIN 3-13

If the Bears win this game and the subsequent five in the series, it STILL won't make up for January 23, 2011 :)
