Aaron Rodgers Practices in Pads for First Time Since Breaking Collarbone

Aaron Rodgers in pads for the first time since breaking his collarbone. Threw during individual drills open to media. Looked sharp again.
— Tyler Dunne (@TyDunne) December 5, 2013

Dunne would go onto report that Matt Flynn was taking repetitions with the starters, however, likely indicating that Rodgers still hasn't been fully cleared by the Packers medical staff.

At least today's practice could be considered another step in his progression as he continues to recover from injury but that will be little of help to the Packers until he actually returns in a game.

Just mind games. That's all this is. Keep the opponent guessing.

The season is over. AR hasn't been cleared to play and MM is sittin him. This team gave up as soon as he went down and quit. I'm tired of guys not playing because of their value. Its not value to the team its all about how much money stands to be lost in case of further injury. Its not about the team anymore, its about the player. The NFL is on its way down, and ratings will suffer when you no longer can touch a high priced QB.

This is why I was skeptical to see the release of Vince Young after the final preseason game. I recall the reasoning being "we should have brought him in earlier.... he hasn't had the time...."

But they bring in Seneca Wallace as the Week 1 backup, with zero experience?

You don't think VY would be a better option after 9 weeks on the regular season roster? Not better than Scott Tolzein, or a Matt Flynn who hasn't caught on with a team since he left GB the first time?

Granted, I don't think VY is the end all solution to lead us to the promised land after an A-Rod injury. But I certainly think he slows the leaking ship during that time, and we maybe win the rest of that Bears game, the Vikings game, and the upcoming Falcons game.

Interesting in retrospect, isn't it?

We've had multiple guys having to deal with the "hasn't gotten the first string snaps" explanation this season. Yet Young would have had far more snaps by this point, far more than Wallace, Tolzein, or Flynn have had.

Now, the discussion is whether or not Young would really have been any better for the offense than these guys. I would offer he'd be at least as good as Tolzein, as he actually has arm strength befitting a starter. Question is whether or not his decision-making and ability to run the offense at the LOS would be any better.

Running an offense at the LOS was always a big problem w/ Young. He wasn't good at the presnap reads and progressions. He would got to the LOS w/ the playcalled, rarely able to change plays or adjust them as is necessary in the Packers offense. Then once the play started he didn't go thru progressions. One read and pull it down. He could never go thru multiple reads or go to the backside w/ reads. One read one side of the field, then run. He limits an offense in a big way. One thing he could do tho was make plays w/ his feet.

I can understand the second guessing related to the 'back-up' quarterback. I haven't seen updated numbers, but all back-ups that started a game or finished a game were 2-19 through the end of week 8. When you throw out games were back-up quarterbacks are playing back-up quarterbacks I would be willing to bet the winning percentage this year for any NFL team starting a back-up hovers around the .200 mark. Quarterback play is so poor beyond about 20 starters it just doesn't look like it matters. You're extremely unlikely to win these games. With the cap being flat I don't see the value in dumping cap money on a vet next year.

Ask yourself why no other team called VY when so many of them needed a QB. Maybe he's to much like Titus Young. There's more to meet the eye when it comes to VY.

if young went back to pass but did nothing but run every time over the past five weeks I believe the team may have one a few of those games.

I want AR on the field as much as anybody else, but absolutely NOT if he's not fully healed. Four weeks and six days (come Sunday) is a mighty short time to come back from broken collarbone.

I broke my collarbone when I was 17 (admittedly a long time ago). There's no way to completely immobilize it during healing. There was also no way I was even picking up a heavy object before six weeks. The perceived tenderness lingered for a long time after that.

Of course, AR is a well-conditioned professional athlete receiving the best treatment possible so I understand there's no real comparison. However, just from personal experience, I'll be very nervous if AR is on the field Sunday.

Just depends on the severity of the break. Remember Wood in the SB after he broke his collarbone? When he came out in the 2nd half on the sideline he couldn't move w/o wincing in pain. Rodgers jogged off the field like nothing was wrong. He was jogging off the field and swinging his arm w/o any pain whatsoever. An actual fracture is different than a crack in the bone, but both are considered broken. The healing for a fracture is significantly longer than a crack, that doesn't disrupt the bone. Guessing a full fracture might take 8-12 weeks to heal, whereas a crack might be 4-6 weeks.

It's probably good that AR-12 is taking snaps with the backups because with the injury history, they're likely to be the starters.
