A Word On Aaron Rodgers

A lot of good (and some not-so-good) back-and-forth in the comments yesterday regarding Rodgers' comments on Favre. As I wrote there and over the course of the year on the blog, I am a big Rodgers fan for how he's handled the whole thing. I also think the Packers 6-10 record in 2008 had more to do with the defense and injuries than Rodgers.

However.

Let's make it perfectly clear, right here, right now. Rodgers grace period is over. He's got a full season of games under his belt and his weaknesses are readily apparent. He stares down his first read far too often and he presses something horrible in the two minute drill. He needs to improve in both these areas and he needs to stop throwing games away on the final drive. Otherwise, it will indeed be time to start questioning whether he is indeed the quarterback Thompson obviously thought he was when he signed him through 2014.

Listen to this guy . . .

16 games - that's it? Common football theory states that the rule for knowing what you have at QB is really 3 years or 25 to 30 games. But I guess as a member of BLOG (Blow-hard Self-Righteous Goon . . . yes, it's a terrible acronym but it fits) you get to dictate truth.

I must have missed the 'presser' when that was stated.

Not sure of the "stare down" thing. I noticed on replaying some of the games his seemingly long looks at one side of the field were followed by a throw to the other side. The two minute drill? I think the problem there was more MM that AR. AR had virtually no control of the play calling. In a number of the losses, MM played only for the lead points and pulled back on the offense when they had a chance to put the game away. Chicago, Minnesota and Carolina come to mind.

That said, I totally agree the "honeymoon" is over. MM has got remove the shackles and let him play. During the defensive fourth quarter collapses of 2008, I said the Packer Offense needed to take on a new style. "Score early, score often." That's the way they need to approach 2009. And the ball should be put firmly in Rodgers hands. If MM still insists on tight control and a risk averse offense, we may have a QB problem.

(rattles the cage) more Brett Favre talk!!!

Sorry, after yesterdays epic battle of the blog. I could not resist throwing his name out there again.
Yesterday was like walking into a room full of Packer fans and screaming the name "Brett Farve" and then running out to watch the fights begin.

stanislaw - why so hostile? And if you hate my opinions so much, um, why do you read my blog? Odd.

As for quarterback play, NFL personnel people, you know, REAL ones that evaluate quarterbacks for a living, say that it takes ten games to know what you have in a starting quarterback. But you keep on confusing that with the wide receiver position (where it does indeed take three years) if it makes you feel superior.

Not hostile and don't hate - I just don't like the know it all attitude. I agree with some of your opinions but if you want a psycophantic (spelling?) following - fine I won't post anymore.

(christ, what a baby and you're a New Yorker, right?) And it's not odd - I like the constant updates . . . I guess qty over quality.

10 games - not that I don't believe you but where did you hear that?

Interesting that the hardest job on the field only takes 10 games to understand what you have but WR's only take 3 years.

stan: The last thing I want is a bunch of bootlickers reading my stuff. But I do prefer, as do most CHTV readers, a level of decorum. It's what separates this site from the tripe you read in the comment sections over at JSOnline and the like. Feel free to disagree, but if you just can't seem to do it without the school-yard attitude, perhaps this isn't the place for you. Besides, I'm clearly not providing 'quality' content, according to yourself. (And just for the record - it's not that I 'know it all' - but it is my bloody blog. I write, wait for it, MY OPINIONS. That's what a blog IS. I'm sure as hell not going to preface everything with "I don't know anything, but..." I assume everyone reading already knows I'm not an authority)

As for 'ten games', enjoy:

Thanks for the heads up on the Lombardi quote (then again if he was so smart he'd be working for a team and not a blog) Where's the thing on the receiver? I wouldn't say 3 years - 2 years max (i.e. Sharper, Rice) Of course, there are no absolutes.

Anyway - when you say it's your bloody blog and you state that it's your opinion - me calling you a self-righteous blow hard, well it really comes with the territory. Don't take it personally, I don't mean to offend but if the fu shitz . . .

Anyway, I'll tone it down and just use sarcasm.

Hey keep up the great work!

Indeed, this is true.

packeraaron

Did you also know that A-Rod sometimes throws off his backfoot? He also doesn't always cover up the ball when scrambling for his life? I've also noticed that not all his passes are tight spirals !! What was TT thinking?

AR posted stats that rival any 1st year starter in NFL history. Your analysis is flawed. You haven't made anything perfectly clear to anyone. Also, if you are incapable of taking critisism for what you blog, maybe you shouldn't be blogging.

(sigh)

Again, criticism is fine. Sarcastic name-calling? Just not what I'd like to see on the site. Is that really that hard a distinction to make?

As for Rodgers, as I've said ad nauseum, I'm a fan. I think he's a very good quarterback with a chance to be very good, though perhaps never 'great'. And I stand by what I say above - his grace period is over.

I agree. Rodgers did well in his 1st year as starter. I can understand and live with the 6-10. However, 2009 should see at least a .500 or better record or there's going to be trouble. Aaron needs to take the next step. He got paid and he understands that he needs to live up to that cash and much higher expectations to win/finish games.

I think I'm starting to get Corey now. He takes offense on the site and lashes out. Nothing personal, maybe just his style.

Not one to step aside just cuz the opponent might be BIGGER.... I would ask Aaron ---- "If this was Brett Favre's 1993 Season, would you have made the same statement just now? .... Obviously, knowing what we know NOW, after a full decade or more, what with Mike Holmgren threatening to SIT THE GUNSLINGER DOWN (remember?) for all those INT's.....? -- I sometimes wonder why it suddenly becomes so easy to demand better of the person who follows the Gunslinger than it was to "DEMAND BETTER OF THE GUNSLINGER".
NOTE TO ALL CHEESEHEADS: .. I fully treat all Packer Players with the SAME expectations. If Favre got more than one Season (full or otherwise) then Bootlegger gets the same option, period. YOU DON'T LIKE IT... TOUGH. Let's treat all Packer QB's with the same attitude. Blogging, or otherwise, this nonsense of saying Rodgers honeymoon is over ... is pretty much just crap chatter.
1. Rodgers came in 5th in the League in QB "TD vs INT" ratios. Yea, that's something to get real peeeeeoooo'd about - He shoulda been Numbah One, is that it?

2. Man, talk about double-standards ... what's the Lefties gonna do when it's waaay too obvious OBAMA's NOT GONNA give anyone that tax cut after all - geeesh! BTW, it's not gonna happen, just so ya know. They're in there robbing the piggybank, as we speak, people.

3. Where was I? Rodgers ALSO came in 6th in the League OVERALL ... but, for some Gunslinger junkies, THAT "still" isn't good enough. Ya right, neither was beatin the crap outta the Indianapolis Colts. THAT game was pretty horrible. We shoulda ran the score up, college style. I know!

I KNOW THIS --- Aaron Rodgers IS the real deal. He had a Pro Bowl season, in 2008, despite having a horrible O-Line to work behind (let's see YOU try it) - HE EVEN GOT INJURED and still stuck it out - but (again) for some THAT AIN'T GOOD ENUF.

WELL, I guess it's time we called some Mommies, so they can come pick up you little kiddies who can't have it BOTH WAYS.. up! ... what's her number again?

GO PACKERS! and, BITE ME! For cry iy iy!
