5 Things to Watch in Packers at Bears: Who Steps up Without Watson?

5 things to look out for as the Packers open the 2023 regular season at Soldier Field.

We made it.

The 2023 NFL season is upon us, and the Green Bay Packers are ready to renew the oldest rivalry in football as they travel to Chicago to take on the Bears.

Here are five key things to watch on Sunday as the new era in Green Bay begins:

How different is the new Packers offense?

It’s no secret Aaron Rodgers had a huge influence on how the Packers offense was constructed and run. The consensus is that this stifled or compromised Matt LaFleur’s scheme to a decent degree.

Sunday will bring the first look at a Matt-LaFleur-led Green Bay offense with a quarterback who doesn’t have preferences built up over a decade-plus in the league, but what will that mean?

The hope will be more cohesion.

For all the brilliance and magic moments Rodgers brought, the Packers looked disjointed at times on offense during the LaFleur-Rodgers years, as concepts and plays Rodgers liked from the Mike McCarthy days were shoehorned into LaFleur’s playbook.

Those should now be gone, and Packers fans should expect motion, which Rodgers wasn’t enamored by, to become a bigger part of the offense. The run game could also become much more prominent, especially since the Packers are missing a key pass catcher…

Who steps up in Christian Watson’s absence?

Watson was ruled out of the season opener by LaFleur on Friday with a hamstring injury, the same ailment the second-year receiver missed three games with in 2022.

The hope will be that Romeo Doubs, who was also nursing a hamstring and will be ‘questionable’ for Sunday, can go after practicing in a limited capacity on Thursday and Friday.

Either way, some inexperienced wideouts will have to play significant snaps in Chicago. Rookie second-round pick Jayden Reed already figured to be heavily involved, but Samori Toure, who played fewer than 120 snaps last year, should now take on a bigger role.

Rookie receivers Dontayvion Wicks, who was recently removed from the injury report but has missed time in his first training camp with a concussion and then a hamstring injury, and Malik Heath, another undrafted success story for the Packers, will also get their chance.

The problem? None of these players can replicate the kind of game-breaking speed Watson brings to the offense.

Reed is probably the fastest of Green Bay’s other receivers, with the team clocking him in the 4.3s at his pro day, but he is a more diminutive player and projected to do most of his work for the Packers from the slot.

At Michigan State, Reed was more of an outside, vertical receiver, and played bigger than his size, so he could be moved around the formation on Sunday as a result.

Jordan Love’s poise

Comments regarding Love’s even-keeled nature have been a theme of the summer, and he’ll need all that poise this week entering the hostile surroundings of Soldier Field.

It’ll be his first time taking the field as the opening day starter, and while Love has shown impressive command of the offense in pre-season, it will be more difficult to stay calm and execute while missing his top receiver and with thousands of Bears fans baying for his blood.

Love should have ample protection from an offensive line that looks set to be a strength of the team, which should help him settle in and make sound decisions throwing the ball as he looks to get off to the perfect start.

Stop the (QB) run

Over his first two years in the league, Justin Fields has been an extremely limited passer, but he is a threat to break off a long touchdown run at any time.

The Packers found that out for themselves in their last meeting with the Bears, as Fields got loose for a 55-yard score on the ground.

Outside of that though, Green Bay has held up quite well, with Fields rushing for another 153 yards on 28 attempts against the Packers for an average of 5.46 yards per rush and one touchdown. His career yards per rush is 6.7.

Run defense was certainly an issue for the Packers in 2022 though, and with a much younger defensive line featuring players mostly known for their pass rush, Sunday will serve as a tricky early test.

If their defense can be disciplined in their pass rush and force Fields to become a pocket passer, the Packers will have an advantage at the quarterback position.

In the event Fields does break contain, preventing a chunk play from turning into a touchdown could be the difference between winning and losing for Green Bay.

2022’s first round picks

Amid all the hype around Green Bay’s talented rookie class, last year’s first-rounders, Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt, have somewhat flown under the radar this summer.

There has been a noticeable lack of discourse around Walker and his performance during training camp and pre-season, for better or worse. It’s therefore difficult to know what to expect from the linebacker in his second year after an up-and-down rookie campaign.

Wyatt didn’t see the field as much as one might expect from a 24-year-old first-round pick in 2022, but when he got his chance, flashed serious explosiveness and pass rush ability.

This year he will be starting along the defensive line after the departure of veterans Dean Lowry and Jarren Reed. Wyatt needs to show he can hold up versus the run as well as getting after the quarterback.

As the Packers look to open their next Super Bowl window, the development of their premium draft picks from a year ago will have a massive say in how quickly the team can become a contender.

Also: How will Musgrave be lined up and how many receptions will he have? How many yards will Jones and Dillon combine for against a defense that may be a little less worried about a proven vertical threat? On defense, all we all talk or are we going to actually play more aggressively, particularly on third down? Who is going to spy Fields, if we do it at all? How does the safety combination hold up? On STs, does our new kicker show not only poise, but accuracy? And does Rich B. have any tricks up his sleeve, like a fake punt under the right circumstances?

I would really like to see the coaching staff kick off this new era with a little more unpredictability and willingness to pull out all the stops to get a win, if that's what it takes. Go for it.

No Watson=more snaps and targets for some other guys. If we threw it 35 times, he'd probably get about 7 or 8 targets, so now, everybody gets to absorb two more chances. And of course, his 55 snaps will have to be split up among guys like Reed and Toure and .......Heath. We'll see what they do with them. Musgrave will probably replace the snaps and targets of Tonyan.

If you're a strong team, and you play well, and you keep preparing for the future, you're always going to be in the hunt.

Fake punts.....that started me chuckling and then laughing. Punting in High School is different from the pros because you don't gain 50 yards of field position, you gain about 25....if you're lucky. So I was always trying fakes, and when they work, everybody is happy, and when they don't, you look like a bonehead. My favorite is that my long snapper was also my backup fullback so he had an eligible number. We'd do this swinging gate when we lined up, people would be scrambling and nobody would be covering the snapper and he'd be wide, wide open.

This is precisely why I have focused on our depth at WR since the draft; it's foreseeable that it will be important. Of course I was hoping it wouldn't be so soon, but ... we're still loaded at the position.

Wishful thinking KKB. I hope your crustal ball is right. But, comparing Heath to Watson is literally comparing the tortoise with the hare. Maybe in the slot their would be a chance but down field Heath will never get there before the opposing safety. When facing top tier CB's Heath will likely never get open at all.

He will get open. He is slower but will catch the ball better than Watson.

Those certainly are key points. We in fact have little evidence of how truly poised Love is. Joe Barry is still the DC so there is good evidence they have not sorted out how to stop the QB run. The 2022 draft class and the overall youth of the team requires good coaching to reach their potential. Barry is not up to it on D, so we can only hope MLF actually has been stifled before. Ee can also hope he has figured out how to get a team ready for a season opener.

That doesn't sound like "holding up quite well" to me. And that's after taking a 55-yard TD run out of the stats. The Packers won both of those games though, so there's that. The Packers probably need to do better against Justin Fields running than they did last year, as he has at least one good receiver to throw to now. Quay Walker should be spying him.

So many intriguing storylines in this game.

LOL...No it doesn't does it? Perhaps Mark was thinking to what Colin Kaepernick did to them in the 2012 playoffs and compared to THAT it is a little better!

""" The Packers won both of those games though, so there's that. """""

Be careful, Greg. Once you go down that rabbit hole there's no way back. I mean, you hold a team to 29 points in two wins (14.5 ppg) and somehow you're supposed to get style points, too? Wow, I thought the
Russian judge was tough, but this strikes me as semi-crazy. In the immortal words of Coach Carter, "When did winning not become enough"?

If you look at the games around the NFL, I think you're going to see that stuffing the run isn't the highway to victory or the playoffs that it's being held up to be. I was laughing Thursday when the first down run got stuffed and then on second or third down they gave up a big completion.

I don't care how many yards they get on the ground nearly as much as points on the board. That's the measure.

Yes. Points on the board is always the measure.

This year I hope for a better defense against the run. Last years version gave up a lot of yards on the ground that helped deliver 9 losses.

I think they have the talent to be a good defense. Tomorrow will tell the tale.

lousy offensive play led to 9 losses. yards on the ground may contribute to lack of possessions, but the packers offense pretty much stunk every time it counted.

One total years of experience for all the receivers, a rookie starting tight end, and a QB in his second NFL start. I expect at least 36 points. /s

I expect the young players to make mistakes on O. My real focus will be on whether LaFleur gives them a chance to make their talent payoff despite that. Will he win the tactical battle, can he scheme up advantage and adjust during the game?

On D, we have all known what is coming from the Bears. Can Barry thwart that with all the talent we have? Can he take a step to showing us why continuity was what we needed and show LaFleur was right? A bad showing today will be a pretty ominous portent.

This is a day when our coaches must shine.

Mistakes are always a part of the game in the NFL. The theme that because it's a young team the "mistakes" are more probable and costly is misleading IMHO. What counts is 'making plays'. A 20 yard pass play completely negates an offsides or wrong route on the previous play. Much will be made of the 'mistakes, from our young team but don't let that mislead you, it's just the story line right now. Give these guys a chance to play and then we can start making judgements. From my perspective, having watched football for many, many years, this is a very exciting and promising team from a talent standpoint. My only regret is if they had drafted a few players like Musgrave, Reed, Watson and Doubs earlier when we still had Rogers but I'm hopeful for Love.

Yeah, when a young player makes a mistake, the announcers love to point out that they did it because they're young. Mistakes by veterans tend to be overlooked.

Watson is a china doll! Same shit as last year! I don't give a shit how fast or tall he is. If he can't stay on the field what good are you? Man up!

It's the attack of the hammie monster again. I remember that he arose about 10 years ago. But I thought we slayed him. No, he is still aflicting our receivers. The Hammie Monster.
