3 Lessons The Packers Can Learn From The Super Bowl Champion Chiefs

The end of the season stung for the Packers. So what did the Chiefs do that they didn't?

The Packers fell short of their big goal again.

So what can they learn from the Chiefs, the only team to reach their ultimate objective this year?

1. Offense is about more than the quarterback

Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the game today. But the Chiefs didn't depend on him to carry the team. Their offensive line stepped up and absolutely dominated. They took a star-studded Philadelphia front that was one of the best in NFL history at sacking the quarterback and absolutely shut them out. Their running backs had 5.1 and 8.5 yards per carry. Andy Reid completely pencil-whipped the Eagles, getting Travis Kelce open early, then taking advantage of the Eagles defensive adjustments by shifting to receiver routes that got unheralded names wide open for easy scores. Mahomes won the Super Bowl MVP award without having to do anything all that spectacular.

The Packers could take a lesson here regardless of who their quarterback is next year: build around your quarterback, but don't depend on him to do it all (it also helps if the quarterback doesn't insist on doing it all)

2. Defenses have to help, they don't have to dominate

The game is changing and the rules are making it harder and harder on defenses. As a result, we don't see a lot of playoff games with single-digit scoring anymore. The Chiefs defense gave up 4 touchdowns, but they did enough to win. After digging themselves a hole early, they got themselves out of it with a forced fumble returned for a touchdown to tie things up. Then, with the help of some halftime adjustments, they held the Eagles to one touchdown in the second half while the offense got back on track with three straight touchdown drives before eschewing an easy fourth and draining the clock and kicking the deciding field goal.

The Packers seem to play passive defense, too often letting teams move down the field easily, building confidence and racking up points. In doing so, they miss the chance to come up with big game-changing plays.

3. Personality matters

The team got down on the scoreboard, but never got down on the sideline. The coaches stayed upbeat, the players played with confidence, even down double digits in the second half and still trailing in the 4th quarter. They clapped and high-fived on the sideline. They told the Eagles they were gonna come back and win on the field. They never lost their swagger

The Packers personality has not persevered very well lately. As Robert Tonyan pointed out last offseason, this is a team that gets down on itself when they are behind in games. They need to get their collective chin up and realize that they have the talent to come back. Then they need to show it.

The end of this season stung for the Packers. The Chiefs showed them where they need to improve.

Now, they just have to do it.

Rodgers is the biggest moper on the field when things aren't going well.
He is the definition of a front runner, and it is his attitude that trickles down to the rest of the team.

The key to building championship caliber teams is doing it through the draft.
The better you draft the better chances you have on becoming a great team.

Hold your breath stockholder, you know by now that every single article on CHTV turns into an attack on AR...when in my opinion it should be on MLF and his crappy coaching staff...how can MLF fire up a team thats down?? Haven't people seen him look like he's about to cry on the sidelines?

Here are my three:
1. KC has a coach who makes in-game adjustments based on what the defense is doing. We have a coach who flaps his arms.
2. KC’s defense, while not great, is good enough to make enough stops and big plays to allow their All-Pro QB to win the game. Our defense takes the ball away from the center and pushes the opposing team’s training staff.
3. When the defense shuts down KC’s main weapon, their QB throws it to lesser players who are open. Our QB runs around waiting for his main weapon to get open and then throws it out of bounds while ignoring open receivers because he doesn’t “trust “ them.

"The Packers could take a lesson here regardless of who their quarterback is next year: build around your quarterback, but don't depend on him to do it all (it also helps if the quarterback doesn't insist on doing it all)"

Wow, WHAT a concept. Imagine, using the 52 other players on your roster to give you the best chance to win on any given Sunday. Remember back in 2019 and some of 2021 when the Packers offense showed lots of motion? Schemed players wide open AND the QB actually followed the script and participated? Ever since MLF became HC, the Packers offense has gotten further and further away from the true roots of his offense.

"Then, with the help of some halftime adjustments, they held the Eagles to one touchdown in the second half while the offense got back on track"

Spagnola has now coached three SB winning defenses. NONE of his defenses were considered "Great" defenses, pretty much middle of the road IIRC. But what he's always been really good at is adjustments. No matter what the opposing offenses were doing to his defense in the 1st half, they'd make halftime adjustments and take away whatever the offense was doing successful.

Fritz Shurmur, the Packers DC under Mike Holmgren when the Packers went to back to back SBs winning one of them was GREAT at adjustments, especially in 1996. I remember that sense of knowing everything will be fine if the defense struggled in the 1st half under Shurmur.

Under Joe Barry I have no such feeling things will be fine. I know Barry won't make an adjustment. If he did for a half of a game and it worked, it seems he always reverts back to 10 yards off on 3rd and 7. I also don't have any feeling LaFleur will say much to Barry.

My hope for this Packers offseason is Aaron Rodgers and the Packers part ways. I hope it's a respectful parting where both parties are happy for the time together but it is time.

Above is the link of every throw Love made against the Eagles this past season. A few times he runs away from a sack Rodgers no longer can run away from. There were even throws to the middle of the field, and some others that SHOULD have been caught. Bottom line, my feeling is this kid in THIS offense can be good. It's a feeling, MY feeling. Right or wrong it's just time to find out.

Not only yours. Give Jordan one year and in 2024 he will be top 10, maybe even top 5 QB in this league. His ball has velocity, zip and precision. That game vs Eagles he (and team) played to win, not just to do the work. I like his attitude. He also wasn't pissed off when Jones did not caught that backsholder pass. It was perfectly thrown ball, but, somehow surprises Jones.

If Jordan Love become starter this autumn, do not be surprise how Watson, Doubs, Toure, Deguara and some more young players fluorish in front of our eyes.

the first thing is always to have a QB with the right mindset. A leader, who wants to work and improve, no matter how good he is. Who cares for his team and gos to OTAs to get a connection with everyone else.
So we have a weakminded QB who has noting from what it takes. A Diva who likes hiself all over the media, just to feel a little bit better.
With AR here noting else matters, with his trust issues, his 1000 conspiracies and his fear of everything. No wonder he always lsot, when it counts for something. Just not the mindset of an winner and a unselfish leader.
Mahomes was better than AR after his second year and he will stay classy for a long time, as the guy, who feels sorry for himself everytime he steps on a football field.

The Packers can be really good right away if not AR hold them back with his greed and his BS

So much of how this team plays feeds off Rodgers. When things don't go well, he pouts, points fingers, and team follows his lead. He's a great QB, but not a guy on the sidelines who's going to instill confidence. A lot of games, you can tell they're done in the first quarter based on QB1's body language. For all of his talk about leadership, it sure would be nice to see some demonstrated when things aren't going well.

As to MLF, Barry and the D, it's like it's an institutional, systemic handicap with the team. The Packers defense usually plays soft, on their heels, reacting to the offensive player. Capers, Pettine, Barry all singing from the same hymnal. Teams with meat eaters on D play on their toes and prosecute the action, forcing the offensive player to react to them.

1. Offense is about more than the quarterback -
Be very careful saying such things on this website.
The Chiefs have a star Weapon in Kelce. They have very solid WR's who played a great role. They had a RB that made the defense stay honest. The OL was good, and Mahommes is great. Scheme wise they made adjustments at halftime and were unstoppable. I think the difference in the super bowl was the staff made the correct changes at halftime.

2. Defenses have to help, they don't have to dominate
When the Super Bowl score is 38-35, there wasn't a lot of defense being played. That being said the Chiefs defense stepped up the 2nd half. They only allowed 11 points compared to the 24 they gave up the first half.

3. Personality matters
It does matter. I think back to some of the Packers best teams they had the veteran players that were great role models and leaders. Guys like Reggie White, Charles Woodson. We need that veteran presence in the locker room that everyone looks up to and follows.

I agree to all your points esply the scheme thing. Most of the TD's scored in the second have been wide open receivers that we haven't seen in a while from packers in Red zone except for that 2020 season. Also their Special teams stepped up when mattered and got them to the Red zone kick return. Coming to packers the ST's have messed up more than they have made plays in earlier seasons.

My three for the Packers are:

Trust
Accountability
Transparency

*The main one that sticks out to me is trust. The defensive players don't seem to trust Coach Barry's D schemes, #12 appears not to trust in Coach LaF's offensive play calls. I don't trust the team (primarily O) can get the points on the board when it's needed in the high stakes of the playoffs. I don't know if it's players, coaches or both? The transparency with a plan moving forward is lacking (understandable to a degree with a future HOF and how he fits into the Packer plans short and long term, keep cards close to the vest due to potential trade). Accountability...not sure since it maybe happening behind closed doors. But, it seems like Coach LaF has their backs for too long before deciding what to do.

Sometimes it is best to just be a fan, other times it is frustrating with the not knowing how things are or aren't being addressed. There has to be a plan, but there aren't enough bread crumbs going in the same direction to make an educated, high percentage guess.

What is the team's identity? They need one at some point with all buying into the message, whatever that may be.

In fairness, all other teams that aren't the Chiefs can compare themselves to them and find areas of improvement. It is refreshing to not have to mention the Packers STs as such a weakness any longer. I hope that lil Italian coach stays with the Packers, for our sake.

Some have mentioned soft as a team, I agree. We seem more of a finesse team and not the strong, blue collar team of the Midwest. Is it culture? Teams coming into GB in Dec/Jan don't fear the Packers or the weather any longer...I sometimes could look at the GB players faces PRIOR to kickoff and gauge if we are ready to play or not. These are just my hunches, nothing scientific obviously... much less accurate.

GPG!

What I learned from that game is that Packers need to go very fresh. Get rid of MLF & Barry & HC ACR. Offer Bieniemy HC position and let him to pick his coordinators and the rest of the staff.

Start new era with Jordan Love and bunch of young guys willing to give all every snap, no matter if they are playing on O, D or ST.

Do not resign old players. My favorite aged players on Packers are Cobb, Crosby & Old Dog. But keeping them you are making your young guys development much longer and still do not have adequate return in games from them.

Cheerleader may stay as OC if new HC (Bieniemy) wants, if not, let him go. I know that many believes MLF is offensive genius, but he did nothing to prove that opinion. I know that he is overpowered by ACR, but that relation just ruined him as HC. I doubt that even young players have respect for him.

Yes, team is the winner, not HC, or QB, or TE or RB or WR. Because of that Packers should try to build the balanced roster with as low number of stars as they can. Every star player might ruin the cohesion of the roster. I notice one thing at SB. Mahomes came to DL after he scored TD and asked them to do their job for him and the offense. His words were: "We can win. It is now your time. Go, get them!" That is the leader of the team!

Well first off the Packers are a soft team. That reputation will need to be changed if they want another SB. Leadership will have something to do with the soft label. The year the Smith brothers came to GB, they wanted to change their team’s attitude, but couldn’t do it. Team leaders will have to step up.
I would like to see MLF’s offense run like it’s suppose to. Love should/will run it and we can see if it is indeed something to build on or headed to the scrapyard.
Last thing is related to the first item…soft teams don’t react well to being punched in the mouth. They don’t usually make 4th qtr. comebacks.
Just MHO…

Philly seemed to have an answer to the Shanahan/LaFleur offense. Same for the Detroit front in the must-win Game last January. Most teams have caught up with it and crash the outside zone schemes, daring the offense to go inside power with a group of Finesse Blockers.

While pondering what they could improve on to be more like Chiefs I almost choked. Andy Reid was a Packer coach. He made the Chiefs AND Philly before that, in the Packers image.

He makes it fun to practice and teaches everyone (coaches and players) how to do their job. I used to love practice as much as playing the games. I WANTED to be around the other players as much as I could. Not being around them felt like sitting in the dark (I know I just threw that one in there).

If we'd traded Rodgers before last season and still went 8-9 (actually think we'd have done better) what would we have said here? Would we have said we traded an MVP and now the Chiefs won the Super Bowl? Are we stupid?

The Packers need to move on from Rodgers. If he really wanted the young guys respect, he should be there for OTA'S and every thing off season related. Mahomes has already said he can't wait for OTA'S. A leader can only lead by being fully invested. Rodgers thinks he's beyond that. He has won 1 super bowl in his career and thinks he's the almighty. If the front office had even the smallest set of balls Rodgers would be gone. I wasn't a big fan of TT but he moved on from Farve with no problem. Gute grow a pair.

I have said this before on this site, #12 did his very best to channel his inner Jay Cutler when things weren’t going GB’s way for much of the last season. That is no way to instill confidence in your team. His body language on the field and his presence on the sidelines were not that of a good leader.

What we don't see is how on several of those teams, their leading rusher in the SB was the 2nd, 3rd, or maybe 4th back on those teams and that there were other backs getting paid more who were on IR or demoted. I agree with your point in that more often than not, the OL makes the back, and the OLs on SB teams tend to be at or near the top of the league.

They gave Edwards-Hillaire some cash as a One pick @ #32, carrying a 2.95 CAP, but that's about it for the Chiefs.
They are a team that apparently follows a different formula for the running game and CAP hits. Almost a Veer attack with Mahomes on his keepers. I would move A.Jones in a trade.

I agree with point #1 completely.

Point #2 is correct but sometimes the defense needs to set the tone for the game and they need to play aggressively and take no prisoners. I would prefer for the defense not to allow 24 points in the first half regardless of how the game turns out.

Point #3 - I agree that personality matters but let's remember that the Chiefs have been here before. This was their 3rd SB appearance in 4 years. Their coaching is excellent and they do not get thrown off their game when they fall behind. Their experience gives them composure and poise to fight through adversity. They play for 60 minutes. they know they are champions and they play like it. I don't know if personality is the correct word. For me it's attitude and confidence. The Packers do not show much of either. That starts with coaching. The Packers don't have much coaching either. Thanks, Since '61

The Philly coach was in year two. He didn't falter. He Knows his Profession and this week, two of his coordinators are now head coaches. The flow chart should be inculcated in the coaching staff. The counter play/scheme should already be part of the Game Plan. One fumble/strip on Hurts was the difference in the final outcome.

Yes and also both Defense and ST's compliment their offense well. Defense made that fumble TD and the ST almost scored a TD with that kick return. The Same thing happened against Houston texans couple of years ago they were down by 24 nothing in one qtr. Both the defense and ST's stepped up and made plays along with Offense that day and got them through by the half time.

Unfortunately for packers we never had all the Phases complimenting each other at once.

Like Walsh and Holmgren, Andy Reid sets the Objective, day one and like all success stories, he is flexible with His scheme and Alert to the Changing nature of the Game. Mahomes enjoys the OTAs because he knows there will be a couple chapters of New play designs for the 2023 season. Forward Thinking.

McCarthy was not the same coach after the collapse in the 2014 NFCCG followed by the sudden and unexpected loss of his younger brother only 10 days later. That. is a difficult professional and personal double whammy to come back from. It probably reoriented his priorities and eventually he was just going through the motions in Green Bay especially during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Fortunately he stepped away after 2018 and he appears to be finally getting back to himself in Dallas during the past season. I will always wish him the best. Thanks, Since '61

When you take a step back and look at things at a whole you will find a loud group of Packer fans that want Rodgers gone for various reasons. You have a fairly quiet group that want Rodgers back, but don't say much because when they do, they are targeted by the other group.

But then you look at other fan bases, and how many of them are hoping for Rodgers to come to them. The Jets, the Raiders this year. The Broncos last year. I have seen Dolphin fans, Patriot Fans, Titans fans wanting him to come there.

Why is there a group that wants to get rid of him, and why are there groups that would do anything to get him? Well the group that wants to get rid of him, the one thing that seems to be consistent the most is that they want him gone based on his personality and off field stuff. The other teams fans that want him to come to them, have been dying at a chance to get a top tier QB for a long time and want one to take over.

It is kind of fascinating to watch how the 2 groups are. The group that want him gone vs other fan bases that want him.

I do not hate ACR. I hate his attitude and behavior from 2017/2018. He plays for himself, willing to work with only chosen (by him) ones and he is not scanning the field any more. Just wait the one who he chose to go with the throw (before snap) become open. When that fail he throw ball away or take the sack. That is not winning combination. He might do that because he become slower with the reaction and his field of vision narrows with age. And if that is true, he will be prone to concentrate more to chosen one.

I think not trading Rodgers last year greatly hurt the Packers future. While I think he is a self absorbed, arrogant man...kind of a goofy guy...and not very good developing relationships...he is a great QB. But not worthy of hate.

But it is time to move on. And I think it would likely be a win win.

I think we'll have to just hope that the leadership trips into the right path as it appears there is some serious learning impairments they have to overcome. I think the popular take is that MLF is too loyal to his coaches. That's a generous take since it is a spin on a positive quality, but I think it's more that he just doesn't get it. Drayton and now Barry were/are so far out of their depths that they couldn't get another NFL job yet MLF just doesn't see their failings that are obvious to even a casual bystander. On one hand he's too loyal that he compromises his organization on the other hand he's too dim to lead his organization.

He's safe. He's been extended and paid. There is really zero pressure on him to perform.

Both the SB teams played extremely well. It must be remembered that without a dropped ball when switching arms by Hurts, Philly may very well have won that game by multiple scores. Taking nothing away from Reid, he is so good at in game adjustments once he sees how the defense is defending them...a big weakness MLF needs to overcome.

If Barry will let his players be aggressive, they have the talent to play solid defense. Hopefully the young DL will make the most of their opportunities.

Great news that Jones renegotiated and is in GB next year. That gives me more confidence, that should Rodgers decide to continue playing, they will deal him and hand the keys over to Love.

Great move to keep jones. Keeps watson and jones as 2 major weapons for the offense. And also allows Pack to use more of there top draft picks on big men. DL and OL have to be addressed early in draft.

If this years playoffs showed anything, teams showed just how important quality Tight Ends can be. Kittle, Goedert, Kelce the Packers need one, a great one.

The Packers are a cover band playing their own music.
The Chiefs are creators of new music.
The Packers keep buying the same sound equipment.
The Chiefs reconfigure the sound equipment room.

an interesting analogy.

there used to be a lot of talk about self-scouting at this organization. i remember well when they decided to cross the rubicon. it's time again for that same strength of character.

if rodgers wants to come back, he can come back as a back-up. if he wants to start, his agent better get busy finding a trade partner.

If there's anything we've seen from LaFleur and Rodgers, the moment the Packers go down 7 pts then it's hero ball time and time to chuck it deep on 3rd & 1, which makes no sense at all. I've never figured that out about LaFleur and he must not panic whenever the Packers are down.

the job is too big for LaFleur. he's a jumped up Offensive Coordinator, and one who really wasn't trusted to call plays at that.

he is out of his league sadly.
